Overton is getting around less than half the audience Hendo got in his glory years, despite the Sydney population increasing. Beating the rubbish that Seven puts out each night is an achievement, of course.
Hendo didnât have competition from other entertainment sources eg. TV streaming though.
For as long as they still have Peter Overton & Cameron Williams (thereâll never be another Hendo & Kenny, but those two will probably be the closest weâll get to one) along with Georgie Gardner & Deborah Knight as their back up newsreaders and a quality reporting team with the content to match that, I can see Nine News Sydney remaining #1 in the ratings for years to come.
Yes, the Nine News Sydney with Peter Overton isnât as popular as National Nine News Sydney with Brian Henderson was back in the day, but times and the media landscape have changed.
I reckon Hitch is closer to a Hendo than Peter Overton is⌠maybe in 20 years time he might be.
Yeah, because the media landscape is exactly the same as when Hendo was reading the newsâŚ
Iâm guessing that he and the other presenters will go back to reporting other reporters that are not originally front Darwin relocated to make way. The news report said the majority of staff will be relocated to employment elsewhere in the network.
Itâs Melbourne which is the real success for Nine.
Sydney is an NRL town so Nine gets a free kick. Judging by the table you posted, Nine does stronger on Sundays (with the NRL lead-in) than on weekdays. Meanwhile Seven has the AFL rights in Melbourne and hence a homeground advantage, yet the weekday gap between Nine and Seven is huge.
Nice to see Seven are still winning weekends in Brisbane at least. Kay and Rod should have never been dumped.
That table would be really interesting compared to one with the ratings of 1997 and 2007. The landscape sure has changed.
Sports presenter Erin Molan falls off her chair during Nine News bulletin
NINE News sports presenter Erin Molan was caught in a TV gaffe, after she unexpectedly fell off her chair while reading her evening bulletin. Molan, who reads for Nine News in Sydney, was about to read the latest results from the Tour de France, when she went silent.
A large thud was then heard by viewers, before she said âSh*tâ.

Nine News was still able to win Sydney and Melbourne for another year, despite Hot Seat going to a full hour at the start of official ratings and losing to The Chase most of the time. Some viewers really have a dislike of Mark Ferguson in Sydney. In Melbourne Peter Hitchener remains as popular as ever (his regular appearance on Denis Walterâs 3AW show on Tuesday lunchtime doesnât hurt either).
Iâm sure a lunch time media appearance in the middle of a weekday really drives the numbers
He also has an impressive social media presence for a man his age.
Including some members here on MS.
Also on Nightline right after the news at 10.
Plus heâs a lege. All he wants to do is have a laugh and help others have a laugh and have fun.
Hitch is the best presenter on 9 by far.
I donât think itâs a case of disliking him. Itâs not like viewers are switching off from The Chase to Seven News. The ratings go up. Itâs a case of Nine News getting more. Maybe itâs the newsreader but itâs the same with other newsreaders. So maybe itâs the news service viewers prefer.
He commented on one of my snaps recently. Best newsman in Melbourne IMO.
I think it would be quite fair to say that Peter Hitchener is one of the main reasons (if not the main reason) why Nine News rates so well in Melbourne on weeknights. The day he retires will be an extremely sad one for Nine News and Melbourne as a whole.
Since 2014, Seven News Sydney have changed the set, graphics, theme music, and the presenters for Sport, Weather and Friday/Saturday News on more than one occasion. Despite that, they still canât outrate Nine! Doesnât this tell you that the content and/or Mark Ferguson is part of the problem with Seven News Sydney?
Nine News Sydney is #1 largely because theyâve remained comparatively more stable and consistent in recent years. Of course there are elements of Nine News Sydney Iâd like to see changed (the most obvious one being the weather coverage) and Iâm not entirely happy about the direction theyâve been taking their branding in lately but overall, they deserve to be #1 in the ratings far more than Seven News Sydney does right now.
Disappointing that Nine didnât make Darwin a hub to produce news for other regions. At least NTDâs news rates with some of the SCA markets not doing too well. Money not well spent.
For where? Itâs easier and closer for bulletins to be done from respective capitals. The only market that Darwin could do would be Central.
Itâs a big shame Darwin news will no longer be produced from Darwin, but it makes more sense cost-wise.
Promos for the new set in QLD have been showing since yesterday.
