Isn’t this the old version of Supercars just before it was changed to V8Supercars?
ASTC used 2L engines while Supercars (or Australian Touring Car Championship as it was called then) used 5L engines.
I’m sure the TV rights holder will have considerable sway on the schedule - if they want races to finish earlier they will.
A Nine/stan deal would be much better than the current disaster of deal. That sport has really sunk in terms of popularity. 10/P+ may be interested you’d think as well.
Starting a Supercars race earlier is easier said than done.
I think the Townsville 500 will be a good case study. It has a packed schedule on the weekend, with the main race not starting until 3.40pm, based on this year’s schedule.
If the main race is to finish before the 4pm NRL match, it will have to start by 2pm (and finger crossed there are no major incidents during the race). Working backwards, the support races will have to start even earlier, or some categories will have to be cut.
As Townsville 500 falls during the NRL season, how will Nine promote the race in Queensland TV during the week, if the NRL schedules a 4pm game involving the Cowboys or the Broncos against the Sunday race?
There is no way that moving the sport away from the platform that has three of the most popular forms of motorsport in the world, plus the footy codes and cricket, will improve the reach of Supercars, unless there’s a greater FTA component.
At this rate if Nine/Stan keep getting sports they could launch a new channel “9Sport”
Maybe Nine could do a deal with 10 to buy LCN1?
They would do what Seven currently do in the Southern States for this round.
Place it on GEM; seven place it on 7mate.
It’s the year 2024 with digital channels.
And who’s to say that Nine will have NRL rights in the near future if other networks are wanting them and NRL are open for change?
Nine will need a winter sport that still brings viewers to the channel.
What separates FTA and streaming services going forward will be sporting rights.
Supercars are crazy not to test the market, so this isn’t that much of a surprise - its also a good opportunity to see if the can get some improvement to the FTA component (Seven’s highlight packages really late at night take the piss a little bit).
Getting people to shift to Stan will be interesting - there is still a decent cohort of fans who whinge about it being on Fox/Kayo despite it being there for nearly 10 years now and Stan has developed a bit of a reputation of being the place motorsport goes to die.
I’d imagine Foxtel will be keen to keep it, I guess Seven might be too given they are rapidly finding themselves with a diminishing list of sports.
That said, the coverage has become quite stale, myopic and very much toes the corporate line to the viewers disadvantage.
Meanwhile many motorsport fans aren’t happy with how they treated the SpeedSeries and that several of their other motorsport rights are only available live (without any capacity to catch up).
I do wonder how much of this is about trying to keep Seven/Foxtel honest.
They need better FTA coverage - Seven have really dropped the ball in this round of rights (and I keep hearing they keep trying to have considerable sway over some of the decisions being made)
many fans also hate time certain races and the way the events are timetabled means that they are nearly a certainty if there are any delays on FTA races.
It can be overcome, but moving races to end at 4pm I’d imagine is something that Supercars would not be that interested in unless it delivered good money.
Better off using Nine’s multichannels IMO
PGA delayed with course ‘unplayable’
Today’s play at the PGA Championship has been abandoned, with the tournament reduced to 54 holes.
The PGA got underway this morning with some sunshine on the course, though there are isolated shows around
With the simulcast coverage, Nine have supplied Brenton Speed and Fox have supplied Warren Smith to fulfill the role of play by play broadcaster.

ISPS Handa Australian Open

Sounds like Peter Psaltis calling for Nine? There was a return from break pre-recorded drone montage of Melbourne’s sporting precinct and he talked about the MCG, Rod Laver Arena/Melbourne Park “upcoming”, AAMI Park “Rugby League” and “other football codes”, noting the city’s national and global sporting status.

Interesting that it’s 9Gem for the first two days but main channel on weekend, Nine not wanting to jeopardise weekday daytime programming especially leading-in to late arvo?
Or it could be Mat Thompson (Nine’s chief NRL caller).
Even I get confused between the voices of Thompson and Psaltis.
I think you could be right actually
