Nine Sports Broadcasting

Kathryn Harby-Williams was not re-elected at today’s Netball Australia AGM, but players will not boycott this weekend’s Super Netball matches in the interest of fans, corporate partners and broadcast obligations, but “some form of protest” would occur. Surely 9Gem’s coverage this weekend will have to mention the infighting.

Weren’t more games live on Network TEN than the current deal.

###MIDDO AND THE MOLE

Wide World of Sports today announced new deals with the Guru of rugby league, David Middleton, and the sport’s most mysterious oracle, The Mole, to provide content across its digital and social platforms.

David Middleton – or “Middo” as he’s known to viewers and fans alike – will provide readers with pre-match analysis of every game, deep statistical previews before all the big clashes, historical and quirky stats across the NRL, and quick fast facts on Nine’s live matches.

Nine’s Head of Sport Digital, Patrick Effeney, said: “No one knows more about rugby league than David Middleton, and now we’ll be able to show our digital readers and viewers just how much he knows. He’s called the Guru for good reason.”

David Middleton said: “I have been privileged to work with Nine for the past 20 years, preparing statistical information for the NRL commentary team. I’m really excited to be able to use this data for the WWOS Digital team, which will be great for fans of rugby league, and I feel honoured and grateful to be part of such a wonderful team here at Channel Nine.”

Nine has stepped in to rescue The Mole following the closure of Rugby League Week. Moley’s unique brand of reporting and tipping will now appear exclusively on Wide World of Sports.

Patrick Effeney said: “The Mole’s honest and irreverent style now has a home on WWOS, and we’re looking forward to seeing what scoops he can bring in 2017 and beyond.”

The Mole said: “I’m excited and thrilled at this new challenge. Nine is the benchmark for sport in Australia and it is an honour to come onboard. The Mole has a loyal following and I look forward to bringing breaking news, some laughs – and maybe a few first tryscorers – to my followers on Nine.”

Nine’s Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said: “We’re thrilled that both Middo and The Mole are joining WWOS as we push ahead with creating great content across all platforms to engage with both audience and advertisers.”

The Mole’s first exclusive column will appear this coming Tuesday on wwos.nine.com.au.

Middleton’s columns will appear on Tuesday and Thursday.

Netball Australia yesterday released the international test series fixture for 2017. The Australian Diamonds will return to Brisbane for the first time in 8 years when they take on England on August 26 as part of the Quad Series. The Constellation Cup series against New Zealand in October will feature matches in Adelaide and Sydney. All matches involving the Diamonds will be shown live on 9Gem or Nine.

Suncorp Super Netball semi finals (all times AEST):
Saturday June 3
Major semi final: Melbourne Vixens v Sunshine Coast Lightning (Margaret Court Arena, 4pm)
Minor semi final: Giants Netball v Collingwood Magpies (State Sports Centre, Sydney Olympic Park, 7pm)

According to Nine Network schedule thread, Nine has gained the rights to the soccer friendly between Brazil and Argentina at the MCG next Friday, June 9. By extension it should also air Brazil’s friendly against Australia at the same venue on June 13. A formal announcement is expected this week.

Good news. Football on commercial free to air. At least it’s not on ABC who will no doubt stuff up the coverage again.

I’m guessing both games will air on 9Gem nationwide.

The games next week are on the main channel in Melbourne and Adelaide and will be on 9Go! elsewhere.

Any word if these Soccer matches are streamed live on the 9Now app?

I think 9 have had the rights to the mid year MCG friendlies for the last few years, although weren’t they previously club friendlies?

Nine showed the International Champions Cup at the MCG for the past two years, but they were club matches not one-off international friendlies.
It will be Nine’s biggest sporting week of the year:
Wednesday - AFL Footy Show
Thursday - live NRL, World Cup qualifier: Australia v Saudi Arabia on 9GO! (simulcast of Fox Sports telecast)
Friday - live NRL, Brazil v Argentina soccer friendly
Saturday - Suncorp Super Netball preliminary final on 9Gem
Sunday - live NRL
Tuesday - Australia v Brazil soccer friendly on 9GO!

BeIN Sports hold exclusive rights to the International Champions Cup this season. No matches on 9

Partly because the ICC won’t be held in Australia this year, due to the two Brazil matches.

Ah, that’s it, couldn’t remember what they actually were or if they had any meaning.

9Gem has NRL on Friday nights.

###2017 SUPER NETBALL FINALS

Nine began its official Suncorp Super Netball Finals countdown today, announcing it will broadcast the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final - LIVE on Saturday June 17 from 7pm AEST on Channel Nine and 9Now.

Grand Final teams will be decided over the coming weeks as they battle it out in the Semi- Finals and Preliminary Final – beginning Saturday June 3 from 4pm AEST on 9GEM and 9Now.

Hosting all the Suncorp Super Netball finals action will be Clint Stanaway. He will be joined by an expert commentary team including Australian netball legends Liz Ellis, Anne Sargeant, Cath Cox, Sharelle McMahon and Sue Gaudion.

Courtside reporters will include Nine sports presenters Julie Snook, Tom Mitchell, Christine Ahern and Laura Spurway.

Nine’s Head of Netball, Keeley Devery, said: “It really has been an amazing first year of Suncorp Super netball. After 59 incredible matches to have the Grand Final in prime time on Channel Nine is the perfect result for the competition and for netball.”

Former Australian captain and Wide World of Sports commentator Liz Ellis said: “Finals are what you dream of in pre-season, so for these athletes it’s a chance to show how good they really are, and whether they can make their dreams come true at the end of a breakout season for netball. The athletes are nervous and the commentators are excited!”
SUNCORP SUPER NETBALL will also be broadcast via Telstra TV and the Netball Live app.

Even though the Adelaide Thunderbirds won’t feature in the netball finals, it’s still disappointing for SA viewers not getting the grand final live on the main channel. It is straight forward to cut the news back to 30 minutes and show the GF from 6.30pm local time, against the AFL on Seven (Port Adelaide v Brisbane Lions, live or delayed).

Now, fingers crossed for the right commentators for the GF. Sue Gaudion and Liz Ellis, please. No Anne Sargeant!
