Might be Seb Costello. They will do someone on the Nine payroll which I don’t believe Eddie is.

3AW supports Ovarian Cancer Australia

Ovarian Cancer Australia has been named the partner of choice in the 3AW Supports initiative for the month of June.

Launched last month, the program is designed to help drive awareness and raise funds for vital local and charitable organisations in Melbourne.

Each month, 3AW will champion a different Melbourne-based charity, spreading the word of critical community groups while helping to raise much needed funds to support their endeavours.

The program is part of a broader initiative from all of Nine’s talk radio stations and is underwritten by $1.6 million in airtime and production each year.

Ovarian cancer is Australia’s deadliest women’s cancer. Each day in Australia, five women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and three will die from the disease. Ovarian Cancer Australia’s vision is to save lives and ensure no woman with ovarian cancer walks alone. By making a donation, you can help Ovarian Cancer Australia support women diagnosed with ovarian cancer through awareness, advocacy, specialist nurses and practical support. To donate visit 3aw.com.au/supports.

Stephen Beers, 3AW Station Manager, said: “We are excited to launch 3AW Supports with such an amazing charity as Ovarian Cancer Australia. The support offered by the team at Ovarian Cancer Australia makes sure no one goes through their treatment and recovery alone.”

2GB supports Macquarie University Centre for MND Research

The Macquarie University Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research has been named the partner of choice in the 2GB Supports initiative for the month of June.

Launched last month, the program is designed to help drive awareness and raise funds for vital local and charitable organisations in Sydney.

Each month, 2GB will champion a different Sydney charity, spreading the word of critical community groups while helping to raise much needed funds to support their endeavours.

The program is part of a broader initiative from all of Nine’s talk radio stations and is underwritten by $1.6 million in airtime and production each year.

As the largest centre of its type in Australia, it has a single focus: to find the causes of this cruel disease and develop therapies to cure it. MND is a terminal, rapidly progressing neurological disease. Every year in Australia around 800 people are diagnosed. Each day, two people lose their lives – as their families stand by, powerless to help. Motor Neuron Disease is underfunded for the impact it causes, and every dollar counts in this fight. You can help support the vital work of the research centre by making a donation today at 2gb.com/supports.

Luke Davis, Content Manager for 2GB, said: “For many years, our 2GB broadcasters and listeners have raised funds and championed the case for further research into MND – an insidious disease that affects the lives of many Australians. We’re delighted to be able to support the incredible efforts of the team at the Macquarie University Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research as they work towards their vision of a world with no MND.”

I would suggest that maybe they will put Tom Elliott on mornings, and he will have some time off later

Nine launches round two of internship program

After the highly successful introduction of its radio internship program in January, Nine today announced that it has launched a second round of the initiative.

The internship program is designed to discover the next generation of radio professionals who will be afforded the opportunity to shape the future of Nine’s market-leading radio stations across Australia.

Successful candidates will have the chance to gain invaluable experience while learning from the best talent in the industry.

Importantly, the six-week internships are paid, and will be offered at each Nine Radio station: Sydney’s 2GB, Melbourne’s 3AW, Brisbane’s 4BC and 6PR in Perth.

During the program, interns are provided with hands-on training in radio producing, broadcasting, journalism and social media. Successful applicants will spend time with producers and on-air talent, and in Nine’s radio newsrooms, to learn how to produce engaging and entertaining programs, and fast and accurate news bulletins.

Tom Malone, Managing Director of Nine Radio, said: “We were blown away by the response to the launch of our internship program and the quality of talent we were able to unearth. Two of our interns have already been offered full-time work, while a further six applicants have been given casual employment. I’d encourage anyone with a passion for radio to apply for these positions.”

Applications close 15 June. To apply for the Nine Radio station in your city, click on the link below:

Radio Intern – 2GB
Radio Intern – 3AW
Radio Intern – 4BC
Radio Intern – 6PR

While it’s a good initiative i question the length of the appointment. 6 weeks is not long enough. It should be 6 months minimum even if they are offering “casual” employment to some of the candidates. Do things properly or not at all.

