Nine News Content and Appearance

I watched a bit of one of last Thursday’s Nine Melbourne bulletin on 9Now to see what Alicia and Tom were like… I thought they worked well, Alicia’s delivery did look more polished than Tom’s, but that’s probably due more to experience, I’m sure Tom will get better.

The desk also seemed a little crowded when Tony was there for sport as well, but I guess that’s only for a very short period of time.

Though I did note Melbourne are still including the reporter’s name in the intro eg. “As Mark Santomartino explains” … I’ve always found this a little odd and unnecessary, particularly when there is now a reporter super (something Melbourne didn’t always have) as well as the reporter sign off.

Sydney has never done this, I don’t think Brisbane has either, not sure about Adelaide and Perth?

I think Brisbane is the only market left that shows the super with the reporter’s name, and below it the word “REPORTING”, at the start of a report.

Yes, Sydney used to have the reporter super at the start of the report, and also if/when the reporter appeared on screen as well, but now only have the latter.

If eg. for a sports report, they don’t appear on screen, there is no super at all. I would rather have have the reporter super somewhere in every report though.

Oh god.

It’d be interested if Tom does these “investigations”.

He and Alicia introduced the story by Neary Ty.

Standing presentation with both of them was used.

How is this a “Special Event”…?

Tom needs to figure out what to do with his hands rather than sticking one in his pocket.

Does Melbourne alternate between Alica and Tom as to who leads… like in the opening V/O and reading first?

Nope. Alicia is always first for the VO however they both read the opening story together.

I like those shots, but gosh Tom looks a little awkward…

does he? he’s just standing there normally.

He just looks so unnecessary

So true. He just looks like he doesn’t belong or need to be there. At all.

Of course, he doesn’t NEED to be there, Alicia is perfectly capable of doing it solo.

But i think it’s a bit harsh to say that Tom doesn’t belong or deserve to be there. He’s well qualified and has the journalistic experience and is doing okay so far.

Though I think he’s been thrown in the deep end a little presernting wise, with hindsight, Nine should have given him more presenting exposure by doing 4pm news last year.

I mean do either of them need to be standing there?
Feeling like it’s clutching at straws to criticise every move he makes.

Standing presentation is stupid full stop.

I was very sceptical of Tom joining, however the bulletin works and is very watchable with both in the chair.

I think it works okay for maybe the headline story or something, but would rather see them seated otherwise.

Interesting all the negative commentary on Tom. IMO, he is doing a great job. Do we extend the same criticism to say…Rick Ardon - is he necessary?. Very wooden presentation style. What about Will Goodings? Ch 7 Adelaide went solo with Jane Doyle when John Riddell retired, but have returned to a dual presenter role. With current ratings after a couple of weeks, I’d say people are turned off on him at all…
