Nine’s Wide World of Sports is teeing up with Golf Australia on a two-year broadcast deal to deliver golf fans Live and Free coverage of the biggest events on both the 9Network and 9Now.

The nation’s two biggest golf tournaments, the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship from Royal Queensland in November, and the ISPS HANDA Australian Open in December at Victoria Golf Club and Kingston Heath, will join Nine’s suite of live sport this summer as golf soars to new heights.

Australia’s top players will be leading the charge, including current world No.3 Cameron Smith, Minjee Lee, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Hannah Green.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Brent Williams, said: “The Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship are premium tournaments with a rich history and Wide World of Sports is proud to be a broadcast partner for the next two years. It will be the first time Nine broadcasts the Australian PGA Championship, although I have a feeling that the network may have shown the Australian Open many years ago before Seven picked up the rights.

You’re correct, back in the 1970s was tied into Jack Nicklaus’s redesign of the Australian Golf Club where Kerry Packer was a prominent member and included television rights.
ABC had the rights to the Open during the 1989s before Seven held them.

Australian women’s basketball will step onto the court with 9Now when the Cygnett WNBL 2022/23 season is available Live, Free and On Demand to stream from Friday, November 4.

Hoops fans will receive 68 games in total exclusively on 9Now, the most free-to-air coverage in the competition’s history, as Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson makes her return alongside seven other Australian Opals.

Across the 16-round season, 9Now will broadcast four games per week, beginning Friday night when the competition’s most successful club – Canberra’s UC Capitals, go up against the Bendigo Spirit with tip-off at 6.30pm AEDT.

9Now will make it easier than ever before to catch up on the latest with full match replays and highlights available On Demand only a few hours after each game.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Brent Williams, said: “Nine and the Wide World of Sports are thrilled to be partnering with one of the strongest, elite female basketball competitions in the world. 9Now will provide the perfect destination for new and emerging fans of the WNBL to engage with the sport they love, at any time and on any device they choose.”

Aussie swimming superstars join Nine’s broadcast of FINA World Swimming Championships

Australian swimming champions Ian Thorpe, Giaan Rooney and Ariarne Titmus will headline Nine’s Wide World of Sports’ all-star commentary line up for the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Melbourne.

With some of the world’s best short course swimmers heading Down Under from December 13-18, the trio of world champions will be poolside to provide expert insight on all the action.

Making the announcement on Sports Sunday, Thorpe said he was excited to share his expert knowledge with Channel 9 viewers who had once watched his greatest triumphs on the international stage.

“It’s going to be great to be able to share my knowledge back with viewers ,” he said.

"I love discussing the intricacies of swimming and sharing those insights, which hopefully educates more people towards our sport.

“I’m particularly excited to be working alongside Giaan, who I grew up with, and it’s also fantastic to see Ariarne, another Olympic champion, come on board and give her understanding of the sport.”

Rooney echoed a similar sentiment, marking a homecoming of sorts in her acclaimed media career since retiring from swimming in 2006.

The FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) will be broadcast exclusively, live and free on Channel 9 and 9Now in primetime.

“After swimming my last race on Channel 9 and starting my broadcasting career as part of the legendary Wide World of Sports swimming commentary team, it feels very familiar and natural to be showcasing the sport of swimming for Nine once again,” she said.

“This time, not only do we have many of our current Olympic superstars such as Emma McKeon, Kaylee McKeown, Mollie O’Callaghan, Mack Horton and Kyle Chalmers going for gold in the pool but I’m honoured to be on the mic with Olympic legend, Ian Thorpe and current Olympic champion, Ariarne Titmus.”

As the reigning Olympic champion for the 200m and 400m freestyle, Titmus said she was eager to experience racing from a different perspective.

“Thorpey has always been a hero of mine and Giaan is one of the best swimming broadcasters anywhere in the world, so to be alongside them is something I’m really looking forward to it and it’s a fresh challenge for me,” she said.

Do we know who will be doing the play by play calling of the swimming for Nine?

I think she is resting up for next year’s 50m FINA championships (July 2023) and also the Paris 2024 Olympics.

This probably suggests how Nine think it’ll rate vs Tipping Point/Afternoon News/Hot Seat, but couldn’t they have it from 12pm - 3pm on the main channel, for exposure if anything?
