Nine (Southern Cross)

Same here, but they do use the exclamation point with GO!

well at least they apologise for inconvenience, SC9 usually plays infomercials between 1am-5am. Maybe they’re apologising to the infomercial companies who booked space during those times.

9HD sponsor board? Not quite, SCA add the add-on “HD” watermark a little too early yet again.

The HD add-on seems to come on and off at random times sometimes.
Sometimes it doesn’t appear until well after the PRG, othertimes it appears immediately after the ad break

Other times, when 9 transitions from one show to another without ads, the HD add-on seems to disappear for a little while about 5 seconds after the 2nd show starts before reappearing.

A couple of days ago, I even saw the HD addition stay on during the start of the ad break when SCA were showing CSAs.

I’ve even seen the Today style HD addition stay on for a little bit during the morning news after Today Extra finishes.

Does Nine have the ability to do the switching for SCA, or at least send ‘triggers’ down the feed line so the computers at SCA playout can trigger the appearance or disappearance of the HD tag without human intervention? Because either SCA are doing it manually with someone literally sitting at a desk flicking a switch, or someone at either Nine/SCA isn’t programming the system to trigger correctly.

This stuff is fairly simple and once-off in the world of television broadcasting. American networks, especially Fox, do this with dozens of affiliates simultaneously and it works seamlessly. In the instance of Fox, coming back to a program from an ad break, a trigger is sent from Fox playout to the local affiliate to trigger a local watermark for 30 secs, before that disappears and is replaced by a generic Fox logo which is also generated at a local level I believe. The only aspects of Fox’s presentation which are ‘dirty’ or burnt in I believe are the PRGs and credit squeezes, and with the latter some local networks have been known to show a news update during credits.

In the grand scheme of things, an HD tag should be easy to get right.

Another example of SCA’s sponsor boards using the 9 graphics.

Relating to our previous discussion about the SCA9 HD watermark.

I recorded this last Wednesday, just after ACA returned from break and during the transition to RBT, which shows what I mentioned about the HD appearing and disappearing at odd times.

But with the way I see the “HD” add-on appearing and disappearing at random times, even to the point of it still being on during local ad-breaks at times, you would think it could be manually done. Although, in saying that, in the instance of a timing-error when SCA abruptly cut their local ad-breaks short, when you’ll see Melbourne ads still running and the “HD” addition usually appears 10secs after whether the “dirty” ad-break has ended and returned to the program or not.

I’m surprised after almost two months they haven’t sorted these issues out already.

Tonight has been a terrible night in regards to these issues. The “HD” add-on has been up for entire ad-breaks only to be removed when the actual program is on leaving the logo by itself like it is on 9SD. A lot of Melbourne ads/promos/sponsor boards have been let through tonight, too.

Some examples of the issues described above

SC9 was letting a lot of Brisbane ads through on our feed here yesterday as well. No idea what was going on.

I saw one occasion where SCAs ad break abruptly disappeared mid-ad to then show a Brisbane ad, which was then abruptly cut mid-ad to an SCA Community Service ad. It was weird!

Not too much exciting here,
But here’s the weather and closer from 9 News Sydney that was shown here in Townsville last week when SCA randomly switched from 9 News Brisbane to 9 News Sydney between ad breaks.

It’s not just Southern Cross having issues. Nine in Melbourne had the HD part of the watermark on contantly even during promos for a couple of segments of the block last night, even when the Nine logo wasn’t on.

Just saw SCA using a specialised 9 The Block sponsor board.
Didn’t cap it. It looked like a proper 9 style sponsor board, however it had the normal SCA voice over.

Does 9 Metro use specialised The Block sponsor boards?

I’ve managed to capture it:

Yeah, I’m pretty sure Nine does use that (but with their own voiceovers/music of course) Program Themed-Sponsor Billboard for The Block!

Local viewers would’ve gone “What the hell?! Why should we care about what’s happening weather-wise in Sydney/NSW?”

Things like that have happened down here, too. We’ve had 9 Melbourne up to the preview for sport (mostly AFL stories included, of course) only to receive 9 Sydney after the conclusion of the ad-break (with lots of NRL stories instead, of course).

Definitely seems like there’s more and more issues similar to this with SCA9 of late.

If you think the Townsville viewers would have been confused, I shudder to think what the reaction in Ayr, near Townsviile (which gets the same feed) would have been like.

same with 9NNSW

Heads exploding in Ayr is a common thing I hear.
