Nine News Content and Appearance (2015-Sept 2020)

I would add the following to your list:

  • Change the weekend weather presenter of Nine News Sydney (preferably Sophie Walsh, but Kate Creedon or Airlie Walsh would be fine as well).
  • Get Rebecca Maddern in the Nine News Melbourne weekend chair so that when Hitch retires, she will replace him instead of Tony (Although it’s more than likely that he will replace Hitch)
  • Get three good looking sets for the regional bulletins, and change the set on the Gold Coast to look good (don’t have to be big, but needs to look good).
  • Immediately replace the weekend presenters of Nine News Queensland (Main anchors) and replace them with Eva Milic (even though it won’t work until Kay McGrath leaves anyway).

Wow @Tom_TV7 have you hacked into my account? All great points, points I was actually going to make. However, I think Julie Snook or Natalia Cooper should replace Belinda (ignoring their current roles) and when the time comes, Amber Sherlock.

Also in Adelaide I suggest that they have one/both of the main anchors on Sundays. From what I saw a few weeks ago when Will McDonald was on holidays and Brenton/Kate did a weekend on, weekend off solo and I believe the ratings were better. Either run a roster similar to Nine News Sydney or (I know it is asking a lot of the news anchors) but get them to do 6 day weeks for a bit. Nine News Adelaide are not going to win Monday- Fridays for a while yet but I think a good place to start is weekends, where the competition seems weaker.

It’s great that we have the same thoughts on how Nine News should shape out in the future. As mentioned many times before, Darren Curtis and Alison Ariotti are the worst presenters I’ve ever seen on TV, and they should both be shafted from presenting (much prefer them sharing the local bulletins together if they HAVE to present).

I myself live in South Australia, so I can see where your points are coming from. Yes Seven news tends to be weaker on weekends (beaten by ABC news on the odd Saturdays), and from this, we can see that Jess Adamson isn’t really that much better than Will McDonald. However, It probably would be a very different story if Seven didn’t axe Graeme Goodings and ADDED Jessica Adamson as a second co-anchor (something I wanted to see happen, but frustrating didn’t), that would pretty much put Seven in an unbeatable position in Adelaide and make it just as strong as the weeknights. Nine should probably work harder if they want to have any chances of winning ratings given that their usually 3rd in terms of news rankings for in Adelaide, and IMO your opinion would work well (Yes I am a bit of a Seven News fan) and could help ratings here in Adelaide, but in the foreseeable future Seven will stay dominant in Adelaide and in Perth.

they’re probably still typing the info in.

They seem to have it in the autocue though.

Well, this is interesting…

Did the bulletin just not come back from an ad break at one point?

I’m in Perth at the moment and while in the city I went and had a look at STW9. It’s hard to see through the window (double glazed with tinting), but from what I could see, the set really isn’t all that big. Maybe it wouldn’t be too hard to fit in studio 21?

Evacuating because of what? Hope it isn’t something terrible.

They were evacuated because of a fire alarm:

The GC news was normal up to the first break but didn’t return after that, instead Extra was shown. The rest of the bulletin was MIA. There was no notice to viewers about what was happening.

You’d think Nine could have run a ticker message across the bottom of Extra to explain things?

There were also opportunities not taken to make an announcement with the promos for the 6pm news shown during Extra or at start the 6pm News or during the cross to the GC during that news or even the weather from the GC .

Perhaps difficult to put a super if no one is in the control room?
How much/many of the inserts (like promos) were prerecorded before the evacuation?

The control room for the GC News is in Brisbane as far as I know. No real excuse for not mentioning it at some point during the 6pm bulletin.

Edit: In addition there is always a live insert into the GC bulletin where they interact with the Brisbane studio about that night’s 6pm headlines.

Where was the evacuation/is the studio in GC or also is Brisbane?

The Gold Coast bureau where the bulletin and the anchors/journalists are based.

OK, cheers. Given that I agree Nine should’ve done something on-air to acknowledge what happened, even though they’d be very busy at that time.

Why would they be busy? They would have been supposed to have been producing a Gold Coast bulletin including a live cross to Brisbane but nothing went to air.

Admittedly I’m just guessing what was happening there that night, but I understand just before the 18:00 news is usually busy without a last-moment change (pre-prepared stuff versus coming up with something right then-and-there), perhaps some staff were on leave ('tis the season), and who knows what else might have been going on there (it can be crazy in a control room despite viewers being none the wiser).

Pointless transition of the night - goes by so fast you need slo-mo to read it.
