Is anyone going to listen to Deb Knight though?
I wonder what all of those Chris Smith supporters are thinking about all this? He never had a hope of keeping the afternoon slot.

Price was always an interesting one.
While successful at 3AW, when on his own and not spoon fed ratings success, he failed to build any audience at 2UE Breakfast, 2UE Mornings and at MTR.
As the Melbourne correspondent for John Stanleyâs afternoon show on 2UE Price would relentlessly put down Sydney. So it was hilarious when he was appointed to replace Jones on 2UE breakfast and the suddenly loved Sydney.
Sunday Herald Sun reports Rex Hunt will return to 3AW to host a fishing show on Friday nights. The one-hour show will air at 7pm from this Friday (December 20) until January 17.
Darren James turned this into some great radio at the time too:
I have no doubt Nine has a desire for the station to appeal to younger listeners but I agree this appointment wasnât made with âgenerational changeâ as the primary consideration. Knight is about five years older than Ben Fordham so she merely lowers the average age of presenters at the station.
Knight obviously has a strong desire to do radio. She was filling in on 2UE long before Macquarie owned it and her talent has been nurtured at 2GB with a view to adding her to the team when an opportunity arose. Removing Price after only six months in afternoons to accommodate Knight and her desire to do both radio and television is clearly designed to make the shit sandwich (losing second string newsreading duties) more palatable. Adding gender diversity and another Gen X voice to the 2GB line up is a bonus for Nine.
Could be more Erin Molan?
Itâs the new warehouse for the TV talent. Every network will want a station after what 9 will show them.
And on Deb, if she was on the marquee 6pm bulletin on weekends, the precursor to weekday presenting, of course itâs being dumped if sheâs no longer presenting.
As much as we may love radio, TV is more prestigious than radio.
Where else will they go? Theyâll be hired back in time when needed. Thereâs not huge numbers of suitably experienced operators to fill the airtime.
The Aus claims a lot of things about competitors which may or may not be true. This is likely, they would like to have a bet each way I reckon on sport in the shoulder hours of the drive time.
Also, suggestions for five hours of talk at night, very difficult, talk is a labour intensive, content hungry beast to feed, you need a lot of effort to cover five hours, even four is enough.
Murray Wilton for a couple of hours is good.
Correct and the lack of Caralis capitalising on this weakness.
Not at all, when newsrooms are downsized or programs axed in TV, competitor shows and newsrooms are always on edge because the competition justifies the need for the staff, if you have no competition, why bother? Radio feels this too as seen here and many others.
The fact that 25% of Brisbane commercial licenses have no Brisbane program content besides news is a big concern for the industry there.
AT least it wouldâve been a decision by 9 instead of the ego driven, âcrazy cutsâ by Singo, Tate, Lang et al with nowhere to be redeployed.
Smith is great for talking head panels and 9âs Today, Today Extra, Morning news, afternoon news, sports shows all have them.
He is good for Melb, but not for Sydney, Simple.
Great reminder why Melb doesnât need Syd content. Nor Bris or anywhere else outside of NSW. In fact, I reckon most of regional NSW and definitely the ACT audience doesnât like Sydney talk content either. Theyâre a special breed there.
Also, those couple of a thousand a weekend for Alan Pearsall and producer to be on air for a network program, looks churlish doesnât it?
Great memory. Curious that he would bag Sydney on a show for Sydney, what a lack of foresight.
Good correspondents donât do that.
I wonder if in house or a Crocmedia advertorial special?
@AustralianAerial - great archive by Simon Owens. Heâs a real talent and a lover of the medium.
I love Darren James, he knows how to fill in and do it well.
Great that Hinchy was called for a comment.
âI certainly wonât go to 2GB because I donât think they can fix that brand upâ, 25:20, a chance click through the audio file, great stuff.
Owensâ slab of audio shows all the changes in Melb radio too with AK trying again at talk to be the 2UE of Melb, sad it wasnât sustained.
At the end, Steve claims to not care much for heritage and old names of radio, very interesting, trying to look like heâs the man for today with no respect for yesterday, not good on talk where the audience and clients have very long memories, in fact their long term memory is probably better than remembering to turn off the stove or if theyâve bought enough groceries.
And good on her for doing it, beyond her 10 work, she couldâve kept grabbing newsreading slots all over the place until she found a long term place to settle but instead goes for the challenge and thatâs great for her. At least we know sheâll be keen to broadcast and improve the medium, hopefully the mgmt allow it.
This is a good move.
Thanks, great stuff!
Derryn Hinch: âSingo wouldnât spend any moneyâ. Not entirely correct. John Singleton spent a lot of money, throwing it at well-known names like Hinch and various ex-politicians. Maybe Singo should have advertised 2GB more extensively, but I donât think it would have helped with Hinch as he was never going to work on Sydney radio.
Hardly a new conceptâŚGTV9 had 3AK (now SEN), HSV7 had 3DB (now KIIS) and ATV0/10 had FoxFMâŚ
Indeed, however the TV ego takes over and management soon turf them to free up cash and focus on âcore activitiesâ
maybe not primary but thereâs a document floating around that uses those 2 words.
Well George did not close the door on coming back in 6 months if management want him back. Did not listen to the full show, will listen to the podcast.
There was nothing on the 2GB Twitter feed and nothing on the 2GB Facebook page.
Full show is here:
https://www.2gb.com/podcast/the-george-and-paul-full-show-podcast-15-12-2019/
Iâm sure 2GBâs two biggest draw-cards would be impressed by the existence of such a document considering the station wouldnât hold much value without them.
doubt they know, itâs with advertising groups.
And what did TCN9 QTQ9 ATN7 BTQ7 TEN10 and TVQ10 had for Radio Talent?
Used to be tied to 2GB as both owned by Fairfax
Used to be owned in common with 2UE
Mark Levy to host Wide World of Sports 6:00 - 7:00pm Monday to Thursday on 2GB and 4BC. Start date to be confirmed.
This is really interesting. Nine does not bring the âWide World of Sportsâ branding to MSR but uses 2GB. Does MSR have a long term future? Does it have a short term future?
I would love - and I mean love - to be in the meetings where Nine is talking about 2GB and MSRâs long term future. Singo really liked the idea of owning a radio station and its stars. It brought prestige. For Nine, both stations are media assets with cost centres and revenue generating ability. The ratings are out tomorrow. I am not sure that MSR is going to better its current 0.8% share. Can a media empire the size of Nine tolerate a 0.8%?
What is currently on 2GB from 6pm to 7pm? If itâs Money News, I guess Ross Greenwoodâs departure paves the way for a change.
