Nine (NBN)

Why does NBN see the need to have a local reporter there when the network is covering it?

Is it just a complete lack of communication with Nine?

It means the opportunity cost is that NBN isn’t then covering a story elsewhere, and given the fairly small amount of local news they cover anyway, it’s not really resources they should be wasting,

NBN no longer have the little blue NBN logo below the Nine WWOS logo during NRL matches.

They now have the same white LIVE text that Nine uses in that same spot.

Well technically the Central Coast (which is where the PM was today) is NBN’s broadcast area so why did Nine feel the need to send a reporter up from Sydney to cover the story. If anyone should piss off and be chasing other stories in their own licence area it’s the TCN-9 reporter. What seriously angers me is when Nine always feel the need to send a reporter anywhere north of Sydney and stand in front of a camera for a story when they have NBN reporters that are already based in Newcastle and across Northern NSW. Now that’s a misuse of resources on Nine’s part.

TCN’s licence area includes the Central Coast though:

So it is. I guess I’m trying to make a point in the more general sense when they start sending reporters up to Newcastle and beyond (further into the Northern NSW region).

It happens in Newcastle. When there is a major event TCN sends their reporters here. TCN reports the story from the perspective of a Sydney/National/Sky audience. Wheras NBN reporters report from a local perspective, with more detail such as street names and sububs, not just “1 hour North of Sydney”.

The way NBN reports stories isn’t suitable (or liked) by TCN. And the way TCN reports local stories is too generalised for our market and is missing (local) information.

Also:

TCN recently installed outside broadcast receivers at Mt Sugarloaf to cover stories up this way.

Whereas NBN seems to still use their cellular unit. I wonder if NBN will end up getting one of those ENG trucks to make use of the Mt Sugarloaf receivers?

I mean, NBN is a local station covering their local area from a local perspective.

When “TCN” sends a reporter - it’s really a national / network perspective.

a year from now when NBN is operating more like an O&O and there is better synergy between it and the network, maybe only one reporter goes and they file for both a local story and a national story.

But for now - it’s understandable why this happens.

When there is a big story in LA. NBC4 LA will send a crew and so will NBC network. And NBC owns NBC4 LA.

There will be better co-ordination in the future I’m sure when NBN starts to operate more like QTQ or a network station and less like an affil

At least the size of that microphone triangle will accommodate the new 9NBN logo even if they choose not to use common sense.

Thats actually incorrect. An organisation can own licences at a site or in an area but not have any equipment installed. There is no equipment up there.

Not much to see here, Seven, Ten and ABC have similar allocations

Were 9NBN using those sneak peaks before the changeover?

Yes.

yes, but they really shouldn’t be in their system now.

Makes sense that any promos produced before the change will just run their course.

rubbish… if we did that in radio, and had out of date sweepers or IDs running, the people in traffic would be reprimanded and even suspended.

NBN have never been renowned for consistency.
