Nine Tennis Coverage

I think Tennis Australia probably has looked into every possible scenario for next year, meaning the ABC story is at least probably partially true. Of course Tiley would deny it, even if they have discussed the possibility.

Let’s get through this year’s French Open, Wimbledon, Tokyo Olympics and US Open first and see how all of that goes down, before the Aus Open 2022. It’s still a long time away and knowing the past 18 months, anything can happen as the click of your fingers. At least this year’s AO was done and successfully and was a big test in terms of coronavirus, the other 2021 events aforementioned must still be sweating.

They are getting paid hundreds of thousands, even millions to come to the Australia Open. It’s just bloody 2 weeks quarantine. I would love to do that for the price.

And they’re not having to do that anywhere else in the world, so from a player’s perspective it seems OTT.

This isn’t saying Australia’s approach is right or wrong but ultimately the protection of Australian citizens could come at a cost of major events.

The draw for this year’s Davis Cup was announced overnight. Group matches will be played simultaneously at the end of November in Turin (Italy), Innsbruck (Austria) and Madrid (Spain). Australia will play all their group matches in Turin, against Croatia and Hungary.
The final will be held in Madrid on December 5.

Nine has the rights to all Davis Cup matches involving Australia, while BeIN Sports will show other matches including the final.

Good to see 9 proving extensive coverage of Roland Garros this year. SBS started their coverage at 8:30pm

SBS started from 10-10.30, Fox had exclusive rights to the first 3 hours

Impressive schedule from Nine including a pre-show every day. I do wonder how ratings will go for them.

Also will be interesting to see how their coverage will be, how much of the world feed they will use…

So just prime time games on Nine, and other games on Stan Sport?

On the first Saturday of the tournament (June 5), early evening coverage will be on 9GO! due to Super Rugby Trans-Tasman on 9Gem.

That’s pretty good French Open coverage. Much better than when Nine last had the rights.

Good decision to have main channel coverage after primetime rather than keep it all on 9GEM.

I am surprised they aren’t keeping some exclusivity on Stan as a way to get subscribers.
Yes, they have all the courts but by the looks of the schedule Nine will be showing coverage all the way through the day (even allotted time in the morning on GEM for the new night sessions). Only the real tennis sickos are going to want access to all courts

Stan Sport will have multiple court coverage in the first 8 days of the tournament.

I am sure they will plug it quite a bit on their coverage!

Wouldn’t be surprised if sometimes the ‘biggest’ match at any given time isn’t the one necessarily shown on Nine’s coverage in order to provide a ‘hook’ for viewers to get Stan Sport. While that will naturally happen sometimes when an Aussie player is in action (which you would think Nine will show), think there might be some strategic choices at other times.

The Tennis Channel sometimes does a similar thing during their French Open coverage to promote their OTT ‘Tennis Channel Plus’ service considering that grand slam is the only one they have ‘broad’ rights for (ESPN has exclusive live coverage of the Australian Open, Wimbledon & the US Open)

Plus, every match of the tournament will stream ad-free, live and on demand on Stan Sport, bringing subscribers all the action from every court.

The hallowed outdoor clay courts of Roland Garros will host the sport’s finest, with the long-awaited return of Roger Federer , hoping to deny defending champion Rafael Nadal from securing his 14th French Grand Slam title.

Poland’s Iga Świątek , 19, is looking strong in the hunt for back-to-back women’s titles after claiming the Italian Open on clay earlier this month.

Australia will be eagerly watching as our world No. 1, Ash Barty , returns to Roland Garros for the first time since winning in 2019. Following a strong performance at the Australian Open and a great season on clay, Barty is after her second Grand Slam title.

Second-highest ranked female Aussie, Ajla Tomljanović , will be joined by Astra Sharma , a wildcard entry, in her third consecutive year at Roland Garros.

Serena Williams is set to play after a three-month hiatus since the Australian Open. The 23-time Grand Slam and three-time Roland Garros champion will continue her quest for a 24th major title.

The Australian men will be out in force, headed by Alex de Minaur and John Millman , both of whom are ranked in the world’s Top 50.

The youngest Aussie in the draw, 21-year-old Alexei Popyrin (No. 62), is coming off a fine performance at the Australian Open where he upset world No. 13 David Goffin in the first round.

Jordan Thompson and James Duckworth round out our men’s contingent, joined by wildcard entry Chris O’Connell .

Calling the action on Channel 9 and 9Gem will be Roz Kelly , Todd Woodbridge , Sam Groth , Jelena Dokic , Brett Phillips and Clint Stanaway .

It all begins on Sunday at 6.30pm on 9Gem. Programming will switch to Channel 9 at 10.10pm.

Glad that the French Open is only a few nights away. And earlier than what SBS did in previous years.

Does Sunday’s main coverage start at 11.10pm (in what’s still on the EPG), or at 10.10pm going from that article posted?

4.30pm is the preview coverage

Main Channel Coverage is 10.10pm, or 11.10pm? As in Nine. Not Gem.
