So this one was actually part of the media complex which is stacked portables at the northern end. This setup is still around today, but not many broadcasters are on location like back in these days.
Possibly a strategy change - that site has gone off a cliff both in terms of quality/quantity and users and a lot of their recent content barely has engagement. However, it would be odd to do it given they were regularly posting content and pictures during lead up events.
Can’t stand her.
I like the new graphics but I don’t think there should be a big gap showing the first set, especially because when it goes to 4-5 sets, it’s very extended. Covering the ‘M’ of Melbourne
If they got rid of that space it wouldn’t be as long. It just feels like unnecessary space
Agree. The new set location is a definite improvement over the original location considering it’s closer to the action being in front of RLA. What ruins it though is (I think) the merchandise shop taking up half of the background when a wide shot is used.
Great to hear John Alexander back calling a match this afternoon, for the world feed, the Maron Cilic one (albeit wasn’t the main caller - he was providing analysis between points).
Also, just on that, while yes all of 9Now’s live streams do have ads (the world feed ones often abruptly commence), there were times when on the non-broadcast ones an ad wouldn’t appear and you’d get extra commentary, stats graphics and vision of the players resting/talking with their boxes - like what you’d get on Stan Sport).
The stacked portables are gone now (the area is now used for hospitality)
All the media comes out of the centrepiece building now which partly explains why 9 have moved to that side of Rod Laver this year.
Yeah there’s a door/area on that building (which I think is horribly positioned but anyway) that says “media centre”, a lot of it is restaurants/bars/shops/VIP/etc too. And it’s shadowed by Tennis Australia’s HQ tower behind, which itsself towers over the rail yards and whole sporting precinct.
However, like MBB indicated, they did still keep this old broadcast compound above Garden Square up for a few years after Nine took over.
I think in the last year or two there was a kids activation set up near there.
Anyone else getting a piercing background sound as part of the tennis coverage on main channel?
Geoff Masters calling the Chris O’Connell showdown on 9Go! / main channel.
John Fitzgerald calling the 5 set 3 hour marathon with 5th seed Rublev, who was looking like losing in a major upset. 9Now.
Nine’s Peter Psaltis and in special comments Lleyton Hewitt calling the 9Gem Jason Kubler match just started.

Why do the 9Now world feeds (chromecast) look so so much better quality than Nine’s broadcast channels!? Couldn’t believe the stark difference.
Also did anyone else notice audio out of sync on the main channel broadcast earlier today, both when the ball was being hit and when TJ toured the new set location?
Think that was Shura Taft (former Nine children’s presenter) doing the post match interview on court, seen on 9Now, following Rublev’s comback almost 4 hour 5th set tie break epic. Great interviewer too. I’m sure Nine will replay or show highlights of this soon, many probably missed it, did they put it on 9 or Gem in the later stages?
Yes and no.
What’s going on with Nine’s control room directors at Melb Park today, the best matches you’ve had to jump on 9Now (or Stan Sport), pathetic! And prime time main channel is going to be a Djokovic (ok fair) but one-sided belting no doubt…
Two 5 set near 4 hour amazing battles, one involving a top player and the other (playing now) with an Aussie (up a break in the 5th) ![]()
Also the host of Seven’s failed revival of The Mole in 2013. Despite the fact that it flopped in the ratings, I still enjoyed that season, partially because the previous time it was on television (2005), I didn’t really pay particular attention to it.
Jim and John were commentating together prior to COVID and are both commentating together tonight.
Nine’s Peter Psaltis and in special comments Lleyton Hewitt calling the 9Gem Jason Kubler match just started.
Brenton Speed on play by play with Lleyton on special comments.
Oh yeah you’re right whoops, they sound the same LOL
they sound the same LOL
Sometimes when watching the NRL, I get confused between Peter Psaltis and Mat Thompson (the more primary NRL commentator).
Off-topic I know, but Thompson has also taken over from Ray Warren as the chief swimming commentator for Nine as well.
Now, imagine Thompson calling the tennis…
Some fantastic matches today, Aussies involved (one won an classic and another looking like going 2 sets up in a moment), across multiple channels/platforms too, Nine should be happy. Also dominating trends on social media and online sites. And bar ABC shows minimal competition tonight too (and Nine and ABC’s shows’ demographics should be polar opposite as well). 60,000 crowd for the first ever Sunday plus even more tonight. And optimal weather. They already deemed it a success according to the news tonight.
