What are we looking at here?

That is a twitter post from Nine News Queensland, talking about a news item from Cairns, for which they have no images of.

Melbourne ran the stories but only for about 15 seconds. Melb and Syd being larger markets (with more resources) usually have a lot more news to report and run a pretty tight bulletin.

These are just fluff pieces to fill in time. Brisbane/Adelaide/Perth should cut their bulletins down to 30mins if they are just going to fill them with ads.

By the way the output quality from Nine Brisbane is just appalling. The set is pretty ugly too a new set couldn’t come soon enough.

Or the Directors of the bulletin and the viewers in turn have a higher expectation on delivering/receiving quality news.

That won’t happen because of PR. Although, when I think about, the Brisbane bulletin certainly did become more littered since the expansion. However, I think Nine News Brisbane would still be sensationalist and have tacky presentation whether the bulletin was 30/60 minutes long.

I find Brisbane very amateur at times, watching Eva Milic fumble every bulletin is just below par compared to what you get in other markets. I rate Hitch/Overton/Gardner/Loxley as very professional anchors who can land a bulletin with authority.

By any chance, does anyone know who the current Director for Nine News Queensland is since Mike Dalton (not the reporter, of course) moved onto the regional bulletins?

To the best of my knowledge, Simon Hobbs and Hugh Nailon are Nine’s local news directors for Sydney & Melbourne respectively while Darren Wick is the director for Nine News & Current Affairs on a national basis.

Different network I know, but the same can be said for Seven News Sydney. Even before the expansion to an hour, their content quality was on the dubious side at times.

Thank you, the main reason I watch ABC News is because of the blatant ads disguised as stories. If I wanted a good quality hour long local bulletin, I’d switch on Ten before either 7 or 9.

Could not disagree more with you. Eva Milic is an outstanding presenter who delivers the Queensland daytime bulletins with absolute class. She’s got the perfect balance of serious presentation and when to have a laugh.

As for some of her colleagues… well that’s another story in my opinion.

@Pranks Then I assume you haven’t seen Nine News Queensland on weekends with Mrs Loud and Mr Deer-in-the-headlights?

Yes - Ten manage to find enough content for a fairly balanced hour of news and have managed to do that for 30 years. Not sure why there isn’t enough news to fill an hour now.

Tonight’s highlight from Nine was how to make money by winning competitions (and it was “First on Nine”). The bulletin is increasingly filled with these “how to save/make money” Aussie battler stories .The stories, however, are much more than fluff used to fill in time. (In general) these stories are the primary focus of promotional efforts for the night before with the message of tune in tomorrow night to find out how to save/make money. Then during the bulletin they are promoted leading into breaks then appear towards the end after the sport. I can only assume the approach is working (unfortunately).

Must be. I was forced to watch a couple of nights of Seven News Queensland a few weeks ago and spotted no such advertising then, so I hope the disease doesn’t spread.

It’s interesting. This sort of fare is typical for ACA but not the main bulletins. When Seven axed TT, I expected Seven News to become a lot more trashy. Actually, the opposite has happened in Queensland, with Nine going waaaaay downmarket and Seven holding a shaky balance between fearmongering and decency.

I believe it’s Amanda Patterson.

You’re never going to get a clear cut answer from the whole of Media Spy as to exactly which network has the best quality news service, because many people here have preferences towards or against networks so it’s a question open to personal interpretation. Also, the situation with the news services varies greatly from market to market.

But if you really want my personal opinion…

Here in Sydney, ABC News is the best. Nine is second and the best commercial choice, but some dubious quality sports reporters and weather presenters drag the quality down to a distant #2 behind the ABC when it could otherwise be a close #2 or even #1.

IMO the local news on Seven and Ten is considerably behind the quality of Nine’s in this market, largely because almost all their best presenters/reporters have left over the past decade!

The same Amanda Patterson who used to be a reporter on ACA? If so, that’s certainly rather interesting…

I assume so. Also was on Extra, did spots on the Today show and with 9 News here and there.
If somebody moving up the ranks of a part of an organisation is interesting, then yes I guess it’s interesting.

Weidler always gets his head on camera for more time than the person he is interviewing and a lot of his ‘exclusives’ are nothing; Breen was good ten odd years ago when he was a regular guest on Today as the editor of The Sunday Telegraph - what happened to him because he’s now very wooden, disinterested and looks like he’d rather be somewhere else.

He isn’t boring. He is dreadful, and reminds me of someone evil (heck, even the average Mel McLaughlin on Seven is far better than Breen or Weidler IMO). He should really stick to print media in the future.

In terms of quality. definitely Nine News Sydney is better than Seven (coming from a Seven fan). The reporters and presenters (with the exception of Michael Usher, David Brown, Angie Asimus, Jim Wilson, Ryan Phelan etc.) are awful, and the quality…typical Seven really.

I personally think that Adelaide has the best quality of Seven News in Australia. It’s fast-paced, and any tabloid shit is on TT, and even then Adelaide’s TT team can make shit like this shine.

I think @SydneyCityTV was saying that since Patterson worked on Extra/ACA, then perhaps that is the reason why Nine News Brisbane has a lot of fluff/cross-promoting pieces frequently airing in the bulletin.

From what I’ve seen, Seven News Brisbane can be just as bad at times. On Sunday, they had at least 5 ‘7 News First’ transitions, and more than half of them were not news items.
