SWM coming across very sour in that article because they missed out on one of the biggest interviews of the decade. There’s no doubt this will pull huge ratings for Channel 9 and their news division.
I wonder what @SydneyCityTV thinks about all of this?
Given SWM’s dominance in WA I was a bit surprised that Cleo Smith’s parents chose to sign with Nine. Their story will only appear on Nine’s WAToday website rather than being published in the state’s only major daily, The West Australian.
Do we really need a reminder on how MediaSpy lost one of their most respected members because they had a different opinion on the Cleo saga?
Having a different opinion is fine, arguing your point is fine, but I draw the line when a member was told to “find their heart”, or that they were “struggling with empathy” just because they had a different opinion to everyone else.
On the topic of Cleo, I think this documentary shouldn’t go ahead - could the family just have some privacy now?
It might pull big ratings but ethically it’s literally one of the worst things in broadcast journalism. I doubt Nine (or Seven for that matter) will approach this with any sensitivity whatsoever. They’ll no doubt have the ‘Bombshell of the Century’ or the ‘Interview of the Millenium’ promos blasting out and someone like Tara Brown asking some questions just to stump the family.
It might draw ratings for curiosity’s sake but it certainly won’t improve Nine’s reputation if their form of chequebook journalism is anything to go by.
To be fair, the people The Australian interviewed (all anonymously of course) for their article about the reported deal weren’t complimentary of Nine at all. Here’s one such example from the article:
“This is insane. This is dinosaur chequebook journalism,” said one insider. “It smacks of an inexperienced chief executive [Mike Sneesby] who has got a rush of blood in his first bidding war.
“Shareholders will be screaming. Kerry Stokes is an astute judge – he knows what a story is worth – and, instinctively, knew it wasn’t worth this much.”
the original article was from The West Australian newspaper - SWM, hence the criticism of Nine and the glowing compliments of Kerry ‘astute judge’ Stokes
