Nine (WIN)

“Morning programs” & “Late programs” is not a very helpful description

Our paper does that, I hate it.

Most printed TV listings do it these days.

Here’s an article from The Canberra Times about the 1st week of ratings after the affiliation swap: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/look-whos-winning-canberras-6pm-tv-news-battle-as-ten-switch-hits-win-ratings-20160710-gq2mel.html

Given the difference in affiliation fees, WIN probably have an okay result there - they are doing better with Ten’s content than SC were - which is the main thing for them.

Once those same people discover Nine’s content is now on 5, WINs ratings will dip a bit more I think.

I knew they weren’t anything great under a Nine affiliation in recent times (especially since the move to 7pm when it had to compete with a locally produced ABC News), but those ratings for WIN News Canberra at 6pm under a Ten affiliation are shocking!

Of course too early to come to conclusions after only a week or so of ratings, but if WIN News continues to be 3rd at 6pm in markets like Canberra then unfortunately I would probably have grave fears for it’s long term future…

If, in the worse case scenario, that WIN axes its full local bulletin before SC Nine launches its own proper regional news service, then ABC News will be the only proper local TV news bulletin in Canberra! :open_mouth:

It baffles me why WIN didn’t move to 6pm the moment they decided that was their slot with the Ten affiliation, delay Nine News and get viewers ready for the new timeslot.

WIN certainly have a big problem in that their point of difference hinges on local news, yet they are affiliated with a network which is the complete opposite of that.

People won’t consider WIN their source of news when there’s no national news in prime time. If that means Ten Sydney or even WIN Hobart producing a 6:30 national bulletin entirely so WIN can take it - that’d be fine.

They have until SC start their local news service to grab a market - if they can’t get a compelling offering by then, then they’re never getting those viewers back, and may as well swing the axe.

But what is so compelling about Nines content over tens??
Slot by slot ten would have better programming than nine 7:30-9:30.

Of course, a lot comes down to personal preferences.

But the national trend is that Nine Network programming in general rates higher than Ten’s.

I think Nine having a stronger news department along with the NRL and Summer Of Cricket would help their ratings (and therefore, those of Nine’s regional affiliates) quite a lot, particularly on the East Coast.

Contrary to the guides, Mass For You at Home was on WIN this morning at 6:00am.

It’ll probably be opposite.

Ch 5 has ways been seen as ‘poison’ & WIN now has the top rating shows (MasterChef, The Bachelor, Bachelorette, Big Bash, Offspring, Brock, etc)

  • WIN local news at 6pm.

There’s not even “Southern Cross”.

All regional Australians be like: “WHAT IS CHANNEL 9!?”

Brock is top rating, having not aired yet?

Nine News, Today, the cricket, NRL have had Nine all over them in WIN areas despite WIN’s cover-ups. I’m sure most people know Channel 9.

That’s a top rating show? It hasn’t even aired yet!

You’re kidding me, right? I very strongly doubt that the average viewer (rather than observant media enthusiasts like us) in regional Australia even cares about the branding of TV stations and networks and realistically, I’m sure that most regional Australians are more than aware of what Channel Nine and the Nine Network is despite WIN’s best attempts to completely remove the brand from regional screens over many years. I’m sure regional viewers would be very familiar with brands such as Nine News and Nine’s Wide World Of Sports, for instance.

If anything, Ten’s branding position in regional Australia is going to be weakened thanks to their new main regional affiliate which branding wise, prefers to position themselves as completely independent from major metro networks as much as possible. Even if it was very strong in the past WIN are going to have to fight very hard for their brand to remain relevant in regional Australia in 2016 (going on 2017!) against strong national and international television and streaming brands such as Nine, Seven, Foxtel, Netflix, Stan and Presto.

Actually if anyone has the top rating shows it is Prime being aligned to 7. Nine and Ten affiliates in regional markets (with possible exception of NBN) are usually well behind in 2nd and 3rd/4th place.
