Nine Network - Programs and Schedules

I actually posted about NRL game between Brisbane and Melbourne on NRL on Nine thread last week. It is the second of eight Storm matches Nine promised to show live on the main channel in Victoria this year.

Can you please link to where that statement was made by Nine?

And I take it you mean main channel, as they’d otherwise be shown live on 9Gem anyway.

Interesting move indeed. Like a blast from the past with what Ten did for AFL in Sydney and Brisbane, all local teams were on main channel, usually live.

It was mentioned in Nine’s press release on World Club Challenge earlier this year.

Nine’s Head of Rugby League, Simon Fordham, said: “We’re thrilled to be starting the year in Melbourne with the World Club Challenge in what is the first year of an exciting new broadcast deal for Nine and the NRL. It’s the first of nine Storm games that Melbourne viewers can enjoy on the main channel this season, not to mention the opening game of State of Origin, which returns to the MCG in June. "

So far Nine has shown two Storm games live on the main channel: the WCC against Leeds and last month’s match away to Cronulla.

Thank you for that, how interesting, first time I’ve seen that officially stated.

So essentially the AFL are going backwards with their broadcast approach to non-traditional markets, whereas NRL are going forward?

Knowing the performance of the AFL on main channel in Syd/Bris in broadcast deals between 2002 and 2011, I wonder if Nine just agreed to ‘lump it’ (ratings/ad sales), in order for NRL to showcase Storm more and increase they’re exposure?

Like I said, the scheduling is intriguing for this day and age, good and bad, for both the NRL and Nine.

Not really - the AFL still lets non-Victorians watch every single game involving their local teams on FTA (either live or six times a year in SA & WA, delayed). The NRL still doesn’t have a similiar scheme in place for Melbourne viewers and Storm games

Nine will show The Queen’s Birthday Party concert special on Anzac Day (April 25) at 9pm according to a promo aired tonight. The concert was held at Royal Albert Hall in London overnight to celebrate the Queen’s 92nd birthday, with performers including Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes. It was produced for the BBC.
EDIT: here is a review of the concert from The Daily Telegraph UK

I don’t understand why they won’t run new Big Bang Theory? Is it better to stockpile?

Last year, Nine held off showing the last few eps of Season 10 until September/October (those were aired in the US in April/May), which was around the time the Season 10 DVD/BluRay was being released here. However, this meant that the last few eps were legally available on DVD/BluRay first before it aired on Nine! :open_mouth:

It’s silly. Same with Ten sitting on Roseanne. I’ve watched episodes on YouTube without ads. Why would I watch weeks after they’ve aired on traditional tv?

ESCAPE TO EGYPT AND JORDAN WITH GETAWAY

From Saturday 28 April at 5.30pm

Getaway, Australia’s longest-running travel and lifestyle program, explores the mystery and wonder of Egypt and Jordan over three must-see episodes starting Saturday, April 28, at 5.30pm on Nine and 9Now.

Join Catriona Rowntree as she uncovers breathtaking locations across Egypt and Jordan, meeting extraordinary locals, eating delicious food, bargaining at markets and exploring some of the world’s most ancient and famous landmarks.

Take a step back in time and travel through history as Catriona visits the bustling Egyptian capital of Cairo, the ancient city of Luxor, mind-boggling Abu Simbel and the stunning monuments and natural wonders of Jordan. Plus, one lucky viewer will win their own adventure through Egypt.

Getaway last travelled through Egypt in 2008, and 10 years on it is still a bucket list destination for all. Over the three episodes, we explore some of the best sites Egypt and Jordan has to offer, including the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, as well as the Sphinx, Cairo’s Citadel, home to some of Egypt’s most treasured and famous structures, and an incredible cruise along the River Nile. Then there’s the Valley of the Kings plus Jordan’s extraordinary Petra, the Dead Sea and the Red Sea. We check into some of Egypt and Jordan’s most luxurious resorts and hotels along the way.

Catriona, who first went to Egypt at the age of 15, says Egypt is incomparable amongst the 100-odd countries she has visited.

“From my first trip to Egypt as an inquisitive ancient history student to my third trip as an obsessed travel reporter, I can’t get enough of this mystical country,” she said. “This trip to Egypt and Jordan was simply incredible. I’ve never had a trip where so many Aussie travellers approached me, some with tears in their eyes, to say we must tell other people to come here, that Egypt is beyond belief, and we have to share how beautiful it really is.

“It is a highly sophisticated culture that reigned thousands of years ago, obsessed with everything from aromatherapy to horoscopes, religion to royal families. It’s pretty obvious why the world is still intoxicated by Egypt.”

Getaway joined Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours 20 Day Essence of Egypt and Jordan Adventure.

This aired in Britain in November last year under the title Sam Smith at the BBC. The songlist included several tracks which had never been performed on TV before.
Why does Nine keep getting the BBC music specials?

Do you mean as opposed to the ABC? I suspect Nine would chase them as they are easy to commercialise. Go to the record company and tell them you’re screening the special, they’ll whack a few ads for his album during the show or for concerts etc.

STAN WALKER: TO HELL AND BACK

Monday 7 May at 9.15pm

image

A powerful documentary that chronicles singer Stan Walker’s battle with cancer will go to air Monday, May 7, at 9.15pm on Nine and 9Now.

Stan Walker: To Hell and Back charts the five-time ARIA-nominated performer’s journey to recovery after a devastating cancer diagnosis in 2017.

Facing an unknown and potentially terrifying outcome, Stan made the decision to document each step of his treatment.

The heart-rending footage is raw and intimate, yet ultimately uplifting. It is a portrait of Stan’s strength while facing a life-threatening illness.

The tender documentary also traces the remarkable history and unique bonds that unite his family while reflecting the honesty and sincerity that Stan shares with his fans.

Stan Walker said: “I wanted to make the documentary to help people and also to help myself process this whole thing. It was my idea. I like to use the best and worst parts of my life and to turn them into something creative.”

The broadcast of Stan Walker: To Hell and Back coincides with the release of a new six-track, self-titled EP as Stan celebrates the opportunity to let his voice rise once more. The first song off the EP, Thank You, is a heartfelt tribute written for his mother and is out now. Watch the official music video: smarturl.it Link redirect

So Nine have obviously decided The Voice lead-in so no longer of any value at all as they’re willing to put specials behind it and opt not to launch any new series?

Nine have made a late change to tonight, “Pitch Perfect 2” will now air between 7pm and 9:20pm.

Enacting on disastrous ratings last Saturday for The Voice encores throughout prime-time.

Good choice from Nine. Am glad they bumped The Voice Encores to later in the night. Was lazy scheduling last Saturday night, and the ratings proved it.

Will see if Pitch Perfect 2’s inclusion rates better tonight…

It won’t win the night for Nine by itsself (multi-channels might help), due to Seven’s AFL.

But the movie should certainly rate 50-100k higher at least, in the earlier timeslot. Which should see a mid-teens main channel share at a minimum.
