Mediaweek reported last week that Mark Stevens had been appointed managing director of Zero Digital Sports, which manages websites Zero Tackle, Zero Hanger and AllSprt.
There are redundancies across most divisions at Nine today including Sydney newsroom.
From SMH
The redundancies only apply to the streaming and broadcast division. While 50 positions are being eliminated, some new roles are being created, which means the number of departures may be smaller.
A Nine spokesperson said the cuts were designed to reduce duplication and drive greater collaboration across Stan, Channel 9 and 9Now, while also working to offset a tough advertising market.
âOur primary focus during the consultation is supporting these team members through access to our employee wellbeing provider, as well as exploring redeployment opportunities within the broader Nine Group,â the spokesperson said.
At the companyâs annual general meeting on Friday, Nine said it planned to cut an extra $10 million in costs as a response to advertising market conditions.
EDIT: Correction regarding Bronte Gildea.
Thatâs an incredibly big loss for Nine. Heâs been with the network for over 25 years. Wow.
The story says Uptin is being replaced by Gildea, not that she has been made redundant.
He is believed to be replaced on the sports desk by Bronte Gildea, who has been filling in on recent bulletins and is also the partner of Brisbane Broncos star Patrick Carrigan.
Some selected quotes
Senior Nine News Queensland sports reporter Jonathan Uptin is understood to be among those departing, with his contract not renewed as part of the networkâs latest cost-cutting measures.
He is believed to be replaced on the sports desk by Bronte Gildea, who has been filling in on recent bulletins and is also the partner of Brisbane Broncos star Patrick Carrigan.
Supervising Producer of Presentation and Promotion at Nine News Queensland, Leon Cull, was reportedly informed of his redundancy at the weekend and instructed not to return to work on Monday.
Operations co-ordinator Jessica Llewelyn was also among those affected, while at least one other Brisbane-based employee â believed to be in a support role â is awaiting confirmation of their positionâs future.
10/11/2025 Sophie Walsh presenting weather in Sydney tonight.
Kate Collins missing in action tonight. Not to read much into it but maybe sheâs gone too?
Very shocked by this. Didnât expect Adelaide to be effected like this, especially when they want to make inroads into 7 News
But I mean Kateâs been there a while and had very little impact in the grand scheme. Not worth their investment I guess.
Collins and Brenton Ragless did well to last just over a decade against the more dominant mob on Seven, which in that time period had three different presenter line-ups: Jane Doyle/John Riddell (2005-19); Doyle solo (2020-22) and Will Goodings/Rosanna Mangiarelli (since 2023).
This means Michael Thomson (Perth since January 2018) is now the second-longest incumbent serving 6:00pm presenter of the five major markets, after Peter Overton who has been the Sydney anchor since January 2009; while Melissa Downes (in Brisbane) also began in January 2009, sheâs had three different co-presenting partners (Bruce Paige â Andrew Lofthouse â Joel Dry) and Brenton Ragless joined Collins in 2014 (prior to that it was Collins solo from 2011).
Hopefully they donât axed Georgie or Melissa Downes or Peter Hitchner
Georgie might be worried if the rumours are true about her being paid $600k a year to read the news 2 nights a week (most weeks).
If they did axe someone from the Adelaide team I wouldâve thought it wouldâve been Brenton. Sucks to be Kate though given that sheâs the familiar link with Nine Adelaide all along.
This will put them back another 5-10 years behind Seven with Rosanna and Will.
Redundancies mask them wanting to wait for Jonathanâs contract to end. Pete Hitchenerâs fate was sealed when he was moved to weekends. Letâs see.
I am very surprised about Kate though.
100% ! Iâm shocked. I really liked Kate.
Very shocked by the decision to axe Kate. What a shame.
I think itâs now fair to say that Livinia Nixon was axed as part of these cost cutting measures too.
TV Blackbox is saying that the Sydney newsroom is the hardest hit. James Bracey is about the only prominent person from WWOS. Maybe Amber and Belinda?
