i wonder if they objected to 2SM using it?
Thatâs the one thing they got right. Frequency pointers are meaningless in a streaming and cross platform age. ABCâs call to ditch them was the right one too.
Hrmm perhaps youâre right in terms of future proofing and moving into a more streaming heavy and digital radio era.
But I think the frequency still has its place.
It just depends where itâs being used - in a print/tv ad, it should have the âon âŚam/on DAB+/on the appâ stuff, on their own site it shouldnât matter.
I suppose maybe it saves 6PR a logo remake if they ever make it to FM.
The frequency really doesnât matter anymore. Digital radio and smart speakers. The station name is critical.
Nine Radio has announced Michael McLaren will be the new permanent host of 2GB weekend mornings and Luke Grant will be the new host of weekday overnights starting next week.
Wonder if that means Brooke Corte will be returning to Money News next week. Great that Luke lands a permanent gig though itâs a shame I wonât get to hear him into Melbourne anymore, heâs a very good broadcaster.
I suppose national weekend overnights will be heard out of Melbourne on Sundays with Richard Stansbury as has been the case for the last little while, with Saturday perhaps either by Clinton Maynard from Sydney or Pat Panetta from Melbourne.
I canât stand him on overnights weekend here in Melbourne. Far too Sydney centric and he whinges about politics over and over and over again.
Michael McLaren to host 2GB Weekend Mornings & Luke Grant steps into Overnights on 2GB and 4BC
Respected broadcasters Michael McLaren and Luke Grant will step into new roles at 2GB in 2023, with McLaren taking the helm of 2GB Weekend Mornings and Grant moving in to present Overnights across 2GB and 4BC.
Longtime listener favourite, Michael McLaren, started his radio career at 2GB in 2006 as a program producer. His on-air career kicked off in 2011, first hosting 2GBâs Weekend Overnight program before taking on Australia Overnights Monday-Friday in 2016.
On his new role as 2GB Weekend Mornings host, McLaren said: âI very much look forward to inheriting a special part of 2GBâs broadcasting schedule and providing our audience with a platform to debate, learn, laugh, reminisce and discuss. Whilst Iâll bring my own interests to the microphone, my years at 2GB have taught me that talk radio is at its best when the audience drives the agenda. And so, Weekends will be a reflection of the issues Sydney is talking and thinking about.â
âI also want to thank the thousands of people who were loyal to my Overnight program for so many years. We became like family and I hope many of you will be able to join me and many new listeners over the weekends ahead.â
Luke Grant has built a loyal following off the back of a broadcasting career stretching more than 30 years. Most recently, heâs enjoyed great success hosting the Money News program on 2GB, 3AW and 4BC.
Grant said: âIâve been at this institution with the best in the business for 13 years, and I relish every challenge and opportunity that comes my way. What I particularly love about Overnights is itâs where people turn for company, and Iâm thrilled to have the chance to give that to our 2GB and 4BC listeners, as well as the first live and local news coverage of the day.â
2GB Content Manager, Luke Davis said: âWeâre absolutely delighted to bring our listeners more of their favourite broadcasters in 2023.â
âMichael McLarenâs performance over the past decade has been outstanding, with listeners warming to his intelligence, quick wit and knack of breaking down complex issues. His ability to cover anything from the news of the day, to travel, sport, home improvement, cars, technology, health and nostalgia â with equal aplomb â makes him the perfect companion on Weekends.
âLuke Grant, meanwhile, has proven himself as one of Australiaâs most versatile and popular radio broadcasters. Over recent years, he has filled in for just about every program and format on the station, so weâre excited for Luke to make Overnights his own from 2023.â
Michael McLaren commences his role as host of 2GB Weekend Mornings this Sunday 15 January, and Overnights with Luke Grant will premiere on Monday 16 January.

because nothing says 2023 like a logo that looks like it was written in the 1940s
âŚfor people who listen who were probably mostly born in the 1940s, so itâs ânostalgiaâ at least I guess.
Good that theyâre consistent, not great they chose 2GBâs to be consistent with (itâs more jarring than anything, probably just as jarring as when 3AW got the Radio Active look under Southern Cross⌠it elicits more âhuh?â than anything).
Although given the Fairfax era logos were practically an afterthought post-Southern Cross era, I couldnât imagine Nine seeing them as too suitable either. If anything, it shows how little theyâre probably interested in throwing towards a logo of their own, and it wouldâve been interesting if 3AW still had its 90s logo [which it may barely be seen as a vague similarity, though not really]. Perhaps a little surprise that they didnât tack on the Nine dots to them, especially given theyâve used the Nine News sounder for long enough now.
Maybe itâs thinking too much like a TV company⌠you canât think too much about 25-54 demos when youâre running a talk radio network which skews well above it.

You can still listen to Luke via the 2GB app.
Brooke is excellent.
2GB website indicates that Clinton Maynard will be doing Weekend Overnights and Scott Haywood will be filling in for Brooke on Money News.
I hope itâs not permanent for Clinton.
He really deserves a lot more considering his experience.
Had 2UE and 2GB never merged, Clinton wouldâve been in a much bigger role by now.
He has done well to have survived the merger and still getting airtime.
Itâs pretty sad we only have one commercial talk radio network in this country. But thereâs just not the audience for a second competitive one.
I do wonder if thereâs space for a left leaning talk station, but ABC provides for that audience commercial free I guess.
I think Clinton is a very good presenter. He was a news reporter on channel seven many years ago before returning to 2UE after a year or so. It is interesting that he was kept during the merger as alot of other 2UE talent were let go. He was in a managerial role at the time of the merger if you read heâs LinkedIn.
IIRC Clinton was PD of 2UE at the time of merger.
It appears he took a demotion to stay or maybe he wanted a change essentially being the NSW political reporter.
Clinton seems to do most of his overnight shifts from his home so that is a saving in time and I would imagine he would continue his weekday commitments. I would imagine 2GB will continue using Luke Grant on fill -in shifts as they arise meaning more overnight shifts piped up from Melbourne. Just as long as we donât have to suffer Mike Williams. Clinton is a workaholic.
