Just noticed that Nine News Melbourne is still using the cowbell theme in their promo end tags.
A live tour of the newsroom to show the measures taken to ensure they can continue to bring local news every weeknight:

Just bring back Nightline and remove that ghastly backdrop for a night time bulletin. Pete’s tan blends into the skyline
The footage of Nine’s Brisbane newsroom is very reminiscent of their late 1980’s news set. Maybe it’s the same room.
Well spotted.
It’s so reliant on lead in as it has no set time. It’s all over the place. One can’t possibly plan to watch it as it’s never in the same place. It’s a far superior product to rivals. If it had a set time of 9, you could count on it being there and actually tune it
It’s ratings are so depandant on lead as BECAUSE it has so no set time
I have had a quick look on YouTube. Not many videos from that era, I did find one however. You may be correct, here are some caps that span from the late 80s, to the late 90s where each set features similar structural features. I could be wrong however.
Guys… no need to speculate. It is in fact the current news room which is where the news used to be recorded. You can see the light grid etc.
Yes, it most certainly is. The new newsroom was a whole new part of the complex and completed in early 1987 when Bondy had cash to splash around (a new transmission tower was also built at the same time). Apart from a bit of a blue paint job in early 1992 and renovation in 1996 (they used a different studio with chroma-key over a weekend and nobody even noticed whilst they renovated over one weekend) this newsroom set was used up until late 1999 or early 2000 (I can’t tell you exactly when as I was overseas for a year).
Here is a clip from 1989. Note the typewriter noise in the background. By 6pm each night the newsroom was cleared so there was no background noise (especially from typewriters). No such thing as breaking news back then - all pre-packagaed reports!
I have on a tape somewhere a whole story from “Extra” regarding the renovation from 1996 but do you think I can find it anywhere?
All old-era Channel 9 buildings follow some sort of design and colour scheme similar to this. The old newsroom at Blake Street in Darwin looks pretty much alike except its 1 floor. I believe the old Nine building in Canberra followed this also.
Wouldn’t be shocked if we see Nine leave Mt Coot-tha soon but considering the economy and the situation right now, I doubt it would be this year.
Moving off the mountain doesn’t pass the cost-benefit analysis… which is why none of the stations have done it.
What building would that be? I thought Nine has only ever had a Canberra bureau in Parliament House, the old House and the current House.
46 Aspinall Street, just behind Prime.
I believe it was mainly used by SCA but it has since closed?
Not quite, all 3 commercial station in brisbane have a 100 year lease on their sites before giving it abck to the Council in I think 2059. If they move now, they can’t do anything with the buildings so it makes sense that they are staying put. All 3 have plenty of spare space as they all have a quarter of the staff they used to and very litle a(part from news) studio production these days.
But that has never been owned by Nine, so never a Nine studio.
Yes. QTQ has sort of turned into a dumping ground where Nine equipment goes to die from all the capital cities like NTD and TCN. All the old studio spaces have been jam-packed with old sets and equipment.
I have no doubt. I believe some of ATN’s & HSV’s archives are at BTQ for the same reason.
