Nine (Southern Cross)

Have been hearing a few things in relation to the evolution of News on SCA. I can confirm plans are already being made for Nine News local editions to launch if not the day of, very soon after the affiliation agreement commences. Studios are being planned and staff are being hired.

Also expect some news to come re Nine Gold Coast in the next few months if not weeks.

Can’t wait to see “9 News Wollongong” - that is gonna piss WIN right off!

While this sounds like excellent news, do you have a source?

Isn’t that what NTD8 did/does with its weekend bulletins? The first half is a direct relay from Sydney, with a local presenter coming in, reading some local headlines, a report or two, and then local sport and weather?
On the other hand, why couldn’t it change?Currently WIN and TDT rate reasonably similar figures - similar enough that WIN would likely lose very little revenue (if any at all) by changing to TEN for their main channel, which would have the advantage of giving them more consistency across their network (think cheaper branding etc if their main channel was a TEN affiliate everywhere).
Yes, very true. I agree with parts of both sides of the debate. Not sure either way, but the joint venture may even cease to exist. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out. Either way, it’s going to be all very messy in these regions. Thanks again, Bruce! :relieved:

You can’t understand why WIN would be doing so poorly in Tassie?

WIN axed their weekend news in one of ‘Bruce’s brainwaves’ a few years ago and despite reinstating it, have paid the price since.

They shafted their weekend viewers, they went to sample SC and have never returned.
Precisely. Who could forget this promo Southern Cross ran with at the time showing WIN up for lack of local News content: https://youtube.com/watch?v=M4rEhLbgKVk

Coupled with a revolving door of presenters, there hasn’t been the consistency since Tom Payne left to build a loyal following.

Compare this with SC, how long has Jo been there? The only thing that changes there is her surname.
Yep, recently think Peter Hughes, in which he lasted just 12 months before being shown the door late last year. And all that after a big promotional push before he started in the new role.

I’ll answer your question whether you were legitimately asking or not - Jo has been there around 20 years. First started out on weekends then when Steve Titmus moved on in the early 2000s she took over the weeknight position.

In a more parochial like Tasmania or even Perth - the station with the leading news service often is the leading station overall. That’s why 7 has always been so strong in Perth and Adelaide. And SC in Tasmania. All are “heritage” stations - same with NBN in Newcastle.
Yep, basically. It’s like the viewers lose their remotes and can’t change the channel. :yum:

To co-locate with SCA’s radio assets in Broadbeach, perhaps?

Yep I do, but I ain’t saying who or what it is other than, you couldn’t get a better source in relation to this news.

Great news, Do you know if there will be a Central West NSW service as we currently have 2 services with Prime7 and WIN.
Really exciting news, glad that is happening. Do you know if Nine are going to employ some Win News staff? For Victoria, Nine GTV just re-employed James Talia… wouldn’t surprise me if he gets a bulletin.

NTD8 used to do that. But not any more. the Darwin station is very much like NBN producing 1 hour news bulletin including local, national and world news 7 days a week.

Lots of television sales positions currently being advertised on the Southern Cross Austereo site but no positions for journalists.

I have no doubt Alison Drower would be fielding expressions of interest from young journalism grads and other interested parties. It has only been a week since the affiliation agreement was announced so I wouldn’t think their plans for expansion of news would be that advanced.
What time should we expect them- 5, 5.30, 7, 7.30?

I’m thinking we might see something like this… Using Victoria for an example.

6.00pm GTV9 News
6.30pm Local Southern Cross News inserted into the bulletin. (10 minutes of local News/Sport/Weather)
6.40pm GTV9 Sport
6.55pm GTV9 Weather

Don’t mind that idea, however along that path I put the local insert at about 6.10. I also would mind the idea with an Afternoon/Evening Local News bulletin so around 5pm or 5.30. Hopefully as seen on the Gold Coast, that might help with the lead into the 6pm News.

Based on the information @Read_It_First has provided, as well what has been released by SCA so far.

I think we may end up seeing SCA producing full Nine news bulletins in the style of NBN News, with national and international stories coming through directly from Nine themselves, and local windows with stories covered by SC. Using full 9 News graphics and branding.

Ideally, SCA would produce one live bulletin each for QLD, NSW and VIC with pre-recorded local inserts for each market inside the live bulletins.

I think with help from 9 metro, bulletins like these could be a great success.
I couldn’t think of anything worse. I really hate not having getting to see the ‘national’ Morning and Afternoon News in place of state-wide coverage and to think they are going to replace the state 6pm News bulletins with local content- :head_bandage:

I do fear though that local news in a combined bulletin could struggle to be adequate. Often on NBN, there are only 2 local reports in the bulletin before sport is aired at around 6:45, particularly outside of Newcastle.

The windows can also make a real mess of the bulletin, with related stories being aired 10 mins apart, or an important local item not being covered until say 6:15, as we see now on NBN.

It would also mean SCA would have to rely solely on prepackaged reports as NBN do, ie no live crosses to a reporter on the scene for a breaking news story.

I think I’d rather see SCA go with separate local bulletins at 5:30 or 7pm.

Could do something similar to what they do here in Adelaide where we have a local news at 5:00pm then Hot Seat at 5:30pm, then National news at 6pm.

I really don’t see how having a local bulletin for regional viewers at 6pm is any worse than having the main state/capital city news from Nine.

If anything, regional viewers would probably be better served with a composite bulletin containing local, statewide, national and international news content. You’d still see coverage of the days big stories, but regional viewers (in theory, at least) wouldn’t have to sit through the local stories from Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane that are of little relevance to them currently seen on Nine’s “statewide” 6pm bulletins.

The concept of a regional news service containing local/state/national/international content is hardly new either. NBN and Tasmanian regional stations have run this sort of format for their news for years. And shock horror…even viewers in major metropolitan markets like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have mostly always (to the best of my knowledge anyway) had their news services covering local, statewide, national and international news content.

With the right promotion, I can’t see why a composite news couldn’t work for SCA Nine too. I’m not sure what other viewers think (especially in regional areas), but I would personally rather have all the most important and relevant news of the day (whether it’s local, state, national or international content) delivered in one hour rather than how some of our regional networks broadcast news right now with either 30 minutes of filler-packed local news and a half hearted attempt at a “national” bulletin or having to sit through an hour or metropolitan news (complete with irrelevant content) before the local news starts!

Fair enough and you raise some really good points. I probably shouldn’t jump the gun as I haven’t seen a format like this (sounds like the presenters need to be REALLY good for me to like this). What I currently get from Win News and Seven Local News I hate to the bottom line (the weather is the only thing tolerable). It is pre-recorded and in most cases garbage that I have either heard LIVE on local radio, read in the news paper, heard through word-of-mouth. With social media around these days I certainly don’t think it is acceptable to have pre-recorded news -recorded about 6hrs before it airs. Most of you know what I think of having currently two content repeats of 6pm News here in QLD with the Morning and Afternoon local editions. I think this style COULD work in QLD due to the locally produced Morning/Afternoon News but for somewhere in Sydney for example- replacing Peter Overton reading the 6pm News even in regional areas with local presenters, I am sorry won’t work. And these circumstances, I am afraid most will ‘make the switch’ to Seven News at 6. I would prefer to keep the current 6pm News and maybe have this Nine Local News- First at Five (beating Seven Local News)…
