Nine Sports Broadcasting

What is says to me, is that Murdoch/fox is worried about what Nine have to offer.

They have a strong ability across a number of formats via 9now, STAN and their Free to Air networks.

This is typical Murdoch, start throwing mud at their competition. They did the same when the tennis/cricket rights happened.

They are under threat from an organisation that isn’t interested in doing simulcast deals with them.

I say bring it on.

PARA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

FROM PARIS LIVE ON 9NOW

STREAM LIVE AND FREE FROM JULY 8 TO 17

9Now will begin the road to the Paralympics when the Para World Athletics Championships stream live and free from July 8 to 17.

The best para athletes in the world will compete in France, with more than half the spots on our national team for the 2024 Paralympics up for grabs.

Australia will field a strong team of 39 athletes, including three reigning Paralympic champions – Madison de Rozario, James Turner and Vanessa Low – and seven world champions.

Plus, the next generation of Aussie para athletes, such as Angus Hincksman who at 17 is the youngest on the team, will line up in the middle-distance running events to show what the future holds for the green and gold.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Brent Williams, said: “The 2023 Para World Championships is a pivotal event for athletes and viewers on the journey to the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

“Across 10 days, 9Now will provide unprecedented coverage of Australia’s best taking it to the world, available to stream anywhere, anytime.”

Paralympics Australia Chief Executive Catherine Clark said: “This is an exciting milestone for our partnership with Nine which aims to bring Paralympic sport to more Australians than ever before.

“We are so thrilled that Australian audiences, particularly fans of athletics and Para-sport generally, will be able to follow the progress of our talented Australian Para athletics team across Nine’s platforms, the new home of the Paralympics.”

Two-time Australian Paralympian and reigning world champion in 100m and 400m T36 Para-athletics, James Turner, said: “It’s really important for viewers to have this access to the World Para Athletics Championships so they can learn more about the sport and our team to build excitement for the Paris Paralympic Games next year.

“Having the World Championships on 9Now is going to be fantastic for giving us momentum towards next year. It’s also hopefully going to increase the interest in Para-athletics, and I think it can do wonders for our sport.”

Does anyone know how the Telstra exclusive netball games were produced? Were they livestream levels or were they the same as the Nine games? Did they use the same talent or others? And what was the watermark and microphone branding?

Good to see. What was all that crying from certain sections of the media when Nine didn’t announce Para-rights at the same time as their Olympics? :joy: Did Seven ever broadcast this sort of thing?..

Exact same as the Nine games. Similar to the Nine/Stan rugby games or 10/Paramount+ soccer matches. I suspect if Stan was around, they would have carried the games.

Seven did cover Paralympic sports, for example from 2019:

Like a broken record but they need to move to MPEG4HD for all multichannels.
Goes with all the networks. It’s 2023, no more excuses.

Agree that we’ve reached the point where equipment compatibility is not really much of a barrier to going MPEG-4 HD for everything.
I do think there would be a benefit having an MPEG-2 SD simulcast of the main channel (at say, potato quality 1-2Mbps bitrate) for a period of say 6-12 months after a hypothetical transition in order to at least give an opportunity for those who need more time to transition without complete loss of service straight away.

Yep, run a crawler during that time on the MPEG2 services saying “this service will be switched off at X”, similar to the analogue switchoff.

That would give you a sore thumb a bit like how watching tennis from side on gives you a sore neck.

The are the WIN TV bit rates. You can imagine how much clearer 9HD looks than in metro areas.

8 SD 3.3 Mpeg 2
80 9HD 7.7 Mpeg 4
81 9Gem 2.6 Mpeg 4
82 9Go 2.1 Mpeg 4
83 9Life 2.4 Mpeg 4
84 9TVSN 1.5 Mpeg 4
85 9Gold 2.3 Mpeg 4

So only the second week of World Swimming Championships (swimming events) will be shown on TV. It will be interesting to see how Nine juggle coverage of swimming against the fifth Ashes test, plus NRL and NRLW.

Coverage of week one (diving, water polo etc.) is TBC.

I guess Week 1 is on 9now
