Nine Sports Broadcasting

VRC chairman Neil Wilson was in RSN studio this morning, speaking with Michael Felgate about the new deal. (Felgate was one of the presenters on 10’s Melbourne Cup coverage)

Nine has aired horse racing in the past for many decades and it has taken them almost 70 years to air the Melbourne Cup. Good luck to Nine this November airing their first ever Melbourne Cup.

The above article was summarised by The Age website like this:

Seven still has the FTA rights to the rest of Spring Racing Carnival (Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate etc.).

Also this would mean the Melbourne Cup Carnival has been on all 3 major commercial networks at least once in the history of Australian TV

The race that stops the nation is finally going to Njne. Am surprised thst its never been on Nine in its long histoey.

Before exclusivity contracts came in, ABC and commercials all covered it though rarely covered much more than the race itself.

I think the article meant to say that Nine cover the full Melbourne Cup Carnival. Ie. Stakes, Oaks Day, Derby Day.

The story received a lot of coverage on Nine’s Melbourne bulletin but just brief RVOs in other markets at 6pm.

Sydney/Brisbane 6pm. Longer reports at 4pm

Is this 2024? Or 2008!

Nine have become Seven… Never would anyone have imagined back then.

Seven '08: Aus Open, Beijing Olympics, Melb Cup.

Nine '24: Aus Open, Paris Olympics, Melb Cup.

And swap AFL for NRL. Just have to nab V8 Supercars now LOL. Well played Hugh Marks and Mike Sneesby.

Our summer sports have swapped

2016 - cricket on Nine
2024 - cricket on 7

Could add in the Wallabies too, irrelevant as they are now.

Of course if you go back just a couple of years to 2006 it looks much better for 7, gaining arguably the two most important sports from 9 in cricket and AFL.

Just thinking about it, rugby league is the only one thats really remained constant since the mid '90s.

Yes Fox and 9 have had a stranglehold on the nrl since the super league war.

I’ve been enjoying the throwback Sports Australia/Optus vision matches from the mid 1990s nrl.com has been uploading recently.

Relatively though, Nine’s five years of AFL broadcasting are fairly insignificant. They never even broadcasted a Grand Final. Just a blip in the radar of Seven’s AFL dominance.

Nine has a sports trifecta or quaddie if you include Rugby League. Olympics, Australian Open and Melbourne Cup Carnival all on WWOS in 2024.

So much so that most people would recall that Ten had the rights in the same period, but not Nine

They did aired the 2003 and 2005 Brownlow but not the Grand Final in those years.

Hope Nine gets the F1 back. Wimbledon, Swimming and F1 were their OG sports under the WWOS brand.

They aren’t what they used to be (bar Wimbledon especially if Aussies progress).

FINA Swimming Championships pretty much niche if not very niche now and Formula 1 they’d only be interested in the Australian GP at Albert Park (save for getting a sponsor for season-round coverage on 9Gem or something like ONE HD/10 Bold).

F1 isn’t really the same as it used to be when Nine first aired itm
