Nine Radio (Talk)

Explains plenty of why MRN never worry about drive in Brisbane nor Sydney for that matter.

Mini Fordo gets the bunny’s shift on GB, from the ‘high-calibre’ management that brings you MSR, the same who also overlook the glaring fact that drive, the PM version of their golden goose bfast shift and should be close to equally as lucrative for the station is their worst performing shift and has been for years prior to Fordo Jnr sitting in the chair.

Same in Brisbane where Hadley’s mate Braybrook returns survey after survey as the lowest rating shift on the station and sadly, the sole local shift is the least listened to yet no attention nor action from ‘management’.

With a dad like Ben’s, he’s of the opinion that the best fill in is a seat warmer that has the audience eagerly yearning for the usual personality to return.

Merrick would be in need of broadcasting work after finishing with SCA.

Of which most of the contribution to the Good Friday shift impressing would be due to Nat’s effort, a versatile broadcaster. Much the same way Tim Ross brought out the lustre in Merrick when they were paired at JJJ and Nova.

This is if 9 takes full control. This is a group of assets, 7 in total where only two are successful due to only four high paid staff with no development pipeline invested to continue the business model. Oh and three of the seven assets saddled with failed business models.

I’d take on more debt and acquire the better fitting SCA assets if I was at the Nine table.

Merrick’s ol mate, Tim Ross would have had Israel on instead and softened him up with questions covering some self aggrandising topics which deftly would lead Israel to painting himself into his own corner over it all. Some of his interviews on Mix by himself were well beyond his intended audience.

He might be or he might avoid it all and choose from the many other newsy topics often looked over by the rest of the GB line up who focus on such a narrow palette of topics day in, day out. Their topic rotation is akin to Jacko’s house of boredom approach to music scheduling on Nova.

I added a laughing emoticon to @littlegezzybear’s post for the audio of Friday night Merrick. Clicked into a few minutes in the middle to hear all thoughts confirmed. He still thinks he’s on FM.

Parrot should start every hour of his show with a goal horn before he launches into Gloria.

This is an insult to the Stanley Cup winning St Louis Blues I know but imagine a massive horn in the morning on Sydney radio.

Rex Hunt has revealed he suffered a nervous breakdown last year triggered by a battle with debilitating, unrelenting pain from a serious neck injury, forcing him to put his return to airwaves on hold. That’s why he hasn’t been hosting Footy Nightline on late nights until Friday, after the Sydney-Hawthorn game.

Residents in Redland Bay, an outer bayside suburb of Brisbane report poor reception of 4BC.

Progressively getting worse through winter I’m told.

I’d say they’re suffering adjacent or on channel interference with the weather conditions conductive for it.

4BC have also been running their day/night switching short too. On late and off early for the daytime power boost.

Haha.

All it needs is a “Breakfast with Alan Jones on 2GB 873” voiceover from Lofty before vocals from the song kick in! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yep, 18kw daytime and 8kw night time when I was there (bit more then licenced ;-)… Also around Oxley is shocking at night… My mate there gets SEN 1116 instead of 4BC at night… Damn crazy…
Used to always get calls in the engineering department from people reporting hearing sport and horse racing at night… I used to tell them to go buy a DAB radio…

Thanks @gordo92, the 8kW is interesting as to what points of the compass the main directions of power roll off to.

Yes, amazing how little you need to drive into the SW suburbs to line up the Melb axis and the Brisbane signal rolls off.

Hadley’s mate Braybrook over there in his beloved Centenary suburbs must be really out of coverage.

Agree, DAB is the solution. Fortunately at Redland Bay, it is just east enough for in building signal of DAB as it is beyond the obstruction of Mt Cotton.

Another reason why the Bris/GC DAB stand off needs fixing for a more sensible radiation pattern in Brisbane.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Chris Smith will be axed from the 2GB afternoon slot.

Thanks @Sifon

So it appears according to the Telegraph that Steve Price is moving to afternoons as compensation for him missing out on the morning slot as Hadley didn’t go to breakfast as Jones stayed at 2GB. Smith has been told he could be moving to nights. On the weekend he started clearing out his office.

The Telegraph article also states that Macquarie has stopped using AAP as a news source, saving $500,000 per year.

Interesting as Macquarie’s parent company Nine is a shareholder in AAP through its merger with Fairfax. It could mean less national news on Macquarie’s radio bulletins as it doesn’t have reporters in every state.

If Steve Price gets a promotion to the morning timeslot and Chris Smith leaves 2GB rather than moving to nights, I think it’d be great if Michael McLaren was given a promotion.

One wonders how Brian Wilshire (is his book still on-track? Haven’t heard anything about that in years) must feel about this news though, after he was effectively pushed out of the station/into retirement a few years back. Mind you it’s not an entirely bad thing that Brian Wilshire is no longer on Sydney radio, because we probably don’t need his conspiracy theories in the Trump/Brexit/post-truth era!

The decision by MRN to stop using AAP as a news source could possibly also be a hint that Nine might look to sell their interests in the Macquarie Radio Network at some point in the future?

Don’t know about the other cities but from my recollections of the bulletins heard in Sydney during recent years, Macquarie National News seems to be mostly focused on local news with some additions from their Canberra bureau and maybe occasional stories from the other cities post-Fairfax Radio merger.

If he wanted to work nights full-time, John Stanley would be a good replacement, I think. Luke Grant just says whatever he thinks Jones, Hadley and Smith would say and is a poor replacement in all shifts.

Agreed. Stankey has been a reliable journeyman for decades but could thrive if given a proper slot again. He’s a bit too much of a fence-sitter in my opinion but he has proven he is adaptable and works well with Rita Panahi.

A comment on Michael Smith’s website:

I have no time for Chris Smith as he is just an arrogant Alan Jones impersonator. But, he has been a success in afternoons, certainly more successful in share than Ben Fordham, and with a bigger audience than Steve Price. So dropping him does seem very weird.

Chris Smith is away for the next couple of weeks from Monday, on a listener cruise then on a few days leave. Whether he returns to afternoons when he gets back is not at all clear.

Seven News Sydney have picked up on the Chris Smith/Steve Price story (probably not overly surprising, when you consider who their news director is!):

This Michael smith character is also very dangerous. He believes in the most bizarre conspiracy theories. Not interested in his commentary.

Steve Price could be networked across Melbourne and Sydney with Denis Walter axed.

That crossed my mind earlier today. 3AW’s Nightline probably has a limited life now?
