With Dennis Cometti retiring from Triple M Perth, could 6PR’s Mark Readings move to across to replace him?

Readings previously called AFL on the then PMFM over 20 years ago.

I’m surprised Readings working for Nine owned 6PR and Seven West hasn’t generated the same amount of hype as when Basil Zempilas combined roles for both companies.

Nine Radio announces total audio offering

Australia’s leading radio network to drive expanded data offering, live streaming growth and podcasting . Nine Galaxy being developed to enable total audio buying .

Nine Radio has unveiled the next stage of its digital transformation, highlighting the importance of first-party data as it accelerates towards a total audio proposition for advertisers.

Speaking at the Nine 2022 Upfront presentation, Tom Malone, Nine’s Managing Director – Radio, confirmed that Nine Radio had implemented single sign-on (SSO) across its digital radio platforms, to complement its existing logged-in users and Nine’s wider data pool of 14 million people.

“The future of radio is total audio. A combination of live linear radio, live streaming and on-demand audio or podcasting. We have spent the last year understanding how our listeners are consuming our live and local content and what this means for advertisers across our digital platforms,” said Malone.

Over the past two years, Nine Radio has implemented a “live and local” strategy across its radio network creating “talk for a new generation”, resulting in year-on-year audience growth of 11 per cent and 14 per cent against P25-54.

“Nine Radio is successfully executing generational transformation to broaden our audience, extending the dominance of 2GB in Sydney and 3AW in Melbourne, while re-establishing 6PR in Perth and 4BC in Brisbane,” Malone said.

Every month, 15 per cent of Nine’s audience is streaming radio or consuming podcasts through their mobile phone, desktop or smart speaker. Last month 12 million streams and 600 million streaming minutes were consumed across Nine’s digital platform, creating an enormous opportunity for advertisers.

“The era of radio being defined by a dial with AM or FM is long gone,” said Malone. “The way we listen to radio is changing and Nine Radio is at the forefront with a unique product which is at the heart of each city our stations serve. Our broadcasters are now available anywhere, anytime, anyhow – through apps and smart speakers. The ubiquity and mobility of radio has never been stronger.

“With 600 million streaming minutes each month, podcast consumption growing and an engaged audio audience with a high disposable income, there has never been a bigger opportunity for brands to connect with the Super Consumer.”

Nine has already developed its leading technology platform Nine Galaxy for radio. It will soon roll out Galaxy for live streaming and podcast.

“The way listeners tune in is changing and so too is the way marketers and agencies buy our digital audiences,” Malone said. “Soon you’ll be able to use Nine Galaxy to buy total audio in the same way as you will buy total TV, automated and addressable.

“Live linear, live streaming and podcast, all delivered using Nine Galaxy and powered using Nine’s unique first-party data, giving brands an addressable audio platform at scale.

4BC and 4BH to finally announce on Monday a swap of frequencies.

First considered when 3AW and Magic swapped frequencies. SCB decided not to proceed in Brisbane.

When was this announced? Can’t find anything on the 4BC website or the social media pages.

Will be announced on Monday, in peak audience time, I guess after 8am.

it sort of made sense for 3AW/Magic because 693 was a much better signal across Melbourne compared to 1278. Is the signal between 1116 and 882 in Brisbane that much different to warrant a swap?

It isn’t the first time 4BH changed frequency, in 1976 its frequency changed from 1390 kHz to 880 kHz, then 882 kHz in 1978 when 9 kHz spacing came in.

Looks like Neil has postponed or cancelled his week off next week. He finished the show as normal today with “Talk to you Monday, 8:30”, whereas in previous times he was away he’d usually say something like “Tony Jones in for me next week.”

If Neil is on next week, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s to cover the roadmap announcement on Sunday more than anything else. Better to have a safe pair of hands.

It’s also AFL Grand Final week next week and Neil is a big Demons fan.

Obviously someone in Brisbane would know more, but unlike the situation when 3AW/Magic swapped, 882 is now essentially a clear channel with 3YB switching to FM, and the only other 882 being 6PR - which might indeed also switch to FM…

So less likelihood of interference would be a plus point I’d expect. Can’t imagine it’d be on the level of how bad 1278 is/was.

4BH is the only Brisbane commercial station on just 5kw ATM.

4BC’s location and signal isn’t that good but it does have a higher power output. It is 17kw during the day and 6,300 at night. If 882 went to 10kw it would probably give a better signal than 1116.

3RPH in Warrnambool is currently broadcasting on 882 kHz. When 3YB converted to FM, they swapped frequencies with 3RPH.

I wonder if 4BC would then adopt 6PR’s open line number of 133 882… I doubt it, but it’d be cool.

They should use the same number in every city. Such as 13 13 32 which is already used on 3AW and sometimes on 4BC for local shows

It also meant that 3AW was next to ABC and Magic was next to 3MP. While that wasn’t the primary reason, it was a nice coincidence.

Sunday Morning extending into the afternoon to cover the Roadmap on 3aw.
Currently branded as “Sunday Afternoon” - the newest program to 3aw. (a bit of tongue in cheek)

Weekend break with Grubby to follow the announcement
