I don’t recall TCN ever having a chromakey set but in all honesty the Perth set is still just a desk with a few plasmas as the background. I can’t imaging anyone having a fit over having to present in front of something so simple. For anyone who has watched the clips from Nine Perth, the set is similar in size to the current east coast versions anyways.
Lol they had it for years in Sydney. - desk and a chroma keyed live shot.
If anything, Pete here in Melbourne would love a high tech looking set. He’s a very tech savvy man and is very passionate about innovation I feel these comments of him being uncomfortable are rubbish. It’s a set full of screens. No different to what’s there now except majority of it at the moment is wood, plastic and some lights.
I think Nine News Perth need to shift their focus to their anchors’ experience (including the weekend anchors) and gaining the trust of viewers. Liam Bartlett’s time on 60 Minutes speaks it for itself, and Emmy is commonly known in Perth for her stints on Seven News Perth.
IMO, the national news set in Studio 3 will probably work OK-ish with the new look apart from a few minor changes. In particular, updating the plasma graphics and changing the globe panels to ones that match the newer graphics. With that in mind, I’m now starting to think that the 6pm news in Sydney and Melbourne would work better with the new look if the bulletins adopted a simpler national news/ACA-style set (but obviously slightly larger and without the news exchange bit, etc.) rather than a rather visually busy Nine News Perth-style set.
For the most part, the current theme music and associated transitional sound effects work well enough with the graphics package which on a completely national basis will probably be considered to be “the previous look” of Nine News on Sunday night. But from what I’ve seen of Nine News Perth since their refresh, the current theme music and sound effects sound rather jarring with the new graphics. Personally I think Nine News could do a lot worse than a refreshed version of the music and some better sound effects to go with the new graphics sometime down the track, especially when most other major TV news services in this country have had major refreshes to their sound since the start of the current decade. Keep the “Cool Hand Luke” signature of course, but give it a contemporary sound. We might be in 2016 going on 2017, but Nine News’ current theme distinctively sounds more like something from 1986 going on 1987 to my ears.
Admittedly I think that the white/blue/red tones of the “Nine News Breaking” graphic (perhaps something we’ll see with the generic look of national bulletins?) I posted earlier looks a little better than the vile “sunset” colour scheme seen in the version of the titlecard graphics Perth currently use. Still far too Ten Eyewitness News-esque IMO, but better nonetheless.
@Read_It_First told me that Nine News Sydney are getting the new set with the new graphics package. The new graphics package is planned to be rolled out nationally by Monday evening.
