As TV.Cynic said above, it’s as simple as manually changing your aperture to get your whole image in focus. That’s what many VJ’s do to ensure they are in focus if they are in front of the camera (if auto focus is not an option due to the environment).
I can definitely concur. It is a juggling act not only writing scripts and sourcing talent - but also filming vision and in some cases, editing it as well - all with a pressure of a deadline.
People need to cut us some slack sometimes. Variety of circumstances that can happen - sometimes the equipment doesn’t want to play well with you, sometimes you spot the mistake during editing and it’s close to deadline. For me, my rule of thumb is if you can reshoot a PTC, do it - but only if it’s possible. As long as it’s not blaringly bad, of course.
All things considered Archie, great work. Keep it up. Sad your show isn’t doing live crosses anymore. In comparison to your old bulletin, plus the current VIC and QLD, there’s hardly ever a live cross for NSW.
mate, just stop.
Closing the aperture to give a longer hyperfocal distance works fine on a still camera where the shutter speed can be adjusted to allow extra light through, however as video is normally shot at 25fps, closing down the aperture would mean that the overall exposure of the picture would be darkened.
Archie if you continue as a VJ, I have a suggestion that may help when setting up a PTC.
Set up a light or mic. stand where you’re going to be standing. Frame the shot using the stand as a “stand in” for you. Maybe put a ball or cap on the stand, zoom in, focus on the ball/cap, then re-frame the shot.
Hit record, grab your microphone and go to the PTC position, drop the stand or push it out of shot then do your PTC.
Good luck in your career mate.
you totally misunderstand my point, i work with Vj’s all the time, you still need a camera op to help build your skills, its like when i do an interview or simsat for journos, i lean on them for skills. you are being naive to think that you dont need each other.
One of my golden rules of being a journo - “be nice to your cammo!” It’s definitely a team effort. I wouldn’t have been a somewhat decent VJ if it wasn’t for the training and advice I got from cammos I’ve worked with in the field.
Some news teams have a Journo and a Cameraman, others simply don’t (for a variety of reasons), I never said they didn’t need each other, but particularly in regional areas, budgets are tight and networks look for efficiencies
yep and quality suffers for it. Been in this job for 15 years, i will always advocate for 2 person crews for a variety reasons, quality and safety are just 2. Im happy that you are a VJ but we should be pushing for better crewing all the time. Its not an attack on you or your ability.
Jack Hahn on the 6 News livestream (that morphed into a comedy show) on Saturday afternoon said that he would be working in North Sydney on Sunday. Maybe he is staying with Nine?
