I’m probably going to be in a small minority here, but I really hope the Harbour City will not get a Perth-style set.
Stick with tradition, TCN.

Before I watched last night’s 9 News Sydney bulletin, I would have disagreed. But watching last night, the set didn’t look out-dated and I realised how good it really is. IMO, Nine News Sydney’s should not go for the ‘American’-look, like Nine News Perth, and avoid the dark lighting, which their rival both use heavily since the February relaunch.
What tradition?
‘Tradition’ dictates that sets do get updated after a while. Recent ‘tradition’ dictates that 9 does get uniform(ish) sets.
100% tomorrow night is go time. It’s a work in progress.
As in Sunday night? Can you confirm if it is just Sydney or nationwide?
Looking forward to it!!!
Will it be exactly the same as the current Perth graphics package, or a little bit modified?
I admit the TCN set does look amazing on an OLED TV, can see all the detail and effort gone into it. It’s been around for least 7 years and the way it’s all going, better to use all screens. Of course it’s going to look too bright, news sets across Australia have always been dull. Also those screen can easily push above 300-500 nits and consider that half the studio is full of screen, it’s going to be bright.
Seven News Sydney looks ok but not great, Seven News Perth well what’s the point, its all virtual and rendered so it must not be fun presenting in front of a green screen day in, day out. Ten Eyewitness News, well their sets have never been that great nor that bad. Nine is now moving to the current world news standard type of set that is full of screens and virtual graphics.
I don’t think we have seen the full use of what these sets can do because Perth has rarely used their set apart from the first night (most have been just the LIVE backdrop and the videowall behind Sports). Maybe waiting for the other markets to catchup and then we can see the full potential of these sets.
Be excited, cause Nine is the first network in Australia to use this new type of presenting. Another good thing too is the set can be changed and be used for anything with a flick of a switch.
It be the same, if there is tweaks then Perth will get the same straight away. I will be interested how all markets will handle the change as they are really designed with the Perth and Sydney set in mind.
So no big promotional push ahead of the “relaunch”? It kind of defeats the purpose if only the current viewers see the changes. Should have be ready for the NRL Grand Final Sunday and been accompanied by some sort to “switch to Nine” campaign.
This is a new set and graphics refresh. This kind of thing does not recruit viewers. It’s simply updating, keeping fresh and not getting outdated. Not really the kind of thing to promote.
9 Perth is a little different. They were selling a re-energized station, brand new home and with their ratings position they are trying to create excitement / knowledge of their product
I would not expect east coast stations to run promos about a new set / gfx
Well, Nine is still no. 1 in Sydney, so no need for a “switch” style campaign.
And I wouldn’t be expecting any promotional push just for a new set and other cosmetic changes. Some of Nine’s audience may in fact be wary of any “new look” - some of them don’t like to be told that there is a change coming.
Any such promotion over cosmetics is likely to only appeal to the 0.000001% of the population that spends waaaay too much time on forums like Media Spy
…oooh wait, that’s me!
A source has told me that Sydney will get the new set along with the graphics relaunch tonight, Melbourne’s set is on the way while other markets will have to wait (Adelaide and Brisbane respectively).
I would assume the graphics package will be rolled out nationally tomorrow from the Early News, with the new graphics being introduced to Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Adelaide Monday (tomorrow) night.
Newcastle?
Come on Nine Northern NSW - time to GET IN FORMATION!
Is the reason a new set is being launched on a Sunday maybe because Today will be using it too?
While I would love for this to happen, the new set is being implemented at TCN for Nine News Sydney on a Sunday because today is considered the start of the week (notice Pete and the main team work Sunday- Thursday).
Autobots… TRANSFORM! [Insert transformers transforming noise here]
I don’t agree with that. Sets hardly ever launch on a Sunday (which is my point on why today is unusual).
It’s going to be good to see TCN with the new set! I don’t think it’s far fetched to think that they could put the new set in Studio 1. The current set is on casters and they used to move it out every evening when Today and Mornings were done from the same studio. So I think they could just roll it out of the way for the new set, though the new set doesn’t look like it could just roll in. Anyway, IIRC, the studio was big enough to fit both Nine News and Financial Review Sunday, so the new set could already be in there. Just my thoughts anyway.
As for NBN (Nine Newcastle/NNSW), I don’t see them getting any of it soon, set or graphics. A couple of years ago I was talking to a sales manager from a broadcast equipment supplier in Sydney, who we got much of our control room equipment from, and who has dealt with NBN. He said, back then, that NBN’s master control equipment was quite old (8-bit even). I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same in their studio control room. I can see that it already struggles with the Nine News styled opener graphics (with the NBN News logo moving over the dotted globe) and the transitions in from ad breaks. They don’t even include the spinning globe under the watermark on their lower third supers.
You have to wonder if that is the situation, why do people complain about graphics and news sets at all if they aren’t used to attract an audience.
This will probably be the biggest single day change to the On-Air Presentation at Nine News in a decade (at least), so I definitely think it would’ve been worthy of a massive promotional campaign with buzzphrases such as “A major evolution in Australian television news” IMO.
Knowing their tendency to mention things to their viewers like the retirement of longtime floor managers and helicopter pilots as well as birthday wishes to their former longtime newsreader, I wonder if Nine News Sydney will give the new look a notable mention On-Air tonight?
And Nine News Darwin as well? You’d presume that they would at least pick up the new look graphics, set wise I wouldn’t be surprised if they stick with what they’ve got for the time being.
It wouldn’t really surprise me if Nine News Sydney uses a Sunday night to relaunch. What would genuinely surprise me though is them being able to remove the current/old set, install the new set and have it 100% ready for On-Air use in less than a day when the current/old set was still used last night:
