Incredible effort by Todd Woodbridge and Sam Groth. Coverage started with the pre-game at around 10.30 PM AEST and must have finished close to 7.30 AM.

Todd Woodbridge was the host of the “Pre-match Show” of the Women’s Final tonight, with Jelena Dokic and Sam Groth joining him on the panel. Both Dokic and Groth are commentating the Final. I think all three have done a good job hosting/commentating so far in the French Open this year.

Good coverage for the past 2 weeks. Bring on Wimbledon.

I was surprised they didn’t end up using the world feed for that 2nd semi.

But yes, the coverage has been great. Ratings haven’t been too crash hot but hopefully Stan’s numbers have been okay

I do like the mini matches on Stan with the ability to watch during the day

With Wimbledon returning to 9 for the first time in 11 years, I hope they use this great intro theme again they used I think from the 90s until 2010…

If anyone knows the track name and artist, please let me know (the track that starts at 1mins1secs until 3mins11secs)

Also I am wondering if 9 may feature Jim Courier in commentary for Wimbledon this year or is he with a different broadcaster for the tournament?

Lastly, has John Alexander ever said if he plans to return to tennis commentary in future, if/when he is no longer in politics? I really miss his commentary at the Aus Open night matches

Thanks

It’s a shame they can’t head over there. When 9 last had the rights they had a full blown Wimbledon studio/set and for a time there they even had their own graphics packages for their matches. Was excellent coverage for back then. Fred Stolle and Tony Trabert called many of the matches with Ken Sutcliffe hosting.

Wimbledon back on its spiritual home of 9 after 11 years. Didn’t remember a farewell montage back in 2010.

Any caps?

Don’t think JA’s done tennis for 11 years

Their coverage was horrendous, especially in the last 5-10 years. They were mailing it in towards the end with constantly delayed matches, being half an hour late because the footy show etc. wouldn’t finish and giving meaningless ODI’s preference. Stolle and Sutcliffe are awful too. Channel 7 gave it the refresher it needed.

Given their RG coverage it should be good though. I do miss that opener though, always knew Wimbledon was on when that music played

I remember Ken saying at the time they weren’t sure they coming back/hoping to come back. Channel 7 didn’t announce they had the rights to a couple of months before 2011

Great summation, agree with all of that

They didn’t have a studio. Mainly took the world feed. Hardly had a central hosting. It was a pre record of Todd Woodbridge in the grounds. It was tacky and awful.

They had a studio didn’t they, Geoff Masters often was next to Woodbridge (and in their last year Jac Felgate).

They also sent a presenter/reporter and producer to London each year.

It was so bad that even ABC’s mediawatch had issues with it.

That was a commentary box. It was shit.
