Nine News Local

I clearly stated above “across the 5-city metro markets and all regional markets” but I’ll say it again, Seven News won the metro ratings and the regional ratings and is Australia’s number one news. We can’t publish the regional ratings though. Seven included some information on this in their end of year report

“Across 2016, more Australians watched Seven News. Seven News is now Australia’s number one at 6:00pm, leading Nine News across the five major metropolitan markets and across all metropolitan and regional markets.”

Nine’s claim from its 2016 ratings report “Nine’s east coast bulletins are No. 1.”

I think we have gone off topic enough now.

OK, fair enough. The “we can’t publish” is odd & frustrating, but explains it.
Thanks for clarifying.

Seven News/Prime 7 News beats NBN News in Nth NSW? I seriously doubt that.

No Prime didn’t beat NBN but because Seven own the regional stations in Queensland - that is how Seven can claim regional numbers

(I hate to keep this tangent going but can’t leave that alone…)
Ownership shouldn’t be the measure; (based on above) I’d think it should be total viewers 18:00 - 19:00 for the networks & affiliates, regardless of ownership or name of the news programmes airing in that window, but even that time window is artificial:
It excludes Ten Eyewitness News at 17:00, disregards the other news programming during the day/night, etc.
Maybe it (for the purpose of who’s news is Australia’s most watched) should be viewers multiplied by the hours of a particular channel/network/affiliate’s news programming watched per day or week, or over the entire year?

Well that’s just the thing, because affiliates are just that, affiliates. They are not owned and operated by the big networks. And because OzTAM which collect and publish the metro ratings are a seperate entity to RegionalTAM. Put all that aside, Seven News won both the metro numbers as well as Regional Queensland therefore giving them a national result. It doesn’t seem fair, but that’s just how it operates.

No it isn’t

Ownership has nothing to do with it. Just the same as ratings are added together for other programs like MKR, regarless of ownership, they are added as best they can be for state based or equivalent bulletins. So “national” Nine News is coded as “National News” in the regional ratings and includes NBN News and state based Nine News shown on SCT and WIN. Seven News on GWN 7 counts as Seven News and for Regional QLD - Seven News at 6.30 counts as Seven News.

Well then it’s a matter of interpretation.
People (Seven or others) can’t claim that Nine (or another company) are lying when saying “Australia’s number 1” if the fair & relative numbers don’t back that up (I don’t know if they do/don’t).
Did & would people have still excluded Channel 9 Perth & Adelaide numbers from the 5-cities metro just because they (at the time) weren’t owned by Nine Entertainment Co, so automatically Seven would win? Ridiculous.
Affiliate or not doesn’t matter.
Total viewers in the country matters (as Seven’s Sunrise vs Today lawsuit confirmed), and it’s what advertisers care about (where are the viewers?).

Ok well you learn something new everyday. I was just under that impression hence why there’s different ratings (1 set for regional and 1 set for metro). And it’s no wonder why I got confused. But clearly Seven’s regional partners contributed (overall) for Seven being able to claim Australia’s number one news.

Maybe that was a reason why Nine News (when it was number one in the metros recently) they weren’t claiming to be Australia’s number one news.

This is all puzzling me now lol. Urghh anyways better get back on topic here

Wow! I was not expecting these new bulletins to use the same new set designs.
These regional news bulletins are going to look great!!!

I don’t think they will be. I think they might just be using the Today set.

So what about Victoria and Queensland then?

And that is different from any other promo how? They voice grabs from reporters in promos are almost always fake. They’re told to say something dramatic.

There are many different ways for each 7 NEWS and 9 NEWS to claim to be “number one” - you could go around all day.

Are we comparing just the 6pm news? Or the output of the news division? And then what exactly does #1 mean - as you could be #1 at a number of things. “Most watched” would be a clearer claim.

For example in the US CBS does not claim to be the #1 network - they claim to be the “most watched” network - which no one can dispute. They are. Also in the US - when ABC or NBC claims to be “America’s most watched news” - they are not only talking about the 63pm broadcast - but the news output as a whole.

But i don’t think Australia gets that into it. We are a little more simple in our ratings.

But if we are talking evening news at 6, I think it’s a bit of a stretch to include “Southern Cross News Tasmania” in Tasmania under the 7 NEWS banner, likewise it’s a bit of a stretch to include “Prime7 News Wagga” under the 7 NEWS banner.

If you want to talk 6pm, and how many people watch a news service branded and operated as 7 NEWS V how many people watch a news service operated and branded as 9 NEWS - I think that is up for debate.

Do you include Darwin? Do you include the Godl Coast’s 2 530 newscasts? Do you include NBN - which is owned by Nine, on Channel 9 - but still branded as NBN News. Do you include the 7 local “7 NEWS” services in queensland which are all local news only, not hybrid style?

If Prime7 took the “Prime” out of the title, do you suddenly;y include them even though they re also local news only?

Soon, “7 NEWS” will have broadcasts to

Top 5 cities
Gold Coast
Regional QLD (1.8 million)

“9 NEWS”

Will have broadcasts to
Tope 5 cities
Gold Coast
Darwin
Regional QLD 1.8m
SNSW 1.4m
VIC 1.1 m

That will very quickly make 9 NEWS the most watched news in Australia.

If NBN rebrands to 9 NEWS - that is another 2.2 million market

Great launch promo BTW - but obviously done by the people who do Sydney’s new promos.

Will be interesting to see how they handle ongoing daily and topical promos

9 NEWS CANBERRA LAUNCH PROMO

My only thing is - the use of Parliament house everywhere as the backdrop - I feel - and perhaps I am alone - that when national news is talking about Canberra it’s almost ALWAYS politics - so Parliament House makes sense.

But for a local audience, that is just one building in their city. Does it make sense to use the national parliament building where national laws are made for the whole country, for a local news service that covers all sorts of news?

I get it - it’s a national landmark. It is Canberra’s Opera House. But Sydney doesn’t only use the Opera House or State Parliament as backdrop - they use the city - the skyline. I kind of think 9 should be doing the same with Canberra - using a city skyline image, at least sometimes - rather than just Parliament House.

Parliament House says national politics, not so much local news service

Agree, life in Canberra for Canberrans happens far away from Parliament House and the triangle.

The ABC uses Civic and Black Mountain for their background loop which makes much more sense.

So considering this service looks to be well funded and professional I’m guessing it’s Nine funding it all and SCA have very little to do with it editorially at least.

Does seem to be paving the way though for a Nine takeover.

For which we can be thankful. The current news updates are pathetic.

SCA basically have nothing to do with it.

They seem seem
To have zero interest in producing any kind of television or indeed almost being in the TV business.

They literally do
Nothing!
