Nine Olympic Coverage (Paris)

And 3AW of course.

Yes, it is. This is not a new arrangement.

All of Nine’s social media have been updated with new logos for the Olympics

Great news for people living in areas not covered by Nine’s radio stations.

But in hindsight, this deal should have happened earlier when the ABC first approached Nine.

I hope a similar agreement can happen for Los Angeles 2028.

Maybe the terms weren’t agreeable then.

Was there even a prior offer to the ABC?

It’s about time Nine realised that there are people out there who can’t listen to 2GB, 3AW, etc.

Any word if it will be available on the listen app?

ABC tried to negotiate a deal but Nine refused. Clearly things have changed since then.

I imagine the endtag of ABC’s broadcasts could go like this:

Paris 2024 Olympic Games: on ABC Local Radio and ABC Sport Digital. Produced in association with the Nine Network.

Wonder if the ABC will send their own commentators, or if they will just relay Nine’s coverage. Especially if they are only allowed to air coverage on platforms within areas that Nine doesn’t have a station, and if they are not allowed to broadcast their coverage on digital radio in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, or on the ABC Listen App and online nationally.

Based on the ABC press release, they’ll have their own commentary.

Under the deal, the ABC Local Radio network will bring its listeners the excitement from the Olympic Games using its own expert commentary.

I suspect they’ll send a handful of people over for the calls of the Australian specific stuff, and lean heavily on the BBC’s coverage for the rest.

According to the press release

So the ABC will only be able to use the world feed or Nine’s TV and radio commentary, to complement its own radio calls.

The answer will be yes.

I believe the ABC must acknowledge Nine on-air though (was mentioned in the joint media release)

So they aren’t allowed to have coverage on the listen app?

The first event involving Australia will be the Rugby Sevens with the Australian team kicking off proceedings on July 24 at 11:30 pm against Samoa, before playing again at 3:00 am against Kenya.

If they are successful in making the quarter-finals, they may clash with the closing stages of Matildas’ opening match with Germany at 3:00 am July 26th. It should be okay, but you never know with the beast of live sport! So I’d expect 9 to utilise both main channel and Gem for this.

Outside of news reporters being in Paris, I doubt two weeks out they’ll be getting access to Olympic venues or the IBC to call events.

It will either be a live relay of Nine’s coverage (since they have access to their radio and TV calls), or, they will use their own staff, but will be based in Australia, and will use Nine’s interviews with athletes, etc (remember in Rio the ABC did their coverage from an OB van outside Seven’s studios in Sydney).

Just caught a promo on ABC Radio Adelaide - said “ABC Sport - in association with the Nine Network”.

They have been heavily playing the promo since last night and also mentioning it in the radio news bulletins at times with some key wording being common inlcuding “in association with the Nine Network” and “sub-licenced”.

It will be on analogue radio from my understanding and will be in regional areas and some capitals where they don’t have the Nine radio stations - so all of Tasmania will get it with both Hobart and Northern Tasmania. They also said on Nightlife last night I think that they will have access to Nine’s TV and radio coverage and their commentary teams and interviews and they will have some ABC reporters there too.

Yep they will have access to all of Nine’s coverage - won’t be streamed online or on the listen app AFAIK, but will be on digital radio (except for Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane).
