Nine News Content and Appearance

Agreed. If you’re searching the App Store it looks like 9 no longer have a news app.

Strange move.

One of the strangest ‘rebrands’ in recent memory (other than 10 Streaming)

That’s 10 watch + stream free.

Mirroring the ABC?

What do you mean? The ABC have their own separate news app.

No I mean abc.net.au is the all-encompassing site.

Nine did a really effective marketing push for 9news.com.au about ten years ago. Seven was years behind. Real bad call IMO.

Agree.

if you want to be an always on news service that is not a 6pm linear news brand - you need your tv, social, YouTube, online, app and digital all branded “9News”

this move takes them back 5-10 years in thinking

who signed off on this strategy?!

I’d guess the news site was getting more traffic than nine.com.au, so the directive was from Nine Entertainment as opposed to the news department.

the news website SHOULD get more traffic over a generic corporate network brand website.

the problem is - what is Nine.com.au?

the entertainment brand is 9 with dots, not the word. The streaming place is 9 Now. The corp brand is nine entertainment. The news brand is 9 News

So what is “nine”

I’m lost. The brand is incredibly messy. No coherent strategy.

Nine is a Network and Entertainment brand all in one.

What’s old is new again really. It’s Ninemsn all over again.

It will always be Channel Nine to me whether they use a number or the letters “nine” it is the same I don’t think of it differently or it is inconsistent. They use the number 9 instead of the letters so when you view a list of apps on your phone it appears at the top of the list close by the 7 and 10 apps. It’s why channel seven renamed their app from Plus 7 to 7 Plus that is all and it is quite a practical use and makes complete sense.

Don’t understand why you’d not have it all branded under 9 News?

As others have said, this seems really bizarre and feels like a step back.

I honestly don’t think it’s that bad.

It houses everything under the one domain name and provides a single entry point to all of their products.

I can also see the 9Now branding disappear and they follow a similar path to what 10 did as well (since they’ve dropped the 10Play branding).

Which has been proven to be a terrible move for 10 in terms of future referencing.

They now have to resort to “10 Streaming”.

Well, only on this forum.

But their promotions say “watch on 10 or stream on the app”. And all the publicity says 10 watch + stream free.

I hear what you are saying in terms of a streamlined marketing message. But I think the change for 10 makes sense, especially when you ask where their audience is. For Nine News though, I think this is a backwards step. I think they were close up there with ABC News in terms of awareness for the website and the app.