If they’ve taken on a dud then they don’t have to tolerate them as long.

Ask the appropriate questions during the interview process and that won’t be an issue.

that’s what probation periods are for, and any employment contract usually has an escape clause particularly for new hires.

Shane McInnes filled in for Ross Stevenson on 3AW breakfast today.

And for the 5:30 to 6:00am half hour Tony Moclair stayed on before Shane arrived at 6:00am. I didn’t catch the reason why Ross Stevenson was away.

I think 6 weeks is a good balance, especially given Nine Radio is paying them.

6 months is a big commitment for any workplace to take on an intern - especially when an applicant likely doesn’t have a academic institution behind who can vouch for them or anyone else who has skin in the game.

6 weeks is plenty enough to get a “feel” for things on both sides, as an intern and as an employer…any longer and chances are you’re exploiting the kid (likely) for cheap labour.

Seems the camera on AW is broken in one of the studios. It’s stuck on the wide shot. A shame because the guest in studio we are looking at the back of her head….

I find it interesting watching the 2GB feed that everyone other than Ray Hadley is in this tiny cramped studio where Ray is in a much bigger studio with a lot more space. Why is Ray so special?

Presenters do have their favourite studios. 2GB doesn’t have ‘cramped’ studios, plus it’s logistics. Any one who’s worked on-air knows it’s a nightmare using one main studio, especially with a talk format, but music also, doing a shift change in the news break is a painful experience.

Has been this way in Sydney at 2UE, 2UW and 2GB and other cap cities for 40-50 years of rotating studios at least.

They’re all afraid of him in case he loses it and calls them ‘f—ing idiots’ and tell John Brennan that they’ve lost his support altogether?

Nine’s radio stations No.1 for NRL and AFL coverage

Nine’s radio stations are the outright market leaders in Sydney and Melbourne for their coverage of NRL and AFL.

In the highly competitive sports broadcasting sector, last week’s GfK Survey 3 ratings results show that Sydney’s 2GB and Melbourne’s 3AW dominate across every timeslot.

In Sydney, The Continuous Call Team is clear Number 1 for NRL coverage:

  • Across all weekend shifts combined (Fri 7pm-11pm, Sat 1pm-10pm, Sun 1pm-7pm), 2GB commands a winning share of 9.2, ahead of ABC (5.8), Triple M (4.7) and SEN (0.4).
  • On Friday nights 2GB averages a 15.1 share, streaks in front of ABC (7.4), Triple M (3.7) and SEN (0.1).
  • On Saturdays 2GB averages an 8.2 share, leading ABC (6.4), Triple M (5.3) and SEN (0.4).
  • On Sundays 2GB averages a 9.0 share, well ahead of ABC (4.7), Triple M (4.2) and SEN (0.5).

In Melbourne, 3AW Football is a comprehensive timeslot winner across all shifts:

  • On Friday nights 3AW averages an 11.1 share, ahead of ABC (6.9), Triple M (6.2) and SEN (4.3).
  • On Saturday afternoons 3AW leads with a 7.9 share, in front of Triple M (6.9), ABC (3.7) and SEN (3.3).
  • On Saturday evenings 3AW averages a 9.8 share, well ahead of ABC (6.8), Triple M (4.9) and SEN (4.1).
  • On Sunday early afternoon (12pm-2pm) 3AW averages a 10.2 share, doubling its nearest sports competitor Triple M (5.1) and well ahead of ABC (4.9) and SEN (3.8).
  • On Sunday late afternoon (2pm-7pm) 3AW records a 7.8 share, in front of Triple M (6.8), ABC (4.2) and SEN (3.1).

Nine’s Head of Content, Greg Byrnes said, “These are stunning results right across our footy coverage. It’s pretty clear – if you’re not listening to our stations, or advertising on them – you’re missing out.”
