NINE EXPANDS NORTH AMERICAN PRESENCE WITH NEW WASHINGTON D.C. BUREAU
Nine is significantly strengthening its international news gathering capabilities with the launch of a new, dedicated bureau in Washington D.C. This expansion will provide audiences with unparalleled access to the epicentre of American politics.
Positioned just 300 metres from the Oval Office, the 9News Washington D.C. Bureau will take viewers from the White House to their house, offering a front-row seat to one of the most significant periods in modern political history.
As the United States grapples with the aftermath of a deeply consequential election, alongside escalating global tensions and pivotal social and economic shifts, Nineās presence in the capital will ensure Australians receive comprehensive, on-the-ground coverage of the decisions and events that increasingly shape our world.
The new Washington D.C. bureau will complement Nineās long-established Los Angeles bureau, which has served as a hub for over forty years, attracting Australiaās most experienced and respected journalists. The US bureaus provide extensive coverage for 9News, 60 Minutes, A Current Affair, Today and all of Nineās digital and social platforms.
Fiona Dear, Nineās Director of News and Current Affairs, said: āThis expansion takes our viewers to the doorstep of the White House and offers a front-row seat to the news and decision-making that is increasingly shaping our lives back home. We are committed to bringing Australians the most comprehensive and insightful coverage of global affairs.ā
Nine is also thrilled to announce that accomplished journalist Lauren Tomasi will be the new Washington Correspondent. Tomasi is perfectly placed to lead this new venture.
During her time as a U.S. Correspondent based in Los Angeles, Tomasi has reported from the heart of major events, from the glamour of red carpets to the devastation of natural disasters, mass shootings and terror attacks. She has been a vital part of Nineās acclaimed U.S. election coverage, reporting live from campaign rallies and pivotal courtroom moments across the country.
The 9News Washington D.C. Bureau is set to launch later this month.
This is brilliant from 9. Great to see nine expanding its news gathering.
Iād like them to also establish an Asian base so theyāve got key aspects from around the world with North America, Europe and Asia.
Yes big news. Iām sure Nine will also launch this bureau for its print and radio media outlets. Makes sense with the daily Donaldās comedy show.
Will they be broadcast in a Studio or outside the White House??
Probably both, like every other bureau.
Yes Tokyo or Hong Kong would be useful.
Wouldnāt Singapore make more sense, particularly given their newspapers have an office there?
or Singapore.
Was she a new appointment or was she based in the US anyway? Having multiple people in the US with one based in LA and one based in Washington DC makes sense. Save on flights as well. I know that Seven did have 2 or 3 US correspondents and I would say Nine would be the same. I watch Nine every night but donāt really notice who their current US correspondents are. Having one based in the East Coast makes alot of sense instead of them flying from LA. Sounds more like a cost saving exercise to me.
Yes, she is one of their current US Correspondents.
I thought Jono Kersley would take the job
Why?
Now that Nathan mentions it, does seem a little interesting that Jonathan was overlooked - heās regularly reporting from Washington / anything on Trump.
Even fronted Nineās recent program on Trumpās first 100 days in office.
Itās like heās the Charles Croucher of the group there in the U.S.
Given he is a former political reporter and as others have noted has regularly reported on the Trump Administration, he would have been the logical choice.
Maybe heās settled with family or a partner in LA and doesnāt want to move? Or maybe heās ready to come back to Aus.
But very happy to Lauren taking that role
Maybe all of those things, but without knowing itās still interesting given everything mentioned above.
Maybe heās joining 10 ![]()
Lauren is better anyway
