Why will 3AW sack Denis Walter? In the most recent ratings survey, his show had 11.9% share, up 0.2 points from previous survey. It was second in the timeslot behind Gold.
I hope it’s just a rumour.
Lang has no fucking idea so wouldn’t shoeless me but Melbourne is not Sydney, Price would be awful in Melbourne.
He may be very familiar to Melbourne audiences thanks to his current networked Evenings show and he is a former program manager and Drive presenter for 3AW, but I can’t see Melbourne listeners being happy about having someone as beloved as Denis Walter removed from his shift. They barely got away with shafting Bruce and Phil so I’d expect lots of bad press and protests outside 3AW should they try to pull this shit.
This is Australian media for you folks - just because it works in Sydney doesn’t mean it should be done elsewhere.
Last time I checked, it was 3AW, 4BC and 2GB - not 2AW, 2BC and 2GB. Lang and Nine seem to forget that.
The same question can be asked about 2GB moving or sacking Chris Smith.
While I agree with your general sentiments, it probably has to be said that 2GB hasn’t been “100% Sydney” for some time now.
The only shift specifically for 2GB these days is probably Sydney Live with Ben Fordham? And even then, I’m surprised that MRN haven’t yet turned it into “Australia Live”!
This is an example of the stupidity of Macquarie. Ray Hadley is hopeless at hosting his country music show. He is stilted and dull. Overton and Rowe must-have been more than adequate replacements when they filled in last year, so now the replacement is someone worse than Hadley - his bodyguard:
Peter Overton & Jessica Rowe were probably better co-presenters of The Country Music Countdown because the husband & wife TV newsreader duo actually had a pleasant on-air personality which made for surprisingly enjoyable radio, unlike Ray Hadley.
Don’t give them any ideas. Relaying Parrot and Hadley into Brisbane is bad enough.
I’d prefer to hear an actual duck. ![]()
I’m surprised that 2GB Overnight and 3AW Australia Overnight still haven’t been merged. I thought it was going to happen when 2UE was obliterated, but it didn’t.
Give it some time. If they’re trying to syndicate day time shifts across Sydney and Melbourne, you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll syndicate overnight over Sydney and Melbourne.
Because in the end, cash and car spaces is all that matters in radio.
Indeed, Jason Morrison would be loving this.
As long as the boys wish to do it. Beyond that, any guess is possible.
He already is, the first two hours of his show already boring audiences away on AW.
Whats the point of 3aw calling it Australia Overnight when it does not broadcast into Sydney and Brisbane?
It makes sense given Steve’s popularity in Victoria.
I wonder if it’s time to network weekend mornings into Melbourne too.
If you’re going to syndicate Steve into Melbourne, leave him at nights. Have him at 9pm-midnight if you’re going to get rid of 3AW’s Nightline.
To me a good station is live and local from 5-6am to 6pm weekdays, preferably to 9pm, and at least 6am-12pm weekend mornings, or a total of 12 hours across a weekend. 2GB, 3AW, 4BC and 6PR should be doing this and not relaying outside of those hours.
He’s an ex Vic Pol detective. His claims are based on evidence. What specifically are you talking about?
One of the reasons why this is even being considered is Macquarie faced almost no pushback nor long-time ratings consequences after they decimated 4BC’s lineup in 2015 and essentially turned it into 4GB (aside from drive).
As such, they probably think/believe the same will happen if they do decide to network Price
For a major metropolitan market like Melbourne which currently only has a slightly smaller population than Sydney (and very well could become Australia’s most populated city in the future), I would’ve thought that a talk station should be running local programming for at least 18 hours each weekday and at least 12 on weekends.
The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Chris Smith has sought legal advice to fight the proposal to move him to nights. Radioinfo is claiming that Steve Price could move to afternoons while Smith is on leave. However Jones is also on leave from Monday with Price scheduled to fill-in.
Melbournians will not react well if they do too much to network 2GB especially in daytime shifts. Do they not remember MTR?
