Nine News Content and Appearance (2015-Sept 2020)

A very good source confirmed to me today that Nine will be launching a brand new graphics package for Nine News. Can’t confirm when sorry. Will try and find out.

As for sets…I would certainly not set high hopes but cannot confirm.

Intriguing

please no more blue, red and white.

I know it doesn’t suit the tabloid news styles here, but look to Gannett (bugger me did I just say that???!) for inspiration. Clean, crisp, clear and easy on the eyes.

Strange to see Nine launching new graphics especially after they made those modifications late last year. But I definitely agree a new set is need. IIRC the current local sets are over 6 years old!

The current Nine News Sydney set (which was the first in the series) will be seven years old this year!

Although presentation isn’t always everything. It must be remembered that Nine’s Sydney 6pm bulletin was a consistent ratings topper for many years when they basically just had Hendo/Waley/Roscoe presenting in front of a blue globe map as the backdrop.

With HD becoming more the norm for networks, I suspect Nine will be looking toward making their new news presentation (if it’s true) appear better in HD.

American cable news channels and newscasts began to move away from their garish obsession with darker hues of blue, red and brown with the ascension of HD. If you look at Fox News or MSNBC today, a lot of their shows feature brighter graphics and sets (especially light blues and yellows). ABC World News Tonight has also adopted a slicker look.

CNN’s current lower-thirds would’ve looked great 10 years ago, but currently they look plain because its just black, grey, red and white. Their old graphics were better. NBC Nightly News also looks dated precisely because of how much the graphics rely on a disgusting colour scheme.

Interesting to see the parallels between Australian and American TV presentation and the implementation of HD.

At the very least I hope they upgrade the “live” shot camera on the backdrop to a HD one… Since 9HD went to air, it’s been a bit of a weak link I think, presentation wise.

And I am hoping for new lower thirds. Since Gyngell is no longer there, perhaps they will ditch the Roosters based colour scheme for something fresher.

LOL (at the Roosters reference)!

What sort of colour scheme would work well for Nine News? I know they used blue/orange years ago, but I think that’s a bit garish and dated for this day and age. Maybe a blue/white/silver colour palate might work well?

Blue/white/silver I think is taken by Ten
If that Nine News Now opener is anything to go by, the scheme will remain blue white and red.

When will any of the networks get brave and completely change everything? #justdoit

As much as I completely agree, I doubt that any of the two major networks would be brave enough to completely change every element of their brand. It’s also quite risky to completely remove iconic elements from TV branding, as Seven learnt about two years ago when they decided to completely replace their news theme.

Besides, what does the general viewing public care most about? The branding of networks or the programs they put on? I think we all know the answer to that…

As a long suffering Sharks supporter, I think it should be black, white and sky blue!

But seriously, I quite like the current Lollipop colour scheme on my Samsung Galaxy phone. It has Aqua, light orange, light green, sky blue, a bit of purple and white.

Maybe they should head back to the gold and blue style they had during 2004-2006. Probably the best news graphics at the time in my opinion.

Maybe change the orange to red but keep that colour blue. And change the stripes in the globe to red dots. I think would look decent enough.

The blue in the Nine News Now opener looks too bright for an evening news bulletin, so perhaps keep that shade for daytime bulletins. Anyway that’s just my 2 cents worth

More recent Nine News packages seem to have be variations of blue and red. If they continue with that and Nine News Now is anything to go by, the blue could be slightly lighter and the red slightly pinker. Might look like this:

Any one remember the massive QTQ desk with full width live shot from 2008?

That QTQ desk looks like one from my local dentist!

I wouldn’t call that mess “slick” - it’s bloody awful!

holy crap… you’re right. I’ve NEVER thought of it that way, but you are so right!

Sure, for Australian tastes it looks unusual.

It looks VERY different in comparison to the predominant colour scheme of American newscasts.

8 years ago - darker shades of gold, blue, red which look better in SD and analogue. Today - cooler shades of blue, brighter reds, more 2D, specifically designed to look crisper on HD screens.

It’s not just in the US either. The BBC News at 10 in 2003 and the same bulletin in 2015. Note the differences in the colour schemes between the two. Whites and reds are brighter.

Probably made by the same people.
