Nine News Local

ohh so Gavin Morris is using a Plasma, thats why I thought the colors were a bit off. I reckon a Green Screen would look better than that.

Coming up after the break: a story we ran earlier in the bulletin!

That honestly looks like it was part of the old Nine News Sydney set.

Nothing in that image looks like the old Sydney set?

That’s not how the world works. [quote=ā€œprimetime_tv, post:1044, topic:2086, full:trueā€]
Why don’t we apply the same thought to the reverse then? I bet people in Sydney can’t wait to see a 2 minute story about the weather in Canberra and Wagga!

The wooden frame could of been removed from the screen!

Here’s an opening mock with headlines and OTS:

Love that OTS.

Good … I actually prefer the QTQ Brisbane style music. Sounds awesome

Wow! I really like how the OTS appears over the top of the local image. That’s fantastic! Wish they would adopt that

Why? Canberra is the nations capital. I’m sure people in Sydney care…

Meanwhile a new presenter in Queensland for the news updates (at least Sunshine Coast market).

NBN has been working successfully with the format for over 20 years. It’s hard to argue it’s not a solid format to follow.

Most of the arguements in this thread seem to be about newsworthiness. There seem to be some Sydneysiders commenting that anything that happens in Sydney is automatically bigger news compared to the exact same event happening elsewhere. I didn’t grow up in Sydney, nor do I live there now, so I find this a difficult arguement to agree with. However, I did live and work in Sydney for 4 years - and during that time I was much more interested in the Sydney weather stories and local bus explosions that I am now or was before.

Proximity plays a huge part in newsworthiness, but it’s not the only factor. Newsworthiness is a complex part of journalism and those who have studied and work as a journalist spend years honing their news sense.

Forgive me if I’m teaching everyone to suck eggs, but the format NBN has developed works because the biggest stories of the day (say, top three) should be the most interesting stories to ALL viewers. The competitive edge a composite bulletin has is that it isn’t stuck covering a local car crash as a top story on the day of President Trump’s inauguration.

The Nine News NSW framework should only carry stories that matter to all viewers, in a way that reflects the viewer’s proximity to Sydney. Otherwise, there is no point having a composite bulletin and they should do a Gold Coast style Nine Local 30 minute bulletin.

The local windows can then pick up weather stories from Sydney if, for example, viewers in Wollongong are likely to be interested.

It is difficult for a news editor in Willoughby to determine if a viewer in Jindabyne cares about a driveway caving in in Sydney - however one could safely presume it’s not worthy of a top 3 considering it’s a picture story and there were no injuries.

Those who remember (or indeed worked on) Canberra’s most successful news hour programme are probably best placed to comment on the newsworthiness of parochial Sydney stories in the Canberra region. Indeed, back at the time, viewers praised Capital Eyewitness News for it’s world view.

In the format that I proposed the big stories of the day would be included in the first segment in addition to local news. So on days when there is a Presidential inauguration that can be the lead story, but on days where there is a big local story, that can start the bulletin rather than for example a national political story.

Keep it :100:

That’s oddly the skill Nine need for these reports - finding any obscure way to tie stories they cover back to the local market.

You know the vast majority of the 350,000 people in the central west viewing area live in cities with 40,000 people or more and large towns. Silos and wheat farms?

I think the issue is the EP, News director or whoever it is who is responsible for determining the rundown of the bulletin lives and works in Sydney. So they are going to naturally have a sydney centric view of the world.

Fast forward a few weeks and this will not be 9 News Canberra - it will essentially be 9 News SNSW/ACT going out to the southern half of NSW and inland to Orange.

The news director or EP needs to live outside of Sydney. Probably in Canberra. But be location neutral. And they neee to make sure they are very connected with all regions and issues.

But the reality is is that the 10 staff putting the bulletin together are all in Sydney. So you can’t oversee a team or staff in SYD from CBR

So, the news director will
Likely stay in sydney - but they need to be traveling to the areas weekly, reading local newspapers online and try and put on a non sydney Centric hat every day at work.

WIN did something similar for their Central West opener back in the 90s.

Or maybe a ground level shot of something like the Parkes Telescope?

Let’s not use WIN in the 90s for inspiration

I like the telescope idea but most people in the viewing area live in medium sized cities such as orange dubbo and Bathurst. I think an urban setting shot of a city is more relatable to people’s daily lives than a telescope

Perhaps they could have a shot for each city and switch it out once a week.
