In terms of free to air coverage, this is a massive step back from 2019.

How so?

The article states only Wallabies matches and the final.
The previous world cup on Fox/10 had additional non Wallabies matches and both semi finals if I’m not mistaken.

Yeah they should take note. The FTA offering has decreased from the previous version as they are attempting to grow their own subscription service.

Ten showed 10 games during the last Rugby World Cup:

In addition to the Japan-Russia opener, Channel Ten will broadcast all four Wallabies group stage matches live, while they’ll also broadcast two quarter-finals, one semi-final, the third-place play-off, and the final.

Assuming what Nine have outlined tonight (ie; all Wallabies games and the final) are all the games they’ll air on FTA, the maximum number of games that could be aired is eight (4 Wallabies group games then they win their QF but lose a SF which means they’ll be in the 3rd place playoff + the final) and as little as five if the Wallabies (unlikely but still possible) don’t progress out of the group stage.

Every Women’s Rugby World Cup match will only be streamed live on Stan. Unless the Wallaroos make the final, it is unlikely it will be shown on Nine.

All Women’s Rugby World Cup matches will be held on a Saturday or Sunday.

Good news that all Wallaroos matches will be shown on Free-to-air. I get the feeling that the NZ v AUstralia game will have to be shown on 9GEM due to News taking Priority. If Australia make it to the Quarter Finals/Semi-Finals, I think they might have a chance of screening via FTA.

RUGBY’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS TOURNAMENTS HAVE A NEW HOME

STAN SPORT SECURES EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO THE RUGBY WORLD CUP WITH WALLABIES MATCHES ON THE NINE NETWORK

The most prestigious tournaments in World Rugby have a new home, with Stan Sport securing exclusive rights to the women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand later this year and the 2023 men’s Rugby World Cup in France.

24 AUGUST 2022: Stan Sport, Australia’s Home of Rugby, today announced that it has secured the rights to the women’s Rugby World Cup this year in New Zealand and the men’s Rugby World Cup 2023 in France. With unprecedented access to the pinnacle events in world rugby, every match will stream ad-free, live and on demand, with every match of the 2023 tournament in 4K UHD on Stan Sport.

The agreement will see Stan Sport exclusively broadcast all 26 matches from the women’s Rugby World Cup beginning Saturday 8 October 2022 and spans across 35 days in New Zealand. The Wallaroos’ World Cup campaign kicks off against New Zealand’s Black Ferns on the opening day of the tournament in front of what could be a record crowd for a women’s test match at Eden Park. This is followed by Pool A matches against Scotland (15 October) and Wales (22 October). With only 45 days to go until the world’s best women’s teams go head-to-head in New Zealand, Stan will bring fans closer to the action like never before with additional exclusive content like never before.

Hosted in France, the men’s Rugby World Cup 2023 will be the biggest event on the global sporting calendar next year and the largest global sports event to be held in France since Rugby World Cup 2007. All 48 matches across seven weeks (9 September - 28 October) will be streamed ad-free in 4K UHD on Stan Sport, with full match replays, highlights and mini matches available on demand. Wallabies matches and the Final will also be simulcast live on the Nine Network and streamed on 9Now.

The Wallabies’ quest to win a third Rugby World Cup title begins on Saturday 9 September against Georgia and is followed by Pool C matches with Fiji (17 September) and Wales (24 September). The iconic Webb Ellis Cup will be lifted at Stade de France on Sunday 29 October. Over one million tickets for Rugby World Cup 2023 have already been sold to fans worldwide, confirming the global appeal of rugby’s biggest tournament.

Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan was the most watched rugby event ever, with more than 857 million people tuning in around the world. The combination of Stan, alongside Nine’s broader TV platforms and media assets, means Stan is better placed than any other streaming or broadcast TV business to bring the Rugby World Cup to more Australians than ever before.

The addition of the Rugby World Cup further cements Stan’s position as the Home of Rugby, with more world class rugby available in the one place than ever before, including The Rugby Championship, Spring Tour (Autumn Nations Series), Super Rugby Pacific and Six Nations.

Stan Chief Executive Officer Martin Kugeler said:

“Since Stan Sport’s launch in February 2021, we have invested significantly to build a fresh and comprehensive rugby offering for fans in Australia. From grassroots to world class internationals and now the pinnacle of the game, the Rugby World Cups, Stan Sport continues to deliver more men’s and women’s rugby content than ever before.

