Erin Molan says staff at Nine made her 12 years there ‘miserable’

Erin Molan has hit out at Nine Entertainment for its toxic culture and its employees “stealing” what should have been an enjoyable time in her career.

Molan, who worked at the beleaguered network for 12 years from her mid-twenties, this week told Saturday Confidential that while she was happy to see the Network seemed to be addressing its toxic workplace culture, that didn’t change the fact that her time there made her miserable.

“Channel 9 was such a big part of my life and should have been the most amazing experience given the opportunities I was afforded and the things I achieved,” Molan said.

“I’m still very sad that much of that joy was stolen from me by others.”

There’s a new ad for Nine Ad Manager airing in WIN regions, and it features a logo reminiscent of the one used for Nine | NBN. Interestingly, the WIN logo shown in the ad appears in the style of the pre-2006 “dotty” design, rather than the more recent WIN Network variant.

Nine Entertainment shares action plan to address culture review

Nine Entertainment (Nine) has today shared an Action Plan to accelerate, address and measure its cultural transformation, following a review into its culture by independent workplace firm, Intersection.

The Action Plan, which has been endorsed by Nine’s Board, is designed to deliver lasting change and outlines how the 22 recommendations will be sequenced, measured, and embedded across the organisation. It focuses Nine’s efforts into four priority areas: People and Culture; Leadership; Policy, Procedures and Governance; and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Since releasing the Intersection Report in full in October, more than 60 per cent of the recommendations are complete or underway. Two additional commitments have also been identified and invested in to address and uplift Nine’s culture. This includes transitioning to a new, holistic Employee Wellbeing Provider and delivering a new leadership development program including 1:1 coaching to 200 of Nine’s leaders.

Today, Nine has announced it will conduct a cultural pulse check in two years, a year ahead of the recommended time frame. This will allow Nine to gain an understanding of its impact and progress, and refine the Action Plan if required. A more indepth review will be conducted in three years, in line with the recommendations.

To ensure Nine’s cultural transformation is led from the top, its senior leaders will have their remuneration and incentives connected to cultural-specific measurements and outcomes.

Nine Entertainment Acting CEO Matt Stanton said: “Nine’s Action Plan forms an important part of Nine2028, which is the acceleration of our strategy and encompasses our business and culture transformation. Spearheaded by the Board and management team, everyone at Nine is united by the need for change. The progress made over the past six weeks is reflective of our collective desire to move quickly and build a Nine we can all be proud of.

“Since the release of the Intersection Report, Nine has taken decisive action which will positively contribute to our cultural uplift. We’ve also spent a lot of time connecting and communicating with our people, reflecting on how we can learn from this difficult yet necessary process and make lasting change.

“While our commitments to embedding our Action Plan remain unwavering, our cultural transformation ambitions are broader than the 22 recommendations alone, and indeed broader than Nine itself. Of course, our unrelenting focus remains on addressing Nine’s cultural issues, however there is no denying the prevalence of poor behaviour in the media industry is unacceptable and change is required.

“As the largest employer in the industry we believe we can play an active role in shaping the cultural change required to create a safe, respectful and thriving industry. At the appropriate time, we look forward to engaging with our industry peers to address these issues,” Mr Stanton said.

Nine management will regularly report to the Board on the progress and outcomes of its Action Plan.

‘Defend, deflect, and diffuse’: Why Nine’s culture Action Plan ‘raises several red flags’

On Friday afternoon, Nine Entertainment shared its Action Plan to accelerate, address, and measure its cultural transformation following a damning independent review by Intersection. While the media giant has said that 60% of the plan is either underway or complete, leading PR experts say the update is full of red flags.

Is it Grimshaw & Karl and Ally??.
Sarah Abo and Liam Barrett too.
The location also.

On a seperate note, reading that it says Willoughby, seeing that 9 News graphic and that its Karl and Ally for Today, I would be guessing that that was originially written in early to mid 2020.

