Given how horrible their relationship was during the last few years of their affiliation agreement, I can only imagine the SMH/Age’s line that WIN are in the driver’s seat to regain Nine affiliation is merely a ploy to get SCA to sign up, and sign up soon.
In some ways, I could imagine Bruce Gordon really wanting the Nine affiliation back on WIN after the 2016 swap decimated the ratings and probably overall value of his network.
Not sure whether we’ll actually see a reversal of the 2016 swap, but with the launch of Sky News on WIN not long after CBS bought out Ten (which Bruce Gordon was against happening IIRC) I’m actually willing to predict there’s a slim chance WIN may even decide to make its next major content/affiliation deal with Foxtel rather than either Nine or Ten.
It’s business. If SCA aren’t meeting the yearly $ goal as the article mentions… do people really think that NEC won’t give WIN a second look in?
The two companies are still doing business together anyway, just like SCA and Ten continue to do
It would be irresponsible and in breach of company law of SC directors to sign a contract with NEC knowing the company couldn’t pay.
Fancy a regional TV station doing an affiliation deal with a Pay TV company? What will happen to the station with an affiliation to Ten? Will the regional areas lose Ten or what?
One thing that seems fair and would help ensure regional station groups survival is reverse compensation paid by the networks to the affiliates - for revenue they make steaming content into their broadcast areas via 9Now, 7+ and 10Play
On a separate note to the above, it must be just about time for another WIN TV hissy fit. Bruce Gordon claiming he can independently program the network, he is yet to prove it - I would hardly call Gold programmed.
WIN TV, if his claims were to be believed, would have done so. WIN keeps pushing Crawford’s Classics, but can’t be bothered showing them on TV. He could program a channel featuring those shows at night and other sources shows mixed in with infomercials to help pay for the channel.
In 2007, there was heaps of good content they could have drawn on, not so much in 2020 in large part because of the multi-channels.
very true
make it win 9 with the dots like Prime 7 get both worlds like sc10 did
and use 9 alone for advertising programs like 7 does on Prime 7
Win did do some breakaway programming for a while there, maybe last year or in 2018 during their 10 affiliation - must’ve gone well for them…
Though that would hurt their DVD sales.
I guess when a time comes that they stop making enough money from it, then they’ll put them to air.
Like what NBN9 sometimes do?
yeah depends if things changes it may not even happen might get a new renewal and affiliates stay as is
Not necessarily. They could do a classic collection of episodes such as those released on DVD for shows like Kingswood Country and Hey Dad!
By not screening the full series it won’t necessarily affect it.
If WIN is going to go that route, why didn’t WIN do so in 2008 when 9 reinstated the dots after a 2 year suspension of the dots?
He can and has. Everyone forgets about Sky News on WIN and just focuses on stupid Crawfords. SNOW is the result of Bruce doing a deal with a broadcaster to create a custom channel for his own network, independent of his affiliation agreement. No different to Seven and Nine using Discovery/Scripps to program their network.
I think @bacco007 is right in that the SMH article was just ruffling feathers and nothing more.
Look forward to WIN turning into Sky News 24/7 with The Weather Channel as its only digital channel.
Funny. But, WIN’s cozy relationship with ANC would open doors to a possible deal with Foxtel, should they need it.
I guess they could onsell some fox8 style content or best bits of Foxtel library to WIN but they’d be losing exclusivity.
