Nine Olympic Coverage (Paris)

Think 9Gem hosts aren’t in Paris. Being in Paris is a better gig than being a studio host here.

Being a main channel host is better than being a host on a lower exposed/rating* m/c like 9Gem, full stop.

*although should be noted especially the first couple of nights of week 2 at Tokyo where final swimming was underway but track and field had started the latter on 7mate went huge and was neck-and-neck IIRC even beating main channel and higher share on one or more occasions. But in general…

Yes looks like 9Gem and Stan to be hosted from Australia with main coverage from Paris. Still better than what seven dished up in Rio and Tokyo.

Wonder how playout will end up, given NRL, NRLW, RU, news, time zones, etc have to be accommodated alongside two 24/7 Olympic broadcast feeds (9 and Gem).

Surely NRL even in Sydney goes off main channel during Olympics.

Guessing not just 9Go but even 9Life and/or Rush may need to be used, such as Perth market on Friday and Saturday early evenings.

There were pretty significant and valid reasons, at least for the most part and certainly the latter games for this…

A little bit of good news for Nine: rugby union doesn’t clash with the Olympics until August 10 (second last day of the Games) when Australia host South Africa in Brisbane in the opening match of the Rugby Championship.

Does anyone know who is actually going to be commentating the opening and closing ceremonies?

From memory, Eddie McGuire and Leila McKinnon got those coveted gigs for London 2012.

But I’d be very surprised, at least if it were both, still doing them again for Paris 2024. I mean they’re legacy network personalities, not exactly the most relevant or known to younger generations of Nine viewers today not to come across as harsh, especially your lucrative 16-39 male viewers, there’s been plenty of new talent join Wwos since then.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Roz Kelly gets a tap for it, especially as she’s not listed as a session host, which we’ve said here we’re surprised with (Johanna Griggs regularly was involved in them and for Rio 2016 she also did not host a session but did these ceremonies plus helmed the Paralympics with Lawrence Mooney on 7Two). Maybe Gerard Whateley and James Bracey, two major players for Nine’s Olympics, like Bruce McAvaney and Hamish McLachlan, who were both involved with Seven’s recent Opening and Closing Ceremonies IIRC.

Andy Raymond will call the boxing from Sydney studios off the tv alongside Peter Psaltis calling the shooting from Sydney… we are now getting a picture of what is being called from Paris and what is being called from Sydney. Not ideal but not as bad a the past two games.

I wonder where Matt Hill will call the rowing from??

There’s a few questions to be answered from Nine’s coverage.

Bit unfair to include Tokyo when they were actively discouraged from sending a large team

Yeah COVID for Tokyo (also delayed a year) and didn’t Rio have its own concerns over both security and another virus?

Zika maybe?

Realistically though, the closest a lot of the commentators get to the action is in the IBC and it’s been that way for a while now. If you’ve going to go all the way to Paris to call from the IBC, I can see why some opt to do it from their home market.

i can understand but theres something about being on the ground in the excitement, even if your just in the IBC

Nine and ABC partner to deliver radio coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 to more Australians

Nine has today confirmed a sub-licensing agreement that will allow the ABC Local Radio network to broadcast the 2024 Paris Olympic Games to listeners on 891 ABC Adelaide, 105.7 ABC Darwin, 936 ABC Hobart, 666 ABC Canberra and DAB+ channels in those markets, as well as local ABC radio stations across regional, rural and remote Australia.

As Australia’s Home of the Olympics and Paralympics, Nine will deliver unparalleled coverage of the 2024 Summer Games across its television, audio, and publishing platforms, including exclusive commentary and coverage of every moment of action on its talk radio stations and streaming platforms Sydney’s 2GB, Melbourne’s 3AW, Brisbane’s 4BC and Perth’s 6PR.

The deal between Nine and the ABC will extend the radio coverage (AM/FM and DAB+) of the Olympic Games to ensure every Australian can access live broadcasts of our most loved athletes competing on the world stage, and help unite the country around these spectacular sporting moments.

Under the deal, the ABC Local Radio network will bring its listeners the excitement from the Olympic Games using its own expert commentary.

Coverage will include every Australian gold medal chance, Opening, Closing and Victory Ceremonies; highlights programs, updates of key events, and general replay coverage; and comprehensive coverage during regularly scheduled news programming. In addition, Nine will provide ABC Local Radio with access to its exclusive live, on the ground television and radio commentary and interviews, as well as those of the IOC.

All broadcast coverage by the ABC will acknowledge Nine as the Home of the Olympics during licensed broadcasts, as well as in any promotional material.

Managing Director of Nine Radio, Tom Malone said: “Nine’s talk radio stations have a long history of collaborating with the ABC for Olympic broadcasts. This agreement augments our distribution and commercial strategy in our local markets, ensuring all Australians can access the Olympic Games through their local ABC radio station in regional, rural and remote areas.”

ABC Managing Director, David Anderson said: “The spirit of the Olympic Games is about uniting and inspiring people, and I am delighted to provide audiences with access to such an important global event. Regional, rural and remote areas of Australia are home to many past, present and aspiring Australian athletes, and all should have the opportunity to support and be inspired by those at the Olympic Games.

“I look forward to working with Nine to bring the excitement of the games to audiences around the country.”

Great outcome for those outside of Nine’s radio markets and with using ABC’s own commentary team.

ABC announcement is identical.

Amazing I really thought a deal could be reached, but great result, be interesting for the commentary of the ABC and who will they choose though.

It’s only a sub-licencing agreement to the areas that don’t receive 2GB, 4BC or 6PR
