Nine Radio (Talk)

And sometimes they don’t even use a current or previous official publicity still! It can be the worst possible image of them :joy:

I am told that management has approached Clive Robertson to do a few nights but he said no. Maybe they should ask Brian Wilshire. They have to do something before the rot sets in.

Brian Carlton would be good to hear again on 2gb overnights.

Surely you jest Rossco ! That old fossil. I had more than enough of his conspiracy theories from his many years on 2GB. I’d rathet have Mike Williams if 2GB get that desperate…

Just an observation but it is quite interesting the chatter and volume of it that relates to an overnight program in this thread… I would imagine it’s not really a slot that is a massive audience or of high importance to Nine radio.
Yes I know there was the outrage when networked in Melbourne, but it’s interesting

love to know the full story as to why a radio legend like Mike Jeffries is only on 1 night a week, mid-dawn on 2GB.

Wasted talent, just like Jason Morrison.

It is certainly very intriguing i agree. As i mentioned some posts back its a very weird 3-way for 2GB overnights across the weekly roster. I also agree that MJ is a legend and only 1 shift weekly is a crime against great broadcasting. Might be a bit of a holding pattern whilst Mike gets himself back in shape. He mentioned on Monday that he is on a very strict diet which is working well. I believe 2GB are accommodating MJ as he is a legend and giving him every chance to add to the workload in time. I really hope he adds weekends + Mondays as the next step. 2GB may also consider Mike as a major shift floater going forward?

Yes I get what you mean, both of these guys would be close to 80! Brian Carlton was a good suggestion and if my memory serves me correctly he worked some overnights at the old 2UE but Mike Williams I think not.

I don’t get the Pat Panetta hate by 2GB listeners on here. From listening in it is clear that Pat makes an effort to discuss the news topics and keeps the program on track not letting callers ramble on.

How about a woman? Or someone under 60?

In this day and age, I listen to the overnight show on podcast. I know I am cheating :grinning:.

MJ is just unique. Maybe like Kyle to some, just something unique, people like. If Kyle and Jackie were easily replicated they would have moved on years ago. Maybe Kyle and maybe Jackie will be on 2gb in there 60s/ 70s.

Anyway off topic , I don’t think it is easy to replace someone younger and the listener has an automatic connection with that person. In the case MJ , he probably didn’t rate consistently to remain in demand by commercial radio which is a shame. Most people in radio do fall off in ratings with a few exceptions. Even the great John Laws struggled in the ratings in his final years and the late great Doug Mulray had huge success at breakfast but the his ratings did decline.

From a Sydney perspective, talk radio Overnights has been important for many listeners especially 2GB / 4BC as we have been used to high quality programming and presentation, most notably the highly intelligent Michael McLaren for 10+ years throughout the wee small hours. Its one reason why (imho) many of us northerners resent the mostly dozy and comatose Overnights that sometimes get piped up here from 3AW. The contrast is massive …

I found that Michael used to waffle in the early hours, come quite witty between 3 and 4 and then quite serious after 4 leading into breakfast. It is worth noting that overnights they have a team of 3 including Dale Sinden as Executive Producer. I would imagine with 3AW it is just the announcer and a panel operator and thus the lack of decent content. I am led to believe that the 3AW Newsroom shuts down in the evening and everything comes out of Sydney but I could be wrong.

Snaps of the “Spruced up studio” for afternoons.

Tony made mention of the need to be well presented on air. They have put a logo on the back plasma, lighting has been upgraded and a soon to be announced named pot plant in the corner.

“We know Australians turn to talk in times of crisis, and that’s been reinforced with recent breaking news events, but they also rely on us for entertainment, excitement and analysis. And with the footy in full swing and the Paris Olympic Games now just 72 days away, our streaming audience will be unprecedented.”

So did I. They keep mentioning how the rest of the building is empty and they are the only ones left in there.
