Nine Radio (Talk)

Correct. It seems 2GB has phased out mentions of “873” on air as much as possible.

Given this era of smart speakers and DAB+, there isn’t much reason for listeners to have to manually search the dial for 873AM … Not unless you’ve recently purchased a used car.

I suppose the same could be said about KIIS’ new Sydney studios and K&J’s new bus. No mention of 106.5 on them.

For all the talk about Felgate, the blowtorch should also be on O’Keefe since he’s not doing much better than Jim Wilson did:

If he turned up regularly to his show it would probably help. He seems to be away half the time. A bit like Peter Overton on Nine. I just couldn’t be bothered.

Darren James at 3AW throwing down the gauntlet to Ray Hadley at 2GB this morning. Claiming either the NSW police commissioner has done the wrong thing or Ray lied when recounting his story last week about telling the father of one of the Sydney stabbing victims that their daughter was killed. As he pointed out, it is police protocol to confirm with next of kin before confirming with any other person about the identity of deaths.

My only suggestion would be that the father had given Ray Hadley permission to find out on his behalf. But if not true, it’s quite a serious breach by NSW Police.

Isn’t Darren James just a cohost for Life & Technology?

He hosts weekend breakfast which runs from 6am to 12pm. Which on Sundays includes Sunday morning program which is news / topical.

Oh “The Mouth from the South” absolutely ruins Life & Technology, why doesn’t he just shut up. I no longer listen to this programme.

However the audience need to be reminded of the benefits of DAB+, the ease of listening, quality of audio

One of AW’s longest serving voices, going back many decades and known to many, has shifted from show to show over that time, but for some 20 years now has hosted the weekend morning shows (previously Buy Swap and Sell, The Big Backyard with Jane Edmundson, The Big House & Streetwise with Bill Kuznichuck and Sunday Morning (which still airs) with Nick McCallum and John Michael Howsen (and now Heidi Murphy). The former shows merged mostly into one ‘Weekend Breakfast’ now. Also a well known Collingwood man.

$20 this will be the “top story” and depth on today Drive program. It’s already been done to death on Mornings and Afternoons today.

And I was right. :woman_facepalming: first half an hour is the same topic and same opinions being given.

“I’d also love young mothers to tell us how hard it is being a young mum” is this really drive content? It’s afternoon show content.

The only thing I’d say is, were Nine/3AW wanting to attract more female listeners, particularly younger and thus more advertisers for those targets vs older males?

Today was the absolute final straw for me.

The only takeaway is that she was giving away a lot of wine to callers who didn’t agree with her.

Would I be accurate in saying that JF was siding with the mother?

She was siding with the mother more than the mother was siding with herself.

That’s the issue.

She is wrong. Getting caught up in all the drama.

Tom would have approached it differently. He often pulls apart these incidents and looks at the whole picture. That’s why people tune in to him, he takes an analytical approach to these things. Jac obviously went straight in to bat for the mother. The listeners won’t like that.

Quite enjoyed Jacqui Felgate with Matthew Richardson on this afternoon talking Northside v Southside Melbourne. Good local content.

I get there is a ‘pile-on’ by some here and your minds will likely never change re Felgate.
However, from a programmer’s perspective, localism in talk radio is everything. Being connected within your community as someone of trust, to many across important demo’s is rare, but with over 320K followers on instagram JF has that.

It’s the demographics of hers and Tom’s potential audience which are attractive to 3AW and to the new advertising dollars they can perhaps, entice to the station.

Radio listening has evolved and is changing in audience consumption and delivery (DAB, Podcast highlights, Streaming etc).

The programming changes AW has made in Mornings, Afternoons and Drive are a conscious effort to grow the 40 plus audience. It will take time to determine the overall success. The reality is that 3AW, like 2GB cannot make money on the primary 65+ plus which all talk stations are historically top heavy with.

Talk radio is an extremely expensive format to maintain, let alone make any money. I have no illusions on the difficulty factor of achieving success.

It’s a mid-term investment in the future 3AW/9 Radio are attempting. The bottom line is for all those who hate it and switch off, the aspiration is that someone younger replaces them.

In a year or so, there should be some trends, forget gross shift numbers, they’re irrelevant. It’s the Demo’s, Cumes and TSL which determine success or failure.
Time will tell.

Nine radio in each city and as a network also desperately need a cohesive marketing campaign which ‘talks’ to their audience.

For me, the link below was one of most effective thematic talk radio marketing campaigns of the past 40 years. Nine radio could do worse than a complete update/refresh of this campaign to motivate TSL for AW, GB and BC.

They need to backup the changes with ongoing, targeted marketing on TV, Outdoor and Online/Print.

I wish them luck.

3AW breakfast will broadcast live aboard a paddle steamer on Murray River in Echuca next Monday (April 29).

Tom Malone and Greg Byrnes have been at 4BC’s Cannon Hill studios both Monday and Tuesday.

Without so much as an email to staff, their supposed great hope of breakfast talent announced after 8:30 am that they’d received a contract extension.

No end date given.

Hopefully this is only kicking the can down the road to the end of the calendar year and a proper news/talent and format can be reestablished in breakfast.
