again, poor scheduling. Clash with the AFL Grand Final

The AFL grand final only confirmed where and when it was going to be played last week.

The NRL and RA always planned to play on the Saturday night, well after the AFL would have been.

Maybe as latecomers they should shift the final to Sunday to avoid the NRL and rugby…

AFLGF is the biggest sporting event in the country. It was always going to be on Saturday 25th.

And it should be played in the day time like it always has rather than encroaching on other sports at night time who had planned theirs long in advance to avoid the AFL.

Issue being it’s in Perth.

Yeah I agree but with it being in Perth it makes it hard. Do we really need a morning or midday GF?

BTW Rugby Championship schedule was only announced last week… NRL fixtures haven’t been confirmed for GF night yet either! AFL has been confirmed.

Even ignoring the AFL, why are they playing at the same time as an NRL Preliminary Final?

Except that it has (COVID pending, of course. Townsville is the backup so I imagine it’d be the same schedule even if a change of venue is required)

The 2021 NRL grand final will be held on Sunday, October 3, kicking off at 6.30pm local time (7.30pm AEDT).

Could easily make it a 1:30 Perth kickoff and it would work?

Pre re-arrangement to the Rugby Championship schedule, the Wallabies were due to play Argentina in Newcastle with a 7:45pm local time kickoff that night so nothing has changed in that regard, really. It’s only the AFL (and Seven) that has decided that the grand final has to be played for a AEST nighttime audience.

I meant the prelim (as in clashing with the GF)

Teams aren’t confirmed but venues are locked in. Either way, the Saturday night preliminary final will feature two Sydney teams: Rabbitohs will play either Roosters or Sea Eagles.

Preliminary final 2 - Friday, September 24: 7.50pm at Suncorp Stadium
Melbourne Storm v Winner of Semi-Final 2

Preliminary final 1 - Saturday, September 25: 7.50pm at Suncorp Stadium
South Sydney Rabbitohs v Winner of Semi-Final 1

In other words, the AFL (and Seven) could have scheduled the GF at 2.30pm Perth time (4.30pm AEST) so it would have avoid both the NRL preliminary final and the Australia-Argentina rugby match.

But would have had a lower audience, plus would have affected the news.

Surely in this Covid environment where sporting codes are hemorrhaging money left, right and center, fixturing up against rival codes is largely irrelevant if doing so maximizes your return on the event.

Sure it’d be nice for us to have stuff spaced out but it’s not a particularly nice time atm.

And have it clash with news? No thanks!

Because no news bulletin has ever been reschuled due to a major sporting event.

Wallabies v Springboks game two

After a win against South Africa, the Wallabies continue their Rugby Championship campaign this Saturday in game two against the Springboks, live on 9Gem, 9Now – and extended, live and ad-free coverage on Stan Sport.

With the Wallabies edging out the world champions 28-26 last Sunday, Quade Cooper became Australia’s golden boy, kicking a match-winning penalty after the final siren in his first Test match in more than four years.

Saturday’s coverage will be presented by the Wide World of Sports and Stan Sport commentary lineup, hosted by Roz Kelly and Nick McCardle, and featuring All Blacks superstars Sonny Bill Williams and Andrew Mehrtens. Wallaby greats Tim Horan, Drew Mitchell, Morgan Turinui and Justin Harrison will break down all the action, assisted by Sera Naiqama.

After losing all three Bledisloe Cup matches against New Zealand, the Wallabies have had a much-needed confidence boost for their encounter at a packed Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. But the South Africans, led by captain Siya Kolisi, will be smarting – they haven’t lost consecutive Test matches since 2018.

After Saturday’s clash there will be little recovery time for the Wallabies, who face Argentina next over two successive weekends: September 25 in Townsville and October 2 on the Gold Coast.

The Rugby Championship Final Round

The Rugby Championship concludes this Saturday with the final double-header between rugby’s Southern Hemisphere powerhouses.

The Gold Coast will be the home of Round 6 matches with Los Pumas v Wallabies (LIVE from 4:15pm AEST), followed by the Springboks v All Blacks (LIVE from 7:45pm AEST).

On Saturday, the in-form Wallabies can claim second place in The Rugby Championship with another win over the Pumas. Australia has won three straight Tests for the first time since 2017 and will welcome back abrasive loose forward Sean McMahon and veteran prop Greg Holmes back into their side on the Gold Coast.

Winless Argentina are in disarray, with six players now stuck in New South Wales following a COVID-19 border breach.

Following this match, fans can tune into the Springboks clash against the All Blacks with ad-free, live and on demand coverage only on Stan Sport from 7:45pm AEST.

New Zealand are 5-0 in the tournament after last weekend’s thrilling win over the world champions and will be out looking to complete a Rugby Championship clean sweep against the slumping Springboks on Saturday.