Together with our great partners at Rugby Australia, we have grown the audience for rugby significantly and this announcement further highlights our commitment to the game. Stan and Nine are uniquely positioned to broadcast the Rugby World Cup to more Australians than ever before with Nine’s Total TV assets (Stan, the Nine Network and 9Now) alongside all of our other channels, including publishing, digital and radio. There is no better place to showcase one of the biggest events in global sport and we can’t wait for the women’s World Cup action to kick off in New Zealand this October.”

World Rugby Chief Executive Officer Alan Gilpin said:

“We are delighted to be partnering with Stan Sport to provide fans in Australia with unrivalled access to our men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups. Stan Sport is the home of rugby in Australia and we are excited by their plans to showcase the sport to new audiences through their innovative content and leading digital platforms.

“We are entering what will be a golden decade for rugby in Australia, culminating in hosting of the men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups in 2027 and 2029 respectively. The excitement is building and we are looking forward to working with Stan Sport and our friends at Rugby Australia to get all of Australia excited about rugby once again.”

Stan Sport, The Home of Rugby, is the only place to watch all the action from the women’s Rugby World Cup in September 2022 and the men’s Rugby World Cup 2023 with every match streaming ad-free, live and on demand.

Streaming ad-free in 4K UHD on Stan Sport

The Wallabies get their chance to snap a 20-year Bledisloe Cup drought against the might of the All Blacks when the 2022 series begins at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium, Live and Free from 7.30pm this Thursday on Channel 9HD and 9Now.

In a high-pressure two-game series, the Wallabies will look to defy the odds under coach David Rennie, who needs his forwards, steered by captain James Slipper to unsettle the All Blacks up front before the speed and skill of backs, Marika Koroibete and returning flyhalf Bernard Foley, can capitalise.

Signalling another all-out trans-Tasman war at Marvel Stadium, the All Blacks’ famous haka will shake the ground before the giants of world rugby and their big names Beauden Barrett and Sam Cane try to heap more misery on the Wallabies.

Nine’s Wide World of Sports coverage of the Bledisloe Cup will feature Wallabies greats Tim Horan and Drew Mitchell, plus All Blacks legends Andrew Mehrtens and Sonny Bill Williams.

Special guests on the panel will be Wallabies legend Matt To’omua (pre-game) and former All Blacks superstar Ma’a Nonu (half-time).

On the sideline with Roz Kelly will be Mitchell, Williams and former Wallaby Morgan Turinui.

Sean Maloney will call the match, flanked by Horan and Mehrtens, while Nick McArdle hosts the coverage alongside Justin Harrison and Allana Ferguson.

Viewers can also tune in to extended ad-free coverage in ultra-clear 4K UHD on Stan Sport with two additional streams available, Spider Cam and the option to follow All Blacks superstar Richie Mo’unga on Player Cam.

Post-game viewers will have the opportunity to submit their questions for the panel via @wwos and @stansportrugby on Instagram and Facebook.

I don’t think there’s been a midweek bledisloe since the one off test match in 1994 at the SFS. Maybe someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

The 2nd Bledisloe Cup match in Auckland will clash with 9News on the east coast. I think that Gem will be used for the Auckland Test (except Perth, which will presumably be on Nine).

Correct.

Why the mid week date? Seems like a significant downgrade of what has traditionally been the pinnacle of the international season (even if we play like 5th grade in the Illawarra comp)

I’m guessing due to the clash with the NRL (and to a lesser extent AFL) finals on Friday and Saturday.

I don’t mind the midweek slots (especially later in the week). Especially given the state Australian rugby is in, getting these games into clear air away from the NRL is a good idea and allows for a wider audience to watch that would otherwise watch the NRL (especially a final) over the Wallabies.

Recently, I spoke to Channel 9 on the phone and asked whether the next Bledisloe Cup match in Eden Park, Auckland will be shown on the main channel in Perth (even though Next Saturday will be the AFL Grand Final Day). However, the staff told me that there’s no advanced guides. I am hopeful that the Auckland Test will be shown on Nine in the west.

It will at least be on 9GemHD in Perth.

Main channel coverage of the Bledisloe Cup from Auckland will depend on the finish time of the women’s elite race of UCI Road Cycling Championship in Wollongong earlier in the afternoon.
