They’ve had ads in Tasmania too for the service on 88 and MPEG4. Not sure if it’s going to be ceasing completely or whether they will just have 88 redirect to 8 which is already the HD service because there’s no point having SD only in MPEG4.
I just notice that WIN channel 8 is now in HD
Has anyone (or you) got any proof of this? If so, can they (or you) please post an image of their (or your) TV on Channel 8, and showing the technical side of it, in this thread. Thanks.
Still SD in the Illawarra…
Also SD in Queensland
I was just about to say that it was SD at 7:30.
Thanks everyone. @southernguy, just quickly asking, where are you getting your WIN TV signal on Channel 8 in HD?
Otherwise, there’s a good chance your TV is on Channel 80, and the transition to HD on Channel 8 is either not complete, or it’s not happening, and that they may only be upgrading Channel 8 to MPEG4 in SD. Most have said that where they are, the WIN signal on Channel 8 is still in SD, including their hometown in Wollongong.
Well is that enough proof for everyone who was implying that I was talking crap!

I never thought you were! Ballarat could just be the first station to switch over, then the rest of the markets afterwards.
I just rescanned and it’s still SD.

Yep. If it says HD in the name, then it’s in HD. Thanks for that photo.
That’s just going to leave SCA (10 affiliate) as the only network in the ACT and Regional VIC/NSW/QLD to mostly still be in MPEG2 SD, with the main exception being on Channel 50, where they are in MPEG4 HD.
Yep. and i wouldn’t expect SCA to change that anytime soon.
Not sure when it changed as I don’t check it often but it looks like Channel 88 has disappeared in Tasmania where they’ve been running the ads recently saying that one would be changing like the others.
So now we have:
8 - 9HD Launceston
80 - 9HD Launceston
81 - 9Gem
82 - 9Go!
83 - 9Life (SD)
84 - New Channel Coming Soon (SD)
85 - Gold (SD)
Mt Dundas transmitter.
I’m honestly in disbelief at how fast regional Australia has been moving this year to quickly getting rid of the MPEG2 channels. Please happen to metro markets soon!
Same - I would’ve thought that the metro networks would’ve already been ahead of the regionals with this - seems like they will get all the channels in MPEG4 HD before us city folks do (at least in some markets).

I don’t think metro markets will care too much about MPEG4 technology. This is more of a regional trend here.
You would’ve thought that it was the regional stations that couldn’t afford to upgrade their broadcast tech, but I guess after all of this it’s now actually the metros that seem to be the big losers. They’re just too lazy. I took a closer look at the quality of 9HD Melbourne on my TV and the HD quality is horrendous.
There are some areas of regional townships that get the city transmissions on their transmitters, including Geelong and the Surf Coast. On the Highton tower is essentially a Melbourne repeater, with MPEG2 HD channels. Same for Anglesea/Aireys Inlet, it’s just a shame they don’t receive the regional (Ballarat) channels on their transmitter, which means they have to put up with the crappy picture quality from the Melbourne channels.
If Geelong and Anglesea/Aireys Inlet got the Ballarat channels added to their respective transmission towers, that would allow residents to get a better picture quality from the regional channels than the current Melbourne offering, even if it means having to watch regionalised ads for Ballarat, Colac and Warrnambool. I can’t see the metros upgrading to MPEG-4 anytime soon, sorry to disappoint some folks here.
So another reason why the Ballarat channels should be added to the Geelong TV tower:
- Noticeably better HD picture quality than Melbourne (MPEG-4 FHD 1080i)
Metro TV Quality: Crap
Regional TV Quality: Best
Have any other east coast WIN 9 markets been upgraded since Victoria on Friday?
