Saturday 15 July at 2.00pm Queensland
This year marks the 39th anniversary of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, and Channel Nine was there to capture all the highlights as 25,000 competitors took on the world-famous event.
This Saturday at 2.00pm on Nine, catch all the action in the two-day competition that attracted people of all ages and ability – taking part in numerous races and facing many and varied challenges. These included the Wheelchair Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Wheelchair 15km, Southern Cross University 10km Run, The Star Gold Coast 5.7km Challenge and Zespri Junior Dash 4km and 2km, and of course the daunting 42km Gold Coast Airport Marathon itself.
The marathon course runs all the way from Burleigh Heads to Runaway Bay, showcasing the beautiful beaches and broadwater of Queensland’s spectacular Gold Coast. This world-renowned race has the glowing reputation as one of the flattest and fastest courses in the world.
This year viewers will see a new race record set in the women’s competition, with Ethiopia’s Abebech Bekele beating the course time by nearly a minute with a personal best of 2 hours 25 minutes and 34 seconds.
Japan’s Takuya Noguchi won the men’s race also with a personal-best time, while countryman Yuki Kawauchi had to settle for third place. Noguchi held off defending champion Kenneth Mungara of Kenya to cross the line in a winning time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 59 seconds.
The program will capture all the colour and competition that took place over the action-packed weekend with expert commentary by Tim Gilbert and Steve Moneghetti.
