Nine Radio (Talk)

Nine would need to improve their bottom line, profitability in the radio division has been underperforming since Nine took over. Their approach hadn’t resonated with clients.

Jacqui Felgate has been like fingers down a chalk board.
Not a good fit for the Drive show.

Jason Morrison is officially back at 2GB. Filling in for Pat Panetta in Sydney/Brisbane for this weekend.

Why won’t they give Jason a daytime shift?

It’s just a warm-up for Jason. He is filling in for Mark Levy over the upcoming two-week survey break.

I hope he is better than Marks usual replacement.

I’d say that’s Nine Radio bringing a stronger announcer in Jason (rather than Luke Grant), as even the slightest break could mean listeners switching and trialling 2SM’s Chris Smith.

2GB listeners are hanging by a thread to jump to 1269AM between 9-noon.

The ratings don’t seem to reflect that since Ray Hadley left. Luke Grant’s right wing bias is worst than both Levy and Hadley I am looking forward to listening to someone different. I liked it when John Stanley filled in as he is a bit more central aligned and is just a better presenter

Levy is better on the Continuous Call Team and WWOS. Should’ve been left there. He’s 2GB’s version of Gavin Morris and Daniel Gibson - someone that should’ve stayed in their lane.

I enjoyed Deb Knight on Money News when I’d occasionally listen. Sorry to see her go. I wonder who will replace her.

Since she began hosting Money News (in November 2023), Knight has more than proved herself with the show achieving a strong 13.3 share during the Monday to Thursday 7pm-8pm timeslot in the latest radio ratings survey. This ranked her number one in the country for the timeslot, more than doubling her share in Queensland, where she is broadcast on Brisbane’s 4BC.

Yeah, but I felt she was wasted talent on Money News. She’s made for TV. Better to let someone who is purely radio host the show moving forward. Hopefully not Scott Heywood. Is it just me, or does his audio sound very different when he hosts? It’s as if he is hosting/recording the show from home.

When I listened to the afternoon show I quite liked it I didn’t think she should have been replaced. I think she should have been ACAs host instead of Alison Langdon. I hope she still presents ACA on Friday and Saturday.

She doesn’t present Friday’s, only Saturday’s.

Deb hasn’t presented on Friday’s regularly since Ally took over as host.

Nine’s Talk Stations Now on Apple Watch

Nine's Talk Stations Now on Apple Watch

Nine Radio’s award winning talk radio stations are now available to livestream through the Apple smartwatch, enabling listeners with cellular-enabled devices to stream their favorite talk radio stations directly from their wrist. The innovative development provides unparalleled freedom and convenience for listeners seeking to enjoy live and local content on the go, without the need for a smartphone.

The new smartwatch app underscores Nine Radio’s commitment to device ubiquity, ensuring continuous access to popular stations 2GB, 3AW, 4BC, and 6PR for listeners on the move. The familiar user interface ensures a clear and intuitive listening experience, with essential metadata displayed on the now-playing screen.

Key features of the new Nine Radio smartwatch app include:

  • Live Radio Streaming: Direct access to all Nine Radio stations, including 3AW, 2GB, 4BC, and 6PR.
  • Intuitive Design: A familiar user interface designed for ease of use on a smartwatch.
  • Quick Access: Users can access their favorite station directly from their watch’s home screen.
  • Now Playing Screen: Displays essential metadata for the current program.
  • Smart Stack Integration: Allows users to pause/play streams or access the app.
  • Playing Now Control: Provides control over the stream and casting options.

Tom Malone, Nine Radio Managing Director, said: “This is about providing true freedom and flexibility in how our audience consumes audio content. Radio used to be on the bench top or side table, then it was in your pocket via your phone, now it’s on your wrist. Listeners can escape all of their screens for a walk or run, or trip to the shops, and still be listening to their favourite news, sport, opinions and entertainment via Nine Radio’s smartwatch app. It’s a seamless and untethered way to stay connected.”

Mia Stern, Head of Digital Growth at Nine Radio, added: “Our strategy is simple – maximise discoverability and accessibility. The new smartwatch apps allow listeners to tune in to their favourite talk radio station anywhere, any time and on any device. We’ve made it incredibly easy to use, with instant station access from your watch face and a user interface designed to feel instantly familiar and crystal clear.”

Nine Radio is committed to continuous improvement, with plans for on-demand content and AFL pop-ups in the Apple Watch app and CarPlay later in 2025.

That’s all well and good but how about Nine Radio dump the NTS channel and lease the 64kbs of spectrum to Bloomberg News or even to ARN or Nova for a music channel.

NTS really is a waste of DAB spectrum IMO.

You could say that about the rest of Nine Radio. Especially the sausage fest that’s 2GB.

3AW’s Denis Walter was awarded for his services to public and community entertainment in the 2025 Victoria Day Awards at Melbourne Town Hall yesterday. Chief of social enterprise legal service Anika Legal, Noel Lim, was named Victorian of the Year.

If Nine was after selling its talkback stations, could Nova be a potential buyer?
