Nine Radio (Talk)

Haven’t checked in the CBD recently but will give it a try soon. I’m always on DAB+

Random Thought: If 2GB were to ever do the same as Brisbane & Melbourne and swap frequencies with 2UE, do you reckon they’d just leave the names and make 2UE 954 a talk station once again?

Given that 954AM has been longer as a talk station than a music station in recent decades, it would surely confuse listeners if we ever saw 2GB 954.

1116 wins hands down.

I think the talk station already being on a slightly lower frequency (and there likely not being much difference in reception quality between 873 and 954) would ensure that such a change won’t happen in Sydney.

Now if we had 2CH on 873 or 954 (with 2GB or 2UE on 1170), that would be a different story.

Yeah I haven’t compared these two specifically in the CBD before, but most AM is rather average there anyway.

882 has much better coverage across most of metro Brisbane, particularly to the south. 1116 suffers from a poor TX location in the north (at Nudgee) and due to Melbourne co-channeling can’t send enough signal south towards the city, so the southside in particular gets very poor reception particularly at night. 882 doesn’t seem to have these problems despite also co-channeling with a Victorian AM station (its transmitter is out east of the city at Wynnum West so can direct a fair bit more signal towards Brisbane city).

So it’s probably a net signal improvement overall for 4BC, but not to the extent that 3AW taking over 693 in Melbourne probably was. I guess now with 4BH rating fairly poorly they figured they had much less to lose than they might have doing the swap 15-odd years ago.

I guess it is closer to 2GB. In the old days remember FM 108 2GO? When it was 107.7. They use to that on the AM band too back in the days with just analog dials on radios.

Maybe they could rename 4BC to 2GB Channel 8 on your AM dial  . To be fair since Nine took over they have introduced local people back on 4BC.

I distinctly remember when 1107 went off air when 2UW went to FM (before SBS took over) , I could get a good signal of 4BC in Sydney on 1116. 873 has never been off air so not sure about 882.

Elise Elliot doing really well on AW this afternoon. Asking some great questions to callers who are impacted by the building industry shutdown. She’s a great interviewer.

Perhaps 4BC and 6PR could merge and become “The All New 882”. Could network programs between Brisbane and Perth.

Very funny. Didn’t end well for ‘the all new 882’ in Brisbane in the 90’s.

Strange to write a headline about yourself in third person, but I’m sure Rob will do well in this new role.

Fair… I wasn’t sure how to tackle the headline tbh.

@blackbox Congratulations on your new role at 4BC.

Can you let us in on any segment ideas, direction for the show etc.?

Phone lines down at 3AW because of the earthquake.

Neil Mitchell, Ross Stevenson, Dee Dee Dunleavy and many other 3AW presenters are speaking to Tony Jones on Mornings to describe what happened to them (3AW can make calls out but can’t take any call in, so they can ring up the presenters).

Neil is now on-air with Tony Jones taking phone calls from his home I presume. He was supposed to be on holiday from yesterday but 2 days later is back.

Early days but a base rundown is coming together. You know I love hot topics so we will definitely have a segment of that.

So I assume based off the line in that article about streaming shows being ahead of the times…. LIVE+ is no longer a thing for now?

That’s correct. I still believe in the concept and we got really close but the market is playing it safe, which is fair enough.

Never say never though.

Neil Mitchell has returned from leave early to host 3AW Mornings today.

So really the only day he hasn’t been on air was Tuesday (hosted Monday and chatted to Tony Jones on air on Wednesday and Thursday).

EDIT: Tony Jones returned at 9:00am.

… So Neil came back for 30mins only today?

Correct. I heard him interview Peter Costello, Nine Entertainment Chairman and former Treasurer of the Liberal Party, mostly to speak about John Elliott’s passing and reflect on his life.
