AFL or NRL?
And just as a ‘guest’ (talking about a story in particular) or actually regularly as a panellist?

Nine may use him to report on Melbourne Storm news.
Yeah but not as a dedicated Storm guy. He does most other sports though (cricket, tennis, etc.) so he might not need to do any AFL.
Thursday 17 March -
Emma Lawrence presented sport in Sydney.
Busy week for Hitch then with Moomba, 5 days of news and one night of late news.
I wonder why?
The Courier Mail is reporting that former Nine Gold Coast and Ten Network newsreader Rob Readings has died after a long battle with illness.
Rest in peace.
Very sad, i thought he was probably the best non metro newsreader I’ve ever seen. I thought he was great on Nine Gold Coast News with Leila on weather back in the late 90s when i lived up there.
I met him in the elevator once at 50 Cavill Ave as my office was in the same building then too.
Possibly best remembered in Brisbane for presenting sport for TVQ 0 and later reading the main bulletin.
That’s really sad. I enjoyed watching him on the GC News.
Report from Nine
Queensland readers can tune into 9News at 6pm for more coverage of Rob Readings’ death.
I wonder why Peter Hitchener doesn’t present election nights, compared to the news other anchors? Instead of him it is usually Tony Jones and Alicia Loxley.
Because Tony and Alicia are better than Hitch at handling unscripted, rolling election coverage. Let’s also not forget that Hitch is now in his 70s.
Hitch is the last of a generation of newsreaders that first and foremost, present the news. Granted, he’s one of the best Australia has, but Alicia (and I assume Tony?) is first and foremost a journo who has risen to the rank of newsreader, which makes them better for rolling coverage.
Hitch worked in radio and as a field reporter, discounting him merely as a ‘reader’ like Henderson is a fallacy.
Oh without a doubt he has talent as a reporter. But that’s not to say that his main role now is as a newsreader, not a rolling news journo.
I guess because Hitch has been reading since it was common for 6pm anchors to only front that bulletin and have journos front rolling coverage, this is where the thinking comes from.
As far as I know (and I’m not from Sydney so I’m only basing this on posts here) Brian Henderson only did 6pm, and presenters like Waley would do breaking news/rolling coverage.
Hitch probably isn’t up to the long rolling coverage that requires Q&As and adlibbing. He’s just from a different era.
