Nine News Local VIC promo was just played on 9Go in NSW
They were in another studio briefly and may also use it if ACA need to pre-record an interview etc -
ACA set bulletins;
Other studio;
They have been using the ACA set this week. An easy way to tell is the brightness of the screen.
Nine News Local was back on the main channel after a 2-week break where it was bumped to 9Go! due to Nineâs tennis commitments. Unfortunately the viewers didnât return with the audience way down on its usual numbers at least for the first night.
I find a good yard stick to measure the bulletinâs performance is to compare it to WIN News (despite the different timeslot and markets). Generally the two bulletins will attract roughly a similar audience. Even as the audience fluctuates across days and different weeks, they are usually quite close. However, on Monday Nine SCâs local news was 45% lower than WINâs 6pm offering. Will have to wait to see if viewers rediscover the bulletin.
What an absolutely awful strategy. After already messing with the âlocalâ news format at 6 then 5.30 multiple times - they then bump it onto a secondary channel that gets 1/5th of the audience with little to no promotion - then move it back, again with little to no promotion.
Hard to know if this was an SCA or Nine move - and what they were thinking
I reckon it mightâve been an SCA move. If NEC owned these station(s), I reckon they probably wouldâve done what Nine Gold Coast did: News at 5.30pm on Nine SD while Nine HD viewers continue to get the tennis until 6pm news time.
it was only moved for the week due to the tennis
Still no good news in the ratings numbers. Monday was the high point for the 5.30 local news (as is often the case for most news services) and it was down about 10% on Tuesday and Wednesday. Using the WIN News yard stick again, it was 40% below that yesterday; so still a lot of rebuilding to do.
If they branded it as âNine News Statewideâ I think it would have legs. After all, SC has been doing that in Tasmania for 25 years.
Considering the potential audience would be around 1.5 million in NSW, perhaps they could justify an actual set and live weather! Maybe even a second camera, but donât want to push it.
Well itâs not local thats for sure. Maybe they brand it local for the sake of having news quotas for local news?
The name of the programme doesnât impact achieving local content quotas. Local content is down to the nature and the number of minutes thereof. 9GC, 9Darwin, NBN and 7Tas all produce local news, but they donât patronise viewers in naming it as such.
In the case of 9 Local, Nineâs approach is down to apathy and a complete disinterest in the programme. They treat it with contempt and actually make no attempt to attract viewers. The bulletin is a perfunctory, legal and contractual web-cast standard obligation. Not television.
SCA/Nine do absolutely nothing to market or promote the bulletins.
All 3 of them go out to markets of 1.3 million plus - the same size as Adelaide. Yet look at the marketing might 9 and ÂŁ put behind local news in that market, compared to QLD, VIC and SNSW. Nada
They donât even have an on staff promo producer - Adelaide probably has 2
Nine news local doesnât seem to have 1 promo producer between the 3 bulletins
Marketing of the bulletins is probably in SCAs hands. This is the problem with teaming up with someone who doesnât know how to promote News and even their own shows that well.
Daily topical news promo is always generated from within the news department
Brand / image type spots done by the network promo team
Of which SCA does not have
So Nine needs to be doing it
SCA will probably charge Nine for Sales inventory to air them as itâll take up space from national/local advertisers.
You think something like that would be in the affiliate agreement but probably couldnât work out if Nine or SCA would pay for a Promo producer.
That wouldnât be the case. Promo time is allocated separately to ad revenue minutes. And really whenever Nine runs Nine News promos, SCA should be running local 530 promos
I think dual 5.30pm/6pm updates would be a good idea.
Iâm sure they still count in the code as ânon-content matterâ unless there is no date/time on them.
⌠unless that has changed in the last ten years.
Channel 9 produces the promotional content for the bulletins then SCA puts it to air. As apart of the affiliation agreement, Nine has a certain amount of advertising hours allocated each month on Nine SCA + Radio. This can be used for network show promos, news etc.
The radio promos for the bulletin is decent on Triple M and Hit in QLD but TV not so much.
Yes and no. Promos for the bulletin air frequently but moving the bulletin to 9Go during Aus Open has shot down a large amount of progress on building an audience. The bulletin couldâve easily aired on the main channel but they went against it.
More promos should be produced now to repair the loss of ratings due to the channel switch. The online presence needs improving as-well.
The promo currently airing is the same one from Nine Local launch. Should be updated.
Why? Nine News Local runs off the tongue easier when presenting.
New consistent sets should be rolled out across the 3 markets - even the set currently used in Regional NSW is fine and allows for different style of presentation.
Iâd imagined âstatewideâ could mean the bulletins be titled with the state name, e.g. Nine News Victoria, which seems fine.
