Nine News Content and Appearance (2015-Sept 2020)

And, IMO, Nine has put enormous efforts into Nine News Perth in the last two years, but unfortunately it doesn’t work for them ratings wise.

Channel Seven Perth is owned by the same media company that owns Perth’s main newspaper in The West Australian. Along with those cross-media tie-ins that East Coast commercial TV stations can only dream of having, Seven Perth has Rick Ardon, Susannah Carr, Basil Zempilas (as far as Perth sports presenters are concerned, I’m pretty sure he would be Perth’s equivalent to Ken Sutcliffe or Tony Jones), a local Today Tonight with Monika Kos, community service initiatives like Telethon, Fat Cat kids goodnights, Fred Botica (spelling?) on local voiceovers, the AFL, top rating primetime shows…and the list goes on really.

The point is, that Channel Seven Perth is regarded as a heavily local station because of factors such as the above. Nine in Perth has long struggled in the ratings thanks to constant news presenter/reporter changes over the years and poor management by previous owners of the station. I also suspect that Nine is perceived as “too East Coast centric” in the eyes of many Perth viewers, and that’s probably true to some extent because Nine’s main markets of focus have generally always only been Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane…in part because Nine has traditionally only had TCN, GTV and QTQ as it’s flagship O&O stations up until fairly recently of course.

Realistically, even the lure of a world class set and HD production will not be enough to get Perth viewers switching over to Nine News. Unless the news operation of Seven Perth was to screw up really, really badly and happen to have something like a Brian Williams-esque or 60 Minutes-esque controversy that destroys the credibility of the station in the eyes of Perth viewers, Seven are not going to be losing their position as Perth’s #1 rating TV station (and probably the highest rating capital city TV station in Australia) anytime soon IMO!

Minor detail but looks like Emmy and Tim have swapped positions on the desk. In the promos anyway.

I don’t think the “east coast” argument or Seven being more local argument stacks up. After all Nine Perth (and the whole 9 network) was owned by Alan Bond at one stage in the 80s - what could be more west coast than that? And regarding newspaper tie ins, Seven Brisbane was owned by the Courier Mail and HSV, we know what that stands for and that didn’t see the stations dominating their markets.

It seems to me that when Seven News in various markets is outrated these forums blame that on presenter/s, news theme, graphics, story focus but when it comes to 9 Perth there seem to always be excuses put forward. Nine will have owned the station outright for 3 years later this month, surely enough time to mean it can be judged the same as elsewhere. It seems that viewers in Perth just don’t like 9 News much at the moment. If the same east coast standards are applied it could be the presenters, graphics, stories, general presentation or a combination of all.

I hope that the new presentation style has an impact but perhaps Perth viewers are saying they want the content improved as well. I say, less smoke and mirrors and get down to reporting the news in a professional way without so many bells and whistles. That would be a point of difference to Seven!

Wow, all the shots of young kids and physical activity seem like a non-so-subtle fuck you to Grandma Sue and Grandpa Rick over on Seven.

Set looks great. Love all the subtle layers of different materials and screens. Definitely the best, most advanced set in Australia.

I am really unsure of this vortex looking globe. Looks a bit odd in my opinion - probably the only thing I don’t like.

It looks like its trying to suck the logo into a black hole. Should of kept the dots I reckon, but just updated it all a bit.

Wouldn’t surprise me if that desk rise is on a rotation turntable like NBC today

Now that Perth has such a massive, versatile set, I would really love to see Today come to Perth next time they do a we love Australia tour.

I think that is guaranteed now.
Also that set could easily be used for Today and 9News in Sydney. Same elements Today already has IMO.

All they would need to do is change the graphics and lighting and bam… its a new set for Today.

It really is quite a versatile set they’ve got

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one of the reasons why Nine is using Perth as the guinea pig for what is apparently supposed to be “the new network wide set”, to see if it can work well for both breakfast TV and the 6pm news here in Sydney.

Personally, I really hope that Nine News Sydney gets it’s new look sooner rather than later but if they’re holding it off for Early 2017 with possibly a refreshed look for Today at that time, then I can perhaps understand why. Knowing Nine’s usual standards for On-Air Presentation, it should be well worth the wait in any case!

Something I’ve found interesting with Nine Perth’s lack of viewers is comparing its number of facebook followers- now I know these are easily bought and sold so it’s not the most accurate metric, but I find the difference between TVW and STW kind of interesting.

STW: 473,538 Page Likes.

TVW: 371,429 Page Likes.

The complete disaster that was the Coronation Street experiment is always understated. Seven had underwhelming years in 2004/2005 and Nine was literally 20-30k (averaged) viewers off beating them. As soon as Corrie was introduced that gap grew very, very quickly back to the 50-80k range and only got worse over time.

I follow both 7 and 9 Perth on Facebook. I would say 9 does a much better job. They do great local coverage and often break news and have online specific content - they also use Facebook live. I would say they do a much better job.