Directing people to contact their local Southern Cross Austereo office hasn’t been updated for the new affiliate agreement either.

A few interesting points from the article, some of which I believe were already known.

Nine has assessed several proposals to create more value for its shareholders, and some investors believe it could break up the various businesses in its portfolio, including selling all or part of Stan.

Any major changes to Nine’s portfolio would need the support of Birketu, the private investment vehicle of billionaire WIN Corporation businessman Bruce Gordon and the company’s largest shareholder. Including a 10.15 per cent share held via Macquarie as a cash-settled equity swap, Birketu has a 25 per cent financial interest in Nine.

Mr Wylie has held informal discussions with Nine and Birketu about the company’s strategy, according to people briefed on those talks. Those close to Nine do not believe Mr Wylie is considering an activist campaign against the company given that he has a long connection to Mr Stanton.

Nine announces operating model reset

Nine Entertainment Co. (Nine) is accelerating the Group’s strategic transformation, with an operating model reset and new Executive Team.

Nine’s refreshed operating model will more effectively leverage the Group’s portfolio of premium media assets, simplify business operations, reduce duplication, and provide greater accountability.

As part of Nine’s strategic transformation program, the business will be streamlined into three consumer-focused divisions:

  • Streaming & Broadcast;
  • Publishing; and
  • Marketplaces

The updated operating model will help deliver the Group’s Integrated Audience Platform strategy, while strengthening Nine’s operational and financial performance. It will underpin Nine’s plan to reduce its cost base by a further $50 million in FY25 and enhance profitability through greater utilisation of the business’s premium assets.

The three divisions will be supported by Group functions working across the business, reducing duplication and introducing consistent, company-wide processes, which are critical for Nine’s ongoing cultural transformation.

Nine has appointed experienced industry executive Amanda Laing as Managing Director of the Streaming & Broadcast division, which brings together Stan, 9Now, Broadcast Television, and Radio.

Ms Laing brings with her a strong background in television, streaming, digital, print and video-on-demand as well as expertise in commercial strategies and partnerships, business transformation, sports and entertainment content and rights, and mergers and acquisitions. Most recently, Ms Laing was Chief Commercial and Content Officer at Foxtel Group and Managing Director at Binge.

The current Publishing division, led by Managing Director Tory Maguire, will be expanded to include nine.com.au alongside Nine’s publishing assets, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and The Australian Financial Review.

The creation of a Marketplaces division provides more targeted oversight of Domain and Drive and ensures Nine is capitalising on value creation opportunities from Streaming & Broadcast and Publishing and across the Group. Alex Parsons will oversee Marketplaces in addition to his Chief Digital Officer role. There is no change to the current business structure or governance of Domain, an ASX-listed business.

Nine has also appointed James Boyce as Director of Regulatory, Public Affairs and Communications to enhance the Group’s focus on the regulatory environment. Mr Boyce is an experienced regulatory, government and communications leader, with a deep understanding of industry policy, national affairs and the media landscape. He joins Nine from Paramount (Australia and New Zealand), where he was head of government and regulatory affairs.

In line with the new operating model, Nine will transition to a more streamlined eight-member Executive Team reporting to Acting Chief Executive Officer Matt Stanton.

Nine Acting Chief Executive Officer Matt Stanton said: “Our operating model reset will help accelerate the strategic transformation underway at Nine by improving how the different parts of the business work together. Our new approach will better position the business to manage the challenging external environment and ensure the company is future-fit to sustainably deliver for our consumers, partners, shareholders and people.

“Aligned with the greater accountability that flows from resetting the operating model, I’m pleased to unveil a new and focused Executive Team to lead Nine through its next phase of growth. The appointment of Amanda, one of the top media executives in the country, will add extraordinary industry expertise and energy to Nine’s experienced Executive Team in 2025 while James will sharpen the Group’s focus on the evolving regulatory landscape.”
