There are many different ways for each 7 NEWS and 9 NEWS to claim to be “number one” - you could go around all day.
Are we comparing just the 6pm news? Or the output of the news division? And then what exactly does #1 mean - as you could be #1 at a number of things. “Most watched” would be a clearer claim.
For example in the US CBS does not claim to be the #1 network - they claim to be the “most watched” network - which no one can dispute. They are. Also in the US - when ABC or NBC claims to be “America’s most watched news” - they are not only talking about the 63pm broadcast - but the news output as a whole.
But i don’t think Australia gets that into it. We are a little more simple in our ratings.
But if we are talking evening news at 6, I think it’s a bit of a stretch to include “Southern Cross News Tasmania” in Tasmania under the 7 NEWS banner, likewise it’s a bit of a stretch to include “Prime7 News Wagga” under the 7 NEWS banner.
If you want to talk 6pm, and how many people watch a news service branded and operated as 7 NEWS V how many people watch a news service operated and branded as 9 NEWS - I think that is up for debate.
Do you include Darwin? Do you include the Godl Coast’s 2 530 newscasts? Do you include NBN - which is owned by Nine, on Channel 9 - but still branded as NBN News. Do you include the 7 local “7 NEWS” services in queensland which are all local news only, not hybrid style?
If Prime7 took the “Prime” out of the title, do you suddenly;y include them even though they re also local news only?
Soon, “7 NEWS” will have broadcasts to
Top 5 cities
Gold Coast
Regional QLD (1.8 million)
“9 NEWS”
Will have broadcasts to
Tope 5 cities
Gold Coast
Darwin
Regional QLD 1.8m
SNSW 1.4m
VIC 1.1 m
That will very quickly make 9 NEWS the most watched news in Australia.
If NBN rebrands to 9 NEWS - that is another 2.2 million market
