Nine (WIN)

I see it’s come up a few times before… WIN HD blockyness.

Wow it’s awful. I haven’t watched much WIN HD this year. Today I’m settled in for the Bathurst 1000 with a native HD projector and 150" screen. With any sort of motion or significant change on the screen, it’s worse to watch than the SD channels.

I switched back to a 50" TV and it’s almost as hard to watch.

I’m struggling to see the value in them running HD at all. Because of all of the compression artifacts, it’s a worse experience than SD (especially for sport).

I just set up foxtel Play on my laptop (SD streaming) and it’s far more watchable on the huge screen compared to WIN HD.

I haven’t seen any of the transmission/reception problems on WIN HD you mention. The picture from Bathurst looks excellent. The only artefacts I’ve noticed are from some in-car images. WIN HD in Queensland is running variable bit rate HD of approx 6 MB/sec which should give a good picture with MPEG4. By comparison 9HD through SC is running a fixed bit rate of 5.14.

WIN channels in general are terrible in Wollongong. I never noticed that much when they were with Nine except when I use to record programs from 9Life. Half the time the recordings would be unwatchable with green and blue lines/blocks stretching up and down the screen every few seconds, but luckily 9Life repeats everything a few times after the first airing.

Now I watch WIN more often with TEN programs it drives me insane. My only solution while watching WIN is to switch to another channel for a few seconds and then switch back (sometimes 2 or 3 times) & eventually it stays clear. I have friends who have the same problem with WIN and also use this solution.

It might be a Griffith thing. Anything with a little bit of motion or changing elements on the screen look like WIN HD minecraft edition.

SD broadcast of Bathurst was easier to watch!

Mythtv showed a buffer data rate of about 5.5mbps, so it should be decent mp4, but it’s just awful.

SD or HD? I’m in the Central West and watch WIN HD from time to time and haven’t had any issues I can think of.

It’s both, but I might see if I can change my areal

That’s sounds more like an issue with your receiving equipment than WIN’s transmission.

I thought that too at one stage… except I discovered friends with a completely different set up to me who also have issues with WIN & only WIN… bit coincidental. If it is the equipment, it seems odd to me that 2 people from opposite sides of the Illawarra both have issues. I also lived in Sydney at one stage with the same equipment and had no issues receiving all the channels there.

Different error correction settings used by WIN maybe?

Looking at the Regional TAM ratings, the joint venture Nine channels beat the primary WIN channel and combined WIN primary/multichannels in September in Tasmania and Western Australia. And Nine SCA beat WIN in SNSW, Victoria and Queensland. SNSW is WIN’s strongest market, not surprisingly.

In the latest Regional TAM ratings released this morning for the week of 2-8 October, WIN is the #2 network in Tasmania, whilst its main channel is 3rd ahead of TDT9.

WIN mistakenly use normal circle logo instead of the ‘heart’ version in this promo, which ultimately leads to part of Ten’s ‘heart’ logo being evidently seen behind it. Georgia’s reaction here is certainly apt. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This would probably be the closest thing I’ve seen to a line-up on WIN since the affiliation change.

Looks pretty good, well by WIN standards anyway.:stuck_out_tongue:

Because it’s produced by Ten.

I’m kinda surprised WIN still haven’t aired any form of proper lineups of their own for Ten. If it’s too hard for them, then they should get Ten to produce them.

No US networks air lineups.

I’m not convinced typing the show names on screen and a VO running through them is an effective way to get people
To watch. Sure it tells you what’s on (like a TV guide) but it hardly sells. The US networks Prefer to run a :10 promo with actual sell, rather than lineups.

I stand corrected. I’ve lived here 10 years and never seen a lineup on US TV @pelican

That said, that is essentially a night open - it plays once right at 8pm as the affils hand over to the network.

As am I

All coverup jokes aside, I have said before on here that WIN seemed to have the ‘best’ use of lineups (out of the affiliates) prior to the affiliation swap. You have 9NBN using a soundtrack for their lineups that is meant for a 9/GO lineup and you have Imparja who covered up the “Tonight” on the new lineups and replaced it with “Tomorrow”.

Can’t comment on Southern Cross but from what I have read on here, they’re just using whatever lineups the dirty feed serves up
